Chicago Bears Hire Marc Trestman as the new HC

Mada7, I don't know if you have seen these, (did a quick search on you tube)

but his highlight reels from the past 2 seasons should help you get a better idea of the kind of runner Forte is.

I would also add that Forte has been a true "3 down" RB for the bears as well.

The others chipped with some answers mada but I'll just add that Forte is a one cut/cut back style runner with a long stride and the need for some room in the open field to do his thing. He can make people miss and he has some power once he gets going but he's a terrible short yardage back because he runs too upright. Michael Bush is the guy who's here to take those carries but Bush is a lot better back than just that and I hope Trestman makes better use of both of them than Tice did.

A couple of other thing I think you'll appreciate: he doesn't panic and throw the game plan out the window when the team is behind in the second half, plus his play calling is seldom suspect. There are other coaches in the CFL that have had me screaming at the TV thanks to a brain dead play call, but I never had that feeling with Trestman. Even when the Als lost, you wouldn't see many of his fingerprints on it.

One thing his teams did have an issue with though - penalties. They were always among the leaders in penalties and many were of the unnecessary roughing variety. His teams played very hard and crossed the line quite often. The Als have/had a few real hard-assed types and he didn't seem to do much to rein them in, beyond the occasional chewing out.

I assume he had a hand in bringing in his players? Also that he had a preference for the "real hard-assed types"? I know that in itself will make him a hero here. Chicago loves a tough football player, but a player that generates too many penalties will not be looked upon too fondly.

He may have had a hand in bringing Emry along, a couple of the others I'm thinking about joined the Als before 2008. Rather it's that he doesn't seem to sit them when they get carried away. Emry was fined by the league three times last season. The last time was for a deliberate, blatant nut shot which got him tossed from the game. I'm sure Trestman didn't like Emry's behaviour, but he trotted Emry right back out there the next game. There may have been sanctions we didn't know about, but the bottom line was that Emry kept up the late hits and the cheap shots all season.

I don't believe for one second that he endorses really late hits on quarterbacks, cheap shots, etc. He will get after a player for a dumb penalty or a cheap shot, rather that he doesn't seem to change their behaviour long term. It seems like such a contradiction that his teams were so well prepared, but couldn't avoid the penalty problem.

I should be clear that I'm talking about the roughing penalties. Overall, the team was decent when it comes to things like offsides.

I see. Well, I hope he reins in that kind of stuff here.
We don't play that way, but they have some of the very same problems in Detroit with a few of their players. The HC does nothing and sometimes even defends them.

Trestman would never defend such actions.

In fairness to him, he may have been hamstrung with Emry as this guy is what they call in the CFL "a ratio buster" - a very valuable commodity (won't bore you with the details), plus he's a crucial part of the D. In retrospect, Trestman probably couldn't afford to sit him. Unfortunately he couldn't rein him in either.

There were a few other guys on the Als who seemed to take one too many ill-timed, selfish penalties and the TV commentators would occasionally mention that it was such a contradiction on an otherwise well coached team. It will be interesting to see if this problem follows him, or was it just something about those players.

Could very well just be a few players that were out of control

We had a center that would always take stupid drive killing 15 yarders, regardless of coaches

Then there was the time he cracked a teammate over the head with a 25 LB weight...

Forte is a workhorse-type of back. He is "good" at all 3 things a RB should be: Running, Receiving, Blocking, but he isnt "great" at any of them. From what ive heard of Trestman, he likes to use his backs to both block and receive, if thats true, he should love Forte...before we got Brandon Marshall, Forte (OUR RB mind you), was our leading receiver. Plus, he is good at blocking.

Forte is a one cut back...he can make one good cut, and if the blocking is good, he can turn it into huge 20-30 yard gains. But he isnt a speed demon like Peterson, ive seen Forte break huge runs, only to get chased down and tackled by a safety.

AGREE, JC needed to do better , at the times he had protection. But, I think as a whole game, JC didn't/ couldn't believe he had time. IF he is give protection ( not MAX) and still fails, its time to cut the cord. I just BELIEVE if give protection most of the time, and had faith, he would be a much better QB. Lets all hope thats the case, Protection improved and JC's play.
