Trestman's offense & Cutler
As much as I can recall about Trestman's offenses in the past, they seemed built around three keys for the quarterback,...timing, accuracy & decision-making. In his career, Cutler has struggled with all three tenants at times. Not all on him for sure, but some, no doubt. I will be very interested to see how Trestman is going to coach him up. Fixing the line and receivers will help, but to me, it starts & ends with Cutler,....

Remember, Chicago has been the place where QBs go to die. Cutler has become damaged goods here, just like most of our previous QBs. Hopefully Trestman sees that and can reverse the damage we've done. We have too many other holes to fill so we can't afford to give up on Cutler and start over with yet another QB.

I think you're 100% correct and I believe Trestman will be the one to hold him accountable for making that offense work. He said as much in his presser when he used the analogy of "handing him the keys to the car". As much as anything he wants this to be Jay Cutler's offense to run and he wants to show him how to do it well.
I believe Cutler will respond positively to this approach big time. Some dislike his attitude but I think he's just an impatient sort with a no bullshit outlook on things and he's just not very good at hiding his emotions or the truth. He says a lot of things you know he doesn't really believe in 100% but he does it because it's what's expected. But his mannerisms betray him.
I don't see Emery making a huge long term commitment to him unless he and Trestman can be certain he can lead this team to a Super Bowl win. That's the prize and now that we have a legit offensive mastermind and a proven QB guru any and all excuses have been used up. Jay's game needs to improve and improve now.
We all heard Trestman call the QB/HC relationship a marriage and just like life some are life long partnerships and some end in divorce. How well this one survives in the long term we'll know soon enough. Jay needs to lead his team and if he's not getting the job done I don't think Trestman will have a problem asking for a divorce. He doesn't appear to me to be the patient sort either.
Thanks, Soul, I appreciate the welcome. I agree with your assessment on Cutler. Coddling is not in the new organizational gameplan. I hope Cutler understands that & becomes the QB we all want him to be,....

I don't have anything to base this on, but I wonder if Trestman will quickly identify a "project" QB that he can begin working on right away (it could be a young free agent with a high ceiling if he's got a guy like Trestman working with him). Cutler can be the #1, but if he simply can't get better, then at least there is something in the works for 2014. Worst case, Trestman will simply end up with a solid backup if Cutler does get with the program and improve.
That scenario seems like a win/win proposition.

If MT really is the QB development guru he's been touted as, the Bears would be stupid not to put his talent to maximal use. Whether it is Blanchard or a new draftee/udfa, we need to get some plausible QB talent in the pipeline. It's not impossible to foresee a Cutler-less Bears in 2014. I don't want that and I don't think it will come to that, but if Jay fails to progress next year (one of the big reasons for hiring Trestman), it might be time to move on and truly rebuild top to bottom including a new QB.

I disagree and say it all starts with the OL. Have you ever seen Brady or Brees play? They have faith in their line and trust them big time. Give Culter those lines and he will be the Pro Bowl QB he already was behind a good Broncos line

If this new coaching staff truly CAN develop our own young draft talent, then it's really going to be exciting!
I've always envied the franchises that could consistently develop their draft talent, and not HAVE to go to FA to get good players. I can't remember the last time we had coaching talent on offense that could consistently do this. This would have to help our cap situation over the years too.
We may also see that Emery can judge talent well enough to bring in a few young FA's who didn't prosper on other teams, but who CAN be developed by Trestman and his staff. Maybe that's a pipe dream, but it sure would be cool. Those type of FA's are often very affordable. It's an entirely different situation than the Jerry Angelo moves to bring in guys like Orlando Pace and Moose Muhammad.
I'm just sitting back and watching what these guys actually do. I've been so bitterly disappointed in the past (failures like Tice) that I'm having a hard time blindly trusting these "gurus" anymore. But I am hopeful for good things to happen. Won't it be great if these new coaches truly CAN develop young talent consistently?

You're preaching to the choir, German. I completely agree that Jay has been let down by a miserable surrounding cast (esp OL) and that is most of the reason why he has been disappointing. I hope and expect major strides on OL and in the coaching staff this offseason to build on improvements in the WR corps from last year.
But even so, we can't give Cutler a complete pass. He does melt down in his mechanics here and there. And there were times where he had some decent protection and still was pretty bad. Lot of physical ability but he does need to play better in his own right regardless of the other issues on offense. Emery knows this and that's why he hired a HC who basically is Jay's personal position coach as well.
I have faith in this plan and the results. But Jay must SHOW IT next year too.

Whether it's Blanchard, a draftee, or a guy culled from the FA list I think we can count on Trestman having another QB coming up through the ranks behind Cutler. The need to sign a guy like Campbell was an expensive proposition and I'm sure Emery doesn't want to repeat that every year.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see what they do as far as 2013 is concerned. I can't imagine Trestman we'll feel safe with just Blanchard backing Cutler so it's hard to say what he might do just yet. I'm sure their not only looking at lineman as far as these college all star games go.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
