Not quite true VJ.

A pair of fatasses isnt usualy a staple in a 4-3 defense. The "fatass" or very big nose gaurd (raji like) is a better fit in the 3-4 defense because there, a 0 or 1 tech is used. In this case you need a plug to avoid movement into the LBs up front and to eat up combo blocks and to the ILBs. Melton is the perfect size to play a 3 in our system. At the 3 tech you need to have explosivness to disrupt gaurd movement and have the giddy up to fight off being "reached or sealed" by backside OL in run plays. A plug isnt as effective in our defense because we are asking our 2's and 3's to be disruptive in the backfield, not protect the ILBs as you see in the 3-4. Melton is a good player for us, but if we must move on in order to nail down a LT then that is what will have to happen.

Now with that being said there are very large freaks such as the "williams wall" that are athletic enough to make the plays you ask need them to make. But it is certianly not a requirement for the 4-3 like it is to have a plug in the 3-4 at your 0 or 1 tech.

Trestman hasn't ruled out the chance that we may go with a 3-4. If we do, we let Melton walk and use this Cap Space different IMO

Without a doubt but I think well stay with what has been working

We have too much 4-3 talent to make a switch without a lot of growing pains. That's why I've never been worried about a switch to the 3-4 with a new coach. Who would give up a top 5 defense just to switch to something that might not be as effective and will take years to fully implement?

I would hate to let go of young talent like that but maybe franchise him and see if two scenarios can work out

1. He becomes a standout de in a 3-4 then we can sign him long term

or

2. We try to trade him


dont think he can't convert to a de people thought the same of Dorsey in kc and he hasn't dissapointed

Well if we're assuming he will play a 4/5 tech then maybe he can, they are more like our 3s in a 4-3 system

in the end it comes down to the Cap Space ;)

2013 Draft

Draft
1. John Cooper, OG UNC
We adress our LG void here with the best on the board. Cooper is a well rounded player who can play at a higher level at LG than we have seen in years. This addition is an instant upgrade to the merry go round weve had the last few years. This pick should allow immeadiate better protection and ability to run inside, also will elevate Webb's play.

2. Travis Frederick, OC Wis.
Filling the pending hole at C I think we double dip in the 2nd as well. Garza is not getting any younger and there is no gaurentee that he will survive the year as a starter. Worst case scenario Frederick provides depth for the entire interior, as we have no servicable backup either. Best case, Frederick could earn the starting C job. Either way this is a better value pick than the popular MLB mock here. Rounds one and two are the first time in a decade that the Bears make serious attempts to upgrade our line. This pick is also cohericed by the lack of C FAs and a pressing need.

4. Kiko Alonso, ILB Oregon
We have a need to adress at MLB with the age and health of BU. This pick I feel is a great value pick, comming from a big program this is a guy we can develop for the future. He can play both the MLB and SLB so worst case scenario if he dosent pan out to be the next Bears MLB then we have a guy who can compete with Roach for the spot. Very athletic, good value pick.

5. EJ Manuel, FSU
I dont buy that he will last this long but if he does this is an amazing pick in terms of value. Most mocks have him still available, I doubt it but if he is then we have a steal. See first post for more details.

6. Arby Jones, DT UGA
Another plug down in the middle, can possibly crack some rotation...maybe in a goalline situation. We have had excellent ability to develop our defensive players so if the D coaches stay in tact the ceiling is high for this raw prospect. Provides more youth and another body to pulg in at our 2 or 3 tech should something happen to onne of our regulars. Again, you cant argue with someone who landed a starting spot on a national title contending team, and you know in the SEC you play future NFL talents almost every week.

7. B.W. Webb, CB William and Mary
Fast player who will look to earn a roster spot in ST. Possibly a gunner or return man with the departure of Devin Hester. This late in the draft your just hoping for a guy that can stay around. I like the small college idea for this late pick just because I'm sure hes underscouted and maybe we have a ST guy here. Nothing really more to add into this, likely swap this out for BPA

1. John Cooper, OG UNC


I'm going to say that Cooper falls to us at 20 and we do not look back or think twice. With this pick Emery "dunks the ball" so to speak on the OL and gets a rock solid player. Enormous potential at OG or OC we have a great player who looks to be a rock for upwards of a decade. This possibly allows for Garza to be a late cut. If it works this way, best value pick in the draft IMO.

TRADE: Bears send pick 50 (400 pts) to Niners for picks 61,93, (420 pts)

2. Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB UCONN
We find our nickleback at pick 61, and likely CB of the future. Lots of experts are calling this guy one of the potential steal of the draft. Good size at 6'1 199lbs and still holds solid 4.5 speed he can come play nickle for us day one, and likely slides over to play CB opposite of whoever is left between Tillman and Jennings next year. If this guy was at a big program he could very well be a first rounder, as many analysits seem to think he has enormous potential.

3. Brian Schwenke, OC Cal.
I love this guy and I think we nab him up in the third. A player who fully reminds me of Kreutz we bolster our OL and give us options at the C position between him and Cooper. Explosive player who has the athleticism and quick hips to get down field and nail combo blocks it will help Forte in the run game. Able to anchor against bull rushes and great lower body mirror in pass pro we have our self likely a starter at C. As said earlier this may give us an option to cut Garza. Unfortunately his time looks to be up after all the years he has served us.

5. Landry Jones, QB OU

I dont think we are going into next year with McCown and Blanchard as the backups. We add this guy into the mix who had much success in a big time program. I think Trestman wants "his guy" to develop and i suspect that if Jones is still on the board we snatch him up here. Good value and lets Testman have a guy who is his from the start to mold the way he wants. If Jay tanks this year expect Jones to back up a first round pick next year if the Bears look to move on. If Jay has success like I suspect he will, we have a guy to watch and learn for a good amount of time and maybe take over down the road.
