7 of them gone
Trestman needs to fill several openings after seven assistants from Lovie Smith's staff were informed Thursday that they would not be retained: Bob Babich (linebackers), Jeremy Bates (quarterbacks), Mike DeBord (tight ends), Darryl Drake (receivers), Tim Holt (offensive line), Tim Spencer (running backs) and Mike Tice (offensive coordinator

Would've been better to keep Bates imo.

If I understand it right, we need a QB coach and DC

I'm thinking that mentally this is also a good thing. Jays security blanket is gone. This is going to be done Trestmans way and Jay now understands that. Trestman is every bit as good as Bates was, so I don't have issue with it. If we were taking a step down I wouldn't be as happy. Of course there will be a new QB coach, but not sure how much Trestman will do. He sounds like he was going to be very hands on with Jay.

Trestman has made it clear he will be in charge of the offense and that is centered upon Cutler. He'll be in the QB room, etc., as he stated in his presser. Trestman needs an OC and QB coach he can work THROUGH pretty easily, with no push back. Evidently, he didn't believe that could work with Bates.

Not too surprised with all these moves. To date it looks like Trestman looks to keep the current strength and conditioning dept in tact with Arthur and Jones.

Exactly.
Also, after it was announced that Matt Cavanaugh was the new QB coach, Brad Biggs tweeted "Make no mistake, Trestman is Cutler's QB coach."
We didn't need, or want, Bates in the mix. Cutler HAS to change some things. I totally agree that Trestman shouldn't let Jay keep the security blanket. There's a new sheriff in town, and Jay's gotta (finally) learn to improve. Cutler will no longer have ANY excuses. He'll have a good oline, decent receivers, probably a solid receiving TE & arguably the best QB coach (Trestman). If he doesn't improve with Trestman helping him, then we need to look for a new QB in 2014.

Yep you guys have nailed it. Jay Cutler and his future as the Bears QB belongs to Trestman now. Emery knows he has to extend him so it's time to get him up to the level he's capable of playing at and taking that one which is just one of the reasons he was hired to begin with. Bates became redundant under this scheme plus he may well be looking for another OC job which he obviously wasn't getting here.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Bears are very interested in Jacksonville's Mel Tucker for DC job.
