CHICAGO  The Chicago Bears have tabbed former Purdue Boilermakers defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar as their new linebackers coach.
Before Tibesar's lone season at Purdue, he worked under new Bears head coach Marc Trestman with the CFL Montreal Alouttes where he coached the linebackers from 2009-10 before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2011. Tibesar also spent time at Kansas State where he served as the Wildcats' special teams coach (2006) and defensive coordinator (2007-08).
Tibesar inherits a linebackers unit that has just one starter from last season under contract for next year: weak side linebacker Lance Briggs. Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher and strong side linebacker Nick Roach are both scheduled to be unrestricted free agents, as is top reserve Geno Hayes, who signed a one-year deal with the club last offseason.
Tibesar replaces former Bears linebackers coach Bob Babich who departed after nine years to become the defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

im a purdue alum and have been watching purdue football for years, last year tibesar took a bunch of talent and did nothing with it. It looks like trestman is filling all these roles with old coaches that he worked with, I hope this works out.

Tibesar did well enough with the Als LBs to get himself promoted to DC. The Als D dropped off after he left (for a number of reasons). The Montreal fans seemed to like his handiwork.

I'm all for supporting Trestman and I liked the hire. I also know that ALL coaches bring in "buddies", but am I the only one that is starting to get a little, well, unsettled about some of the staff that's coming in. I Like the OC and the DC, and I guess that's important, but position coaches are also important. They are the ones that drill these guys and help implement game plans and schemes as directed by the Coordinators. They are not just "gimme" jobs, they DO have an important role. Truth be told, I really don't know any of these guys and unless they brought in former players, I wouldn't know the alternatives either. Everyone has to start somewhere, I'm just getting a little concerned about the level of CFL influence at Halas Hall.

Aw, I'm probably just worrying too much. I'm sure all will be good...right? Some one give me a shot of confidence please.

Can they be any worse than the guys we just dumped? Darryl Drake? Has he ever talked to Alshon about how to avoid offensive PI calls?

Yeah, I just hope that any Drake-esque coaches are vetted out quick, or at least quicker than the old regime.

Careful... with this kind of talk Soulman's gonna come in here and blither about mental masturbation some more.

I can see that Trestman has a number of sub-coaches coming in that understand what he wants to run. We've seen the entire coaching staff gutted from top to bottom (with a few exceptions). It can help us get off on the right foot, if Trestman has some coaches in place who understand exactly what he wants. Guys who have worked with him successfully in the past.

These sub-coaches seem to be decent. So, it's probably a very smart move on Trestman's part. Why have a mob of clueless new coaches who have to be coached up by Trestman, before they can, in turn, coach up players? And we'll have a lot of new players on the team too.

You don't want to take on more than you can handle, this beginning season, and end up having a total failure.

I wouldn't be too worried. Just give the guy a chance to put his staff and roster together then get to work. I think that Bears fans will find it an upgrade when the 2013 season is done.

Consider that when Trestman went to Montreal, he was going to a new city in a new country with a different culture and language. The league was different, with unique rules, ways of playing, different traditions that go back over a 100 years, and possessing a different terminology. He couldn't simply take his previous football knowledge and stamp it on the Als. He had to learn. Learn the game, learn about players many of whom were totally new to him, likewise the coaching staff. He had to handle the turnover in staff and players, impose a new, stricter regime in a league where laid back is the norm. He turned a middle of the road team into a perennial powerhouse, and it was his first head coaching gig! Just to top things off, he had to buck the dismal history of other NFL to CFL head coaches. Listen to the Als players and coaches; he improved everyone who was willing to put in the effort, even long time vets like Calvillo.

I'm sounding like a Trestman salesman here and I'm not. Hell, he coached the opposition, so he wasn't exactly on my Facebook friends list. My Ticats will have an easier run without him being around. I guess that's the greatest compliment a coach or player can receive; the opposition being glad not to have to face you again.
