Predictions for 2013 under Trestman

Ok, sticking my neck out here and laying it on the chopping block, considering I'm real new here, but here goes:

Since the NFL is looking more like the CFL with every passing year (pun intended) this is what I see getting added to the Bears offence in 2013. If some of this is already old news, chalk it up to my level of ignorance about things NFL.

Read - Option: Already discussed.

More Shotgun: If they ain't biting on the play action, then why not. Gives Jay a chance to see the field and a few feet before the pass rush gets him.

Shovel Pass: Looks like a regular passing play, but the QB underhands it to the RB on the way up the middle. Works real well when the MLB drops off into coverage and the blockers turn the rush to the outside. Doesn't if the RB gets happy feet and tips the D. If the RB drops it, incomplete pass. Beats fumbling the handoff.

RB Running out of the Shotgun: Hate this play and I wish the CFL OCs would call me on this one. (They have cell phones don't they?) Works well when it catches the D off guard otherwise it's stuffed. Will probably work for half a season until the DCs around the league catch on.

Short Yardage QB: Already discussed. Under Trestman, the backup QB Adrian McPherson scored 9 rushing TDs last year in the regular season and one in the post season. Keeps the D guessing.

Roll Out: Jay has wheels, use them.

Empty Backfield: It's a passing down, everyone knows it, so make the most of it.

Slotbacks: Look for these to get snuck in there once in a while.

No TEs: See empty backfield. Receivers all over the place.

Forte as a receiver: More of the same.

I don't think those are bad predictions at all. I think we're going to see a lot of unique stuff from Tresman. The only thing I wouldn't be a fan of is the Direct RB shotgun snap. We would need to be sure our RB's could handle the snap before we present it. I wouldn't mind seeing it every now and then but not with real frequency.

I would love to see more of Forte as a receiver.

I don't know if these are "predictions" or just things I "hope" will happen with Trestman:

1. Our blockers will actually block people, protect Cutler & open nice holes for the RB's to run through (I may cry tears of joy if a Bears team actually DOES these things well).

2. Our receivers and TE's will actually be able to catch the football regularly and not have so many dropped passes (see the "tears of joy" thing above).

3. Our play calling will not be utterly predictable to anyone over the age of 3 (you guessed it, another "tears" thing here too).

4. Our coaching staff will actually be capable of making in-game adjustments when the opposing team is killing us, & our game plan is simply not working.

5. I predict that if 1 through 4 (above) actually happen, then we will return to the playoffs (at least as a wild card) in 2013.

6. One other thing.....if the blocking thing happens (for Bears fans this is the football equivalent of seeing a unicorn prancing around Soldier Field) then we will have a powerful running game to compliment a nice West Coast passing game. Frankly, I'm amazed at what Forte has been able to do without run blocking these past few years. He's gotten 90% of his yardage on his own......that's why he's getting more yards around the edges rather than being able to cut up the middle between the tackles much. Could be a monster year for Forte.

For the RB shotgun thing, the ball goes to the QB in the shotgun then he hands off. Good for catching the D when they're overly committed to defending the pass, but far from my favourite play.

But you did remind me of the Wildcat, which I had forgotten to add. Another CFL gadget play -- the direct snap to the upback in the punt formation. Good when needing a couple of yards for first down and desperate for a score. Sometimes goes for big yardage.

Good sample of the run out of the shotgun. Some OCs have the RB standing next to the QB as if he's there to block. In that case, he's standing still when he gets the ball and he usually gets stuffed. Here the RB was on the move as he started a couple of yards back.

Perfect timing for the play as both DEs take the outside route in their pass rush, leaving only the DTs and the MLB to be cleared out. The secondary is concentrating on the receivers who have stayed wide.

I'm hoping for NONE of three of things you mentioned.

1)Read Option - While Cutler can run, he shouldn't. We can't afford any injuries and he's taken roughly 1,429 hits since becoming a Bear a few years back. He's one good hit away from being a vegetable, as I see it. No designed running for him, period.

2)QB runs on short yardage - see #1.

3)Wildcat - the gimmick has come and gone as complete failure in the NFL.

Cutler actually does a pretty decent job rolling out though, so I agree.

I honestly expect Trestman to open it up more than the West Coast offense (for JABF99), though I'm sure we will see WC mixed in too.

I agree. I expect (hope) that this will strategically open up a nice vertical game too. If we finally have solid blocking, without having to max protect so much, then that should open up a nice arsenal of weapons to use. This should open up a healthy offense that should be a bear for defenses to stop (pun intended :smile:).

Not much of Wildcat fan myself, but in the NFL do they run it up the middle or to the outside or both? Doesn't seem to do much up here when run up the middle as far as I can recall.

On the Read Option, don't forget that three things can happen, including a pass. No problem for Cutler, going to the RB or passing.

As far as the short yardage QB runs, up here that's usually a backup QB with size and wheels. CFL QB starters get just as banged up (Google Buck Pierce hits and concussions) so the backup gets sacrificed.
