Cleveland, Cincy and Indy are going to be the big spenders this offseason; if they choose to be. We'll be in that much lower 2nd teir.

Thanks to LB and JABF for the cap posts.

As much as it may hurt our d-line short term, i would listen to trade offers, if we franchised Melton. If we could pull off a first (I would imagine that would be worth it to Indy), we could put a big dent in the time it would take to rebuild the o-line. If some team falls in love with him (like the vikings did with Allen), and would part with 2 first rounders, you absolutely make that trade.

    Dallas $2.3M -$18.2M

If that is a neg 18mil, I highly doubt that Melton is going to Dallas over staying w/Chicago.....

It is negative 18 mil. It's a screwed up franchise.

Yeah well that a really big IF for a DT who may get you 6-8 sacks per year on average vs a 20 sack plus per year guy like Allen. Even great DTs don't command what All Pro DEs do. Not in salary and not in trade value.

But I don't disagree with you IF someone would give over a two pick package like that which would give you at least one choice high enough to get a replacement for him and we would need to replace him.

I'm kind of surprised that more people don't realize his value and how much better our run defense was this year and our pass defense because he could disrupt and bring pressure every play. The double teams he was drawing made things much easier for Wootton and Izzy to up their sack numbers from LDE to equal Peps at RDE.

The guy is a 26 year old DT who's still has upside, he's worth what a top ten guy gets paid, and we should be prepared to pay it. Guys like Melton, Wootton, Paea, Collins, and maybe even McC if they keep him at DE are young players, they're good, and they're future of that DLine.

Don't we have enough problems with other line to deal with without needing to replace guys on the other side of the ball too when have LB needs to worry about first?

But for a team like Jacksonville, it would make perfect sense. They had the WORST d-line in NFL history last year, and could possibly get a young, pro bowl DT for a 1st, 2 2nds or something similar; that would be a great deal with them, as that would have a proven building block and a high draft pick to expediate the process. Just saying, some teams do have legitimate enough concerns that it's not an unrealistic possibility, but just unprobable for high quality/quantity picks.

I recognize his value but I also recognize we have a cap issue. We extend him we lose else where. I guess I'm being selfish and want more money spent on the offense. Also I recognize as good as he was is that just the peppers effect? We see the suh effect on the lions dline. Just something to think about

    I agree.

That's my worry. We are going to see a lot more personnel changes with this team this year, than a lot of folks realize. It may make sense to keep some of the things in place that ARE working right. Why nuke the team anymore than we already are? Pretty soon you're ruining the 2013 season unnecessarily.

This defense is performing at a top-5 level right now. A large part of that success is our dline. The defense is fairly set right now. Let's not screw with it, if we don't have to.

People have talked about replacing Cutler too. All of this seems so unnecessary (crazy) to me. It's like we need a new set of tires on a car, and we're considering ripping out the engine and transmission too. Just replace the tires for now. Let's not get crazy.

i think he just re-tweeted the article because he liked how people are finally beginning to realize how talented he is. He has stated that he wants to remain in Chicago and he has re-tweeted people telling him to stay in Chicago. I can't see the logic in letting him go. If we did we would need to replace him, we already don't have much DT depth and we can't let a pro bowler go. I would even say he is better than Suh. He disappeared in the final games because he was injured, not unproductive. If we lose him, we lose our pass rush. I'm biased because he is one of my favorite Bears but I think everyone can agree that he is great.
