If Today's Offense-Friendly Rules Existed in the 80's...
...which good-to-on the cusp teams would've benefitted the most during that decade?
I'd say Fouts and the Chargers, the Dolphins, Broncos, also maybe a couple of the Neil Lomax Cardinal teams.
Are there any teams you think would have benefitted the most from having today's rules then?
Also, how do you believe it would have affected the Bears?
I'm BACK, Jack... or something..

The Entire AFC East, save the Colts, would have all gotten better. Each team had a really good qb but not always a great running game to help out(Bills did). I think the Bears would've had to switch up defensive gameplans, for sure. Team probably would have won 1 sb, i would think

Sweetness puts the rushing title out of reach - players would be bankrupt for their helmet to helmet attempted tackles of him.
Charles Martin suspended for the remainder of the 1986 campaign, and probably a good portion of 1987 - flagrant after action body slam of Madd Mac.

Oh man go back and watch any 85 Bears game and what they did to QBs. Can you imagine them having today's rules back then? Half the defense would be broke and/or in jail after week 3.

Dan Marino would own EVERY passing record. The Jets and Dolphins would've likely made the SB a time or two each. Think the 49ers would've had the best offense, but seeing how the Bears had the best defense back then, I don't think the Bears develop the 46, but adapt to the rules, scheme wise, which would be the tie breaker with the 49ers, and subsequently gives them some leverage against them in the playoffs. I'd say 49ers still have their dynasty, but Ken O'Brien, Dan Marino and Jim Kelley each would have at least a ring, themselves and the Bears dynasty likely would've stayed the same. Giants, Broncos and Redskins wouldn't have been as memorable.

Marino and Montana would be KILLING teams even worse then they did, Moon and that run and shoot teams w/the Oilers omg. SD also.
Now reverse that, what teams would take a huge step back if the 80's rules were in place today? Atl/NE/Den/Indy/Sea/NO/GB/Wash, any team that tries to pass 500+ times would have either their WR's killed, or their QB's, or both. No way WR's get away w/the stuff they pull, they'd get crushed. No Tebow's/Cam's, let alone the little guys like Wilson or RGIII...those guys wouldn't last 5 games before their heads were removed from their shoulders.

HONESTLY, the teams that would be hurt would be the ones with a decent-good offense/strong defense. This isn't popular, but I think the Bears would take a step back, along with the Seahawks, Browns, Patriots, Giants, and Saints.
I think the Redskins would benefit, thanks to their triple threat wide receiver attack. Marino would have his ring, for sure. The 49ers would be...the 49ers.
If the 80's rules existed today, say goodbye to pansy-ball.
Falcons, Saints, Packers, Cowboys...bye-bye.
And there would be none of this "athlete quarterback" junk. Those guys would die in front of thousands of people.
