I was thinking the same thing. A guy that really can take charge of the D nd run with it like a HC. Hopefully someone with a real aggressive, attacking D

In Toubs case I think it was a combination of loyalty to Lovie and his loyalty to Andy Reid outweighing his loyalty to the Bear organization. But in Marinelli's case I think it's totally about his loyalty to Lovie and I think it's a bad move on his part because his players obviously wanted him to stay and Trestman wanted him to stay. Nothing else really makes any sense because he was popular, well liked, and effective.

So this one pisses me off. I wish Toub good luck in KC but as far as Marinelli is concerned I won't. He's deserting a team that helped him boost his career again after his debacle in Detroit and his players and I believe it's all because he's miffed about Lovie being canned. So all I'll say is sayonara Rod.
Totally agree, Soul. I can understand Toub leaving since he was interviewed for the HC job and likely felt like staying afterward was a dead end for his career and he would be awkwardly serving under the guy who beat him out for the position. We also interviewed a number of STCs clearly knowing he might need to be replaced so it was anticipated.

Rod on the other hand was kind of an asshole about it IMHO. The only defensive guy emery interviewed was Singletary who was definitely not a serious HC candidate by anyone's imagination. That was a McC courtesy call only and everyone knew it. Marinelli's job was not in jeopardy and in fact he was respected and valued enough that many players, fans, and press were rooting for him to stay. Emery went out of his way to suggest that the D wasn't the issue he was looking to fix. By all reports, Emery and Trest wanted him to stay and offered him that chance. And it is not like Rod had any plausible HC prospects ahead of him in the foreseeable future to think about either.

So basically Marinelli left in a snit out of some misplaced Lovie-loyalty not because he was pushed out or had better future opportunities elsewhere. Screw him then. Having someone on your staff who's heart isn't in it or who doesn't really want to be there is just as bad as having someone who's not fit for the job in the first place. It's no loss over what "would have been" had he stayed if he really didn't want to be here anyway.

Dumb "stupid pride" move by Rod there. And yeah not very loyal to the organization who extended his contract and have him a chance after he was radioactive post an 0-16 season.

Here is a possibility. Since everyone is getting their panties in a wad, this guy might want to leave. But I honestly don't know how good he is.

I'm also wondering, are there any DC on the four final teams that have their contract end this year? Although why would anyone leave a team that just went deep into the playoffs for the Bears that is going through a big change.

Ray Horton angry after Cardinals hire Bruce Arians

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 17, 2013, 9:53 PM EST
    AP
The Cardinals have hired Bruce Arians as their new head coach, and the in-house candidate who was passed over for Arians isn’t happy about it.
Ray Horton, the Cardinals defensive coordinator who did an excellent job in 2012 while the Cardinals’ offense fell apart, was considered a strong candidate to replace the fired Ken Whisenhunt as the next head coach. Instead, the Cardinals have announced that Arians, who spent last season as the Colts’ offensive coordinator and interim head coach, will get the job. Multiple reports say Horton was angry at that announcement.
Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 reports that Horton had a heated exchange with new Cardinals General Manager Steve Keim when he found out that Arians got the job. Mike Garafolo of USA Today reports that Horton is “pissed.”
It’s hard to blame Horton for feeling that way. He’s a well regarded defensive coordinator who paid his dues as an assistant and before that as an NFL player for 10 years. In any line of work, to be passed over for a promotion you think you have coming stings.
Horton still has a year on his contract with the Cardinals, but Arians isn’t believed to want him to stay, and it sure doesn’t sound like Horton wants to stay. So Horton will presumably start looking for another job as an assistant, somewhere, after thinking he had a good chance of staying in Arizona and becoming the Cardinals’ next head coach.

Report: Horton out, Bowles in as Cardinals defensive coordinator

Posted by Mike Florio on January 17, 2013, 10:10 PM EST

For most of the last two weeks, it appeared that the Cardinals were attempting to implement a cake-and-eat-it approach to Ray Horton, keeping the head-coaching candidate as defensive coordinator and hiring an offensive-minded head coach.
Though the latter is what happened, Horton apparently won’t be staying.
Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports reports that Horton is out as the Arizona defensive coordinator. Per Silver, he’ll be replaced by former Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles on Bruce Arians’ staff.
Bowles was elevated to the position in Philly after Juan Castillo was fired. The Eagles went 1-9 with Bowles in the job, with the Eagles giving up on average 31.9 points per game.
In contrast, the Cardinals’ defense was the only bright spot for the team last year. And if Horton is available, he’ll surely land on his feet elsewhere — perhaps even sooner than Rob Ryan, who said last week he’d have a new job in five minutes.

Well hopefully we're making a contact with him because AZ intercepted as many or more passes than we did so the guy may look to play a similar style of defense. We can't overlook Hoke though if he's willing to stick around.

Horton's D was the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal organization down here the last few years. He's been a rising star and had has been mentioned as a future HC possibility here as well. I understand the Cards going with Arians (O, OL, and QB are far bigger problems here then D, even more so than in Chicago if you can believe it) so Horton's sudden departure is worth looking at at. Him and Hoke are two worthy candidates for the DC position IMHO.

I'm always a bit amazed that such a leader of men, a guy that studies film strategy and tactics can be just as prone to drama and leaving in a huff as anyone else. There's always the human element sure but I'd like to believe coaches can rise above their ego's for the greater good.

I sure hope the next DC does.

Well both have to be well aware of just how much a good pass rush helps coverage and both seem to favor a defensive style that encourages playing for turnovers and that's an element of our defense we'll want to keep.

With Marinelli leaving I believe it becomes even more important to keep guy like Urlacher and Izzy around. They may not be what they once were but they're leaders and play makers and that's a key in that defense.
