As he prepares for free agency for the first time, a healthyBrian Urlacher says he "for sure" wants to play a 14th season, and he hopes that will be with the Chicago Bears.
"Chicago is my home ... Whether I play for the Bears or not that's my home," Urlacher said Tuesday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN Chicago 1000. "I want to be there and hopefully we can work something out but if not I'll go somewhere else."
Brian Urlacher joins Waddle & Silvy to discuss his future with the Bears, his health and his impending free agency.
Urlacher dealt with injuries during his 13th season in Chicago. He had a slow recovery from a knee injury suffered in the last game of the 2011 season, and a knee scope during training camp set him back further. He played 12 games this season before a hamstring injury sidelined him for the final four games. Urlacher said Tuesday he would have been able to play in the playoffs if the Bears had qualified.
Urlacher said his knee feels good and still believes he can "play a little bit" after a frustrating 2012 season.
"I have no questions about that," Urlacher said. "At times I felt like I was playing pretty well. I was just so inconsistent. It was frustrating for me too as a player ... I was never really in football shape. It was very frustrating for me to be out there and just not be able to do what I normally do. I think I can get back there though just through training in the offseason and practicing. Gosh, I missed so much practice last year. It was frustrating."
After nine seasons playing in former head coach Lovie Smith's defense, Urlacher has backed off comments in which he said he only wanted to play for Smith, who has decided to sit out the 2013 season after failing to land a head-coaching job. New defensive coordinator Mel Tucker ran a similar defense in Jacksonville.
General manager Phil Emery and new head coach Marc Trestman were non-committal when asked over the past month about Urlacher's Bears future. Urlacher said he understands the Bears front office "have more important things to take care of right now" and isn't concerned that he hasn't heard from them. Free agency begins March 15.
Urlacher, who will be 35 by training camp, acknowledged that a pay cut is "fair" for a player of his age.
"When you look at my age it's going to be hard to not give them a discount," Urlacher said. "I'm not going to make what I was making in the past, how about that? Does that make sense? That's fair."
Asked if he could envision a painful sight for Bears fans -- Urlacher wearing the green and gold of the rival Green Bay Packers, Urlacher said: "I've never thought about it, but the way things go now in the NFL, the ways guys jump around on teams I guess nothing is out of the realm these days. I never pictured that but you never know what's going to happen. ... You definitely don't want to say yes to that question because I don't think that's a possibility. Even if it was I don't know that I would want to do that, to tell you the truth."
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Geez could he have set the table for return any better? Now all that remains is for Emery to serve up the contract. The price tag shouldn't even be all that much of an issue.

If the price is right, bring him back. Just a matter of the Bears not making an insulting offer and Urlacher not asking for more than Emery thinks he is worth.
Not sure if he is in their plans the way Emery has kinda ignored the question about re-signing him.

It really seems like a no-brainer to them. It's only us, thr fans that think Urlacher won't be back. Same for Devin, unless it got a few draft picks back.

Urlacher looked exceptionally solid throughout the 2011 season. I do believe it could be as he says, that the injury kept him from being in shape and ready for 2012. I really do think that's what played a big part of his off year here.
He'll be in game shape and 100% prepared for 2013, since this off season he can work hard to get ready in a normal way.
We do need to get his replacement NOW, and yes, sign Brian for a 1 or 2 year contract that is heavy on incentives (he'll have to produce to get the really big money). Begin coaching up the youngster to step into Brian's shoes in 2014 or at the latest 2015.

Does anyone know how much he made last year? I really hope is willing to be reasonable on a contract to stay with Chicago as that would be in the best interests of both Urlacher and the Bears. It would also allow them to focus more on the o-line this year to get that straightened out before having to worry about replacing Urlacher. We don't have a 3rd round pick this year, so we will be very limited as to the ability to draft talent this year.

Yes we do. And now that we have new coaches, i think we will be addressing the age of our defense. Might take a few years since we are going to be focused on offense, but we definitely need to draft a new MLB.
And seeing as how Lach is amiable to a paycut, then theres no reason why Emery cant get it done. I think Lach wants to retire on his terms, and as a Bear, and it seems he is willing to work with the Bears to make this happen, so thats a good sign.
I'm trying//to let go//of maybe//but maybe's just so//very interesting//Oh, what a thing.

Price to me means everything here when it comes to lach. But if we do bring him back I hope if they see his future successor they don't pass him up just cause he is coming back
