Man, how exciting is it, that we FINALLY have a head coach who not only understands how to build and run a championship offense - but can actually call plays?
Belicheck said it best back in August, in an interview. Regarding his coordinators he said those were just titles. He reserved the right to call plays, and does so. Others get to call plays under his strict guidance, but he made it clear that he is the guy who guides the Patriots.
We finally have a guy like that. No more wooden indian on the sidelines who can't even figure out how to throw a challenge flag. We now have a brilliant, and proven, offensive mind on the sidelines.
I've got to pinch myself to make sure I'm not just dreaming all of this and Lovie is still here after all...

Yes, even with Drew Brees. Think for a second, they had Joe Vitt running the whole things as Interim HC up until the first game, then, with less than a week, the Oline coach is suddenly running the whole show....offense, defense, etc. Now if I were that Oline coach, and had only a week to be "the leader", I would be spending time scrambling to know what is happening in all phases, while also being the OC (suddenly) and HC (suddenly).
Further, don't for one second discount that not only was there a last second coaching shuffle, but also key defensive players missing the game. That could effect field position and how many points a team would need to score to win.
Nope, not concerned. And even if I were, what good does it do to be concerned at this point? I'll wait until something bad happens to begin my second guessing of Emery and Trestman. But that's just me.....

Agreed. I think Kromer did as well as he could under the circumstances plus remember the Saints defense stinks.

Correct. Everyone said he called his own plays in Montreal as HC, and people would be surprised if he lets someone else call plays for him in Chi. This seems to be more of an OL and "assistant" OC move.

Would this grease the skids as to get Bushrod here?

I like it, I like it all. Trestman sounds really good to me, and I am impressed that he already has part of his staff in line. I like the Kromer hire as well as the DeCamillas tab. This is a good day my friends, this is a good day! Now if Trestman can convince Marinelli to stay, I will be doing backflips, and if you guys could see my fat old ass, you would understand how much that means. Well...my ass isn't THAT fat.
Just for the record, we have a really difficult schedule next year, so I don't think any knowledgable football fan expects an immediate turn-around, but I look at what I've seen today and I see a swing for the fences. In my opinion, this day will be the day we will look back on as a huge failure, or the beginning of new competitive era of Chicago football with Phil Emery being canonized in Chicago. It will be an extreme one way or the other, but it will not be the average milk toast we have seen here for years. Just my opinion.
It takes balls to swing for the fences like Emery has done here, and my motto below should be something Trestman considers for all those that passed him up in the NFL and sent him to Canada in the first place.

I think Trestman has a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. I don't believe we'll see any laissez-faire or glad handing with this guy. Emery beat the Jan 18 self imposed deadline now I'm really psyched to see how the draft and FA shakes out.

I don't know why that keeps getting said. It's not really any more difficult that this year's schedule was. We played one weak division (AFCS) that had only one quality team in Houston. But we also played a very dangerous NFCW division too which has 2 damn good teams in SF and Seattle and another that is improving and no pushover (St. Louis). Next year we play two average quality divisions, the NFCE & the AFCN. The best team among these 8 is clearly Baltimore who will be missing Ray Lewis by then (and maybe Ed Reed too).
The immediate goal to set is to win your division. Do that and you can be no lower than a 4th seed and youre guranteed to host a minimum of one home playoff game. I know it happens, but its tough to go deep as a wildcard having to win three straight on the road. Just WIN YOUR DIVISION. Something we had right there for the taking this year at 7-1.
14 of the 16 game regular season is composed of identical opponents as your divisional rivals face. Only 2 games differ. These are...
Green Bay: San Fran & Atlanta
Minnesota: Seattle & Tampa Bay
Chicago: St. Louis & New Orleans
...I say advantage Bears there. One of the benefits of finishing 3rd in your division.
This team, front office, and coaching staff better damn well be thinking about "immediate turnaround". Otherwise you may as well start dismantling the defense and trading away vets for picks to rebuild with. No need for that. I think Emery recognizes what I'm getting at here...preserve the D largely intact, bolster the O, and make a viable run. This team was a lower-middle level offense away from winning 12+ games and the division just this year. Yeah, I do expect results sooner rather than later and I like the bold "go for it" strategy.

Well, I'm sure as hell not advocating that they rest on their laurels either, and I truly doubt they (Emery/Trestman) look at it that way, but there IS a little thing called a SALARY CAP that can really effect how QUICKLY a turnaround can feasibly be made. I'm not saying it isn't possible and I'm not saying some creative financing cannot be found by Cliff Stein, but I'm not going to be screaming for heads if after the first season we finish 8-8. Now, if we do the same in 2014, then I'll start getting crabby, but Lovie Smith was given 9 freakin years to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Halas Hall and he was given most of the last 5 years with a plethora of mediocrity and a team of apologists through the media and fans proclaiming those of us that saw through his charade as a bunch of meatballs. Depending on how the next year or two go, if I'm seeing a real competitor being built, and not an embarrassment of "average", then I will be patient. There ARE some defensive vets that may not see the fruits of their immediate labor.
Now, IF Emery/Trestman bring home the trophy next year, then great, and that SHOULD be their goal, but for fans to realistically "expect it" in the first year of a total change is a bit naive. I'm all for it if they can do it, and if they can, the applause should be resounding.
