Im 100% fine with Melton leaving. I know most of you wont agree but hes a bit undersized in a true 4-3 scheme. A 3 point tech guy needs to be bigger. But if Dallas wants to pay him, buh bye... we can use the money on the Oline and maybe another WR like Bowe or Moss.
Saw that as well... Stein and Emery can't get in a bidding war for him b/c they just too many positions to fill this off-season. Melton has been a pet project of Rod Marinelli's since he was drafted so with him as DL coach in Dallas now I can see why the article was written and why Melton has intere$t.
What Melton lacks in size to overpower people he does make it up with his short-space quickness to fill gaps quick. He started the year out on fire, but the last several weeks of the season he was almost non-existent out there.
not sure what Dallas cap space is, but I heard everyone is pretty much hurting. Also not sure that DL is where their issues lie. They have OL issues also, and they need a rb to backup Murray. Not sure about anything else.
**Sidenote, it's going to be an interesting FA period b/c from what I heard only Cleveland has a ton of cap space, everyone else is pretty tight or in the red.
At 6'3" and 295lbs he's the ideal size for a 3t DT. That's almost identical to the weight Tommie Harris played at and bigger than one of the all time greats John Randle who was 6'1" and 280lbs. UT's are gap shooters and pass rushers and aren't expected to hold their gap against double team blocks like two gap NTs. Those guys should weigh 310lbs or more but not UTs playing a 3 technique.
It would be a huge mistake to let a young DT with Melton's talent leave and I'm 99.9% certain they won't even if it means tagging him. This was only his second year starting and he's become a great all around player. He has 6 sacks, 32 solo tackles and 2 forced fumbles this year and who knows how many pressures and hits. He was every bit as good at DT as Pep was at DE and both made the Pro Bowl.
I don't care who you sign for the OLine that guy who not be more valuable to the team in general than Melton is. He's 26 years old and just now coming into his prime and if he stays healthy he'll be even better than Tommie Harris was in his prime. Emery would be a fool not to re-sign him and Melton has already declared his desire to continue playing in Chicago. That article was from the Dallas paper and it's no more than wishful thinking of their part just like the Trib writes about guys like Clady who the Bears should pursue. Clady won't be going anywhere either.
I'll just add that the cost to tag him would be about $8 mil and change. When you compare that to what a guy like Pep is making or Urlacher made last year or what Peanut is due to make this year that's not out of line for a DT as good as Melton is.
By using the tag or even the threat of it we should be able to control the situation enough to come to an agreement for something in the neighborhood of that tag cost but structured in a more cap friendly manner. Just like with Forte it would hurt to have to tag him but it would hurt more to let him walk for nothing.
By virtue of the fact that we stood our ground with Forte and eventually got the deal done it served notice to other players and their agents that if we decide not to let a player go we'll use whatever means possible to keep him and finally come to a mutually acceptable agreement. If Melton is a guy they choose to keep then he'll be a Bear for a long time.
I like Melton but he wants and will get paid as Top 5 at his position. Not sure if it would be wise to spend that much money on him. Izzy could play DT too. We can overcome that loss if need be. Can find a DT
