Russell Wilson: Marc Trestman Knew I Could Play QB Before N.C. State




At 5-foot-11, he’s seemingly too short to be a successful college – let alone NFL – quarterback.


But when Bears new head coach Marc Trestman was the offensive coordinator at N.C. State, he knew Wilson could play at an elite level.


“(Trestman) was the guy that said, ‘This guy can play.’ I already knew that,” Wilson told The McNeil and Spiegel Show. “I knew my ability, but he came up to me and he was the coach that said, ‘This guy can play. We need to offer this guy (a scholarship) right now.’ So, N.C. State offered me (a scholarship) right on the spot. Coach Trestman knew that I had the ability. I have a lot of respect for coach Trestman. I talk to him probably once a week, maybe a little bit less than that. I talk to him a good amount. We’ve always kept in touch over the years.




“A lot of guys thought I could play, but they didn’t know if I could play just because of my height, but he knew that I could.”


Wilson, as you remember, torched the Bears for 293 yards and two touchdowns in the Seahawks’ win at Soldier Field this season.


Wilson also said Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will benefit from Trestman’s presence.


“Jay Cutler is a tremendous quarterback with a live, live arm and a lot of athletic ability,” Wilson said. “Some people underestimate his ability to maneuver. (Trestman) will do a great job with Jay Cutler. I know that coach Trestman is a tremendous coach and I have so much respect for him.”


Of the 3 big time rookie QBs to come out last year, Russell seems to have the most talent overall, and could certainly be top 5 very soon, if he doesn't hit the sophomore slump. He's also my favorite non-chicago bear/non Chad Pennington football player. If Trestman saw in him what others didn't (until he destroyed the competition in preseason), and he really likes Cutler, I'm VERY confident about Cutler improving next year.

I think plain and simple is the right guy at the right time. We've really done a disservice to Cutler ever since he got here. He's been saddled with a HC who seemed to have no interest at all in what the offense was doing except to turn it over to OC who were either mediocre to begin, out of touch with the current state of the NFL, or a rookie OC with no idea how to design or run an effective offense with the players he had.

He spent three miserable years with no #1 WR and at least the last three with a horrible offensive line who can't protect him. Every year since he arrived until last year all we heard was how the WR were good enough, and the OLine was good enough, and that we had a TE who was as good as other out there all while the defense got fatter and the offense leaner.

I think it's way past the time when Cutler and that offense got a little love too and I think via the hiring of Trestman were finally gonna do it. I'm kinda sick of the Bears offense being the butt of jokes from Packer fans despite the talent we have at QB, WR and RB. Now just put a line in front of Cutler and Forte that will allow them to be productive game in and game out and run an offense suited to the skills of the player we have not who some OC wishes he had and let's get that part of the show on the road.

I'm positive Marc Trestman was a good hire.

I am loving this Tresman hire more and more by the day. I really think he is the right guy at the right time for the Bears.

Makes me happier that whoever we spend a pick on (if we get Matt Scott, I'm getting that jersey immediately) will be a pick well spent.
