The Problem with Devin is that he never was an elite or even good WR.

He thinks at 30 he still has ponential? This is the age where most WRs are trying to prove that they still have something left in the tank and that they can still play at a high level.

Devin has never played at a high level in the first place.

You simply do not know if the new staff can get anything out of him, maybe they can turn him around.

But, Devin is not what you would call a student of the game, and a new system and a poor attitude do not bode well for his prospects of having a killer season.

Another factor is that Brandon and Alshon are the 1 and 2 with Bennett being paid like a #2. So that puts him at #4 at best.

I'm not saying that a #4 reciever cannot have an impact on the game, look at Jacoby Jones for the Ravens. He is the # 3/4 Reciever (Pitta even though he is a TE is a big part of the Recieving corp), and Jones made a couple of huge catches in big games to get them a championship.

If I am Devin Hesters Agent, I tell him to go out there and play for his Football life, and show everone that he can learn and that he can be that elite KR and PR guy again. That forces Chicago to either offer him another contract or makes his propects in FA very good. Because right now no one is overly interested in taking Devin Hester in exchange for anything other than a very low draft pick (6 or 7th round).

Amen unless of course his agent is Rosenhaus which is why I asked. If the Bears release him he gets paid again for negotiating a new deal now instead of a year from now. Never underestimate an agents greed when it comes to putting himself ahead of his client.

But md you are 100% correct as far as what he should do and I think also what we should compel him to do. I would actually be surprised if we got any offers at all for him. KOR are almost a thing of the past unless the NFL sees the error in that kind of thinking and maybe they will after Jones scorched SF with that one yesterday. As it turned out that was the winning TD.

So when you take away or limit his KOR and catches as a WR who is gonna give up a 3rd round pick for a PR, even Devin Hester the PR? I just don't see it. Eric Weems was a pretty good return man himself a couple of years ago and I could imagine what the howling would have been like around here if we'd traded a 3rd round pick for him. Shoot all Marshall cost us was a 3rd and a future 3rd, which is more like a 3rd and a 4th or 5th, and he's an All Pro WR. I don't think you could even get a 5th for him.

Bottom line is that except for the $2 mil and change cap hit for his salary he's probably of more use to us than he is elsewhere if he snaps out of his pout and gets his head straightened around. I'd surely keep him around and see if we couldn't get some of that old Devin magic out of him because if he gets it going again his TDs come in bunches and he's overdue. If it doesn't happen and he's playing like a slug next year we can always release him during the season and let him find a new home then. I'm opposed to releasing players just because they're unhappy at the moment and what we can get in trade isn't worth trading him for.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Broncos got a 4th and a 6th rounder for Tebow, so hopefully we get at least a 5 for Hester. Thanks for the memories Devin, but it appears as if the magic has run out. Time to move on.

Anyhoo, i was gonna put the article, but you can look it up on tribune: It seems rumor has it Hester wants thr change mostly because a lack of any kind of synrrgy with Cutler in the passing game since 09. All speculation, but interesting that the offense is kind of policing itself, if true. Then again Rachal and Spencer are still here.

A 5 for Hester? Keep on dreaming only Miami would be stupid enough to make a deal like that. We might get a 6th rounder if we are lucky but if he has any trade valvue it's gonna be a 7th round, and what would you rather have 7th pick that we are gonna cut most likely anyway or keeping the threath in Hester? I'm gonna take Hester, I can't remember which team it was (I think it was Carolina or Jax) they would give up midfield postions instead of kicking it to Hester. Sure enough he havn't done well the last year and certainly not on WR but he still has this "you never know" factor, next season he might have 3 returns.

So at the end of the day keep Hester if all you can get it's a 7th rounder, the odds of us getting a pro bowler or a starter in the 7th round is just as big as Hester having huge succes as WR.
    Oderint dum metuant.

Well first of all Tebow is a QB or at least some people think he is and second it was the Jets and guess who fired their GM after the season was over. I would be very surprised if anyone offered a 5th round pick for him unless maybe it was KC and Toub was able to talk them into it but they have McCluster don't they?

    From Tribune mailbag;

Devin Hester said, "I know some of the plays I should have made in terms of catching the ball.
But I just wasn't feeling it. My mind wasn't there the majority of the time."
This is from a guy getting paid close to $2 million dollars a year.
After moaning about not being given the opportunity to play wide receiver.
It's time to drop this fool who I admit was one of the greatest return men of all time.
He has not had a return for a TD in two years. He was never a receiver, never a corner.
He was a return man, end of story. How many games has he cost us because his head wasn't in it?
How long must we deal with this unprofessional attitude?

Yep pretty stupid stuff to say but we're dealing with a 30 year old man-child here who's accustomed to being in the spotlight and he hasn't been for quite some time.

To a degree I'm gonna write this off for now and let Trestman and his guys deal with it. Let them evaluate what they can and can't do with him and then put it in front of him, let him know what's expected of him, and see how he responds.

He isn't gonna gain of lose much value between now and next fall. If he steps up to the plate we're good and if not we can release him or trade him later.

I'm not against giving him a chance in Trestman's offense and on KO/PR. But it wouldn't surprise me if he is released at final cuts. If there are better options at WR and he isn't showing his old self in the return game...he's just taking up a roster spot. Cutting him is cap friendly as well.
