Then if we can get competition in with Webb that's gravy but replacing Webb and leaving garza and spencer will leave us just a bad if not worse than we are now

He needs competition, yes but if you watch his run blocking its actually damn good.

If kromer can get him over the hump great if not we need a backup plan

Besides contract years seem to be a grow up or get out for most players in his position

He has potential, but seems to be holding himself back, maybe his security blanket being gone and him looking at a payday if he grows up may help him tap it

But for gods sake make him win a real camp battle...
We all love to bash Webb and he has made it easy and legit to do so in the past no doubt. There's also no doubt, as painfully slow as it might seem, that he's improved noticeably over the last year. He should also benefit even more from Kromer's coaching and entering his final contract year.

Bottom line is...I'm not saying he SHOULD but he very well COULD be starting LT next year. Especially if Emery is unable to lasso a FA vet. I'd rather see him as RT/swing but wanting a FA LT and signing one are two different things. Webb is young, cheap, and durable you do have to give him that. If we can't corral a vet LT, then I could live with:

Webb starting at LT, decision on his future with the Bears delayed until this time next year

Drafting BJones in the late first to play OC, trading down to net a 3rd round pick to boot (which is very realistic given that he will miss the pre-draft stuff due to surgery recovery)

Drafting a LG prospect in round 2-3 to compete with Brown (Warford?)

Drafting a project OT in the late rounds for Kromer to develop, as he's shown a knack for

Yeah, I see needing to use 3 draft picks on OL this year if we can't sign a FA LT vet.

While that is generally true, he held up against several all pro talent much better than expected (not saying he's getting a good grade or anything). I've noticed a lot of the problem came from blitzes that attacked the middle of the line. Basically, the only reason to keep Webb as a starter is if there are no practical FA solutions, and if we can improve the interior of the line and wait another year on a LT, I'd be fine with that, too. People really seem to forget how bad the interior was because of how seemlessly Omiyale turned into Webb for 3-5 years straight. Reading what I just read, please blow up the whole left side of the line.

Emotions are a luxury I have as a fan when it comes to player evaluation.

Coaches, managers and owners have to have the emotions of Mr. Spock, not me. I think Emery and Trestman are the perfect guys for this team. They are your typical pencil-necked geeks who love numbers and stats and are so busy with them and they are so new to the team and the players that they have absolutely no emotional ties to anyone.

Oh, and Webb SUCKS! Just maybe not so much as he used to, and certainly not as much as some of the other guys we've had over the years. ;-)
Hey, I get it. And I include myself in this category. I'm not throwing stones.

I was so upset with Urlacher's play last season, that I was all for giving up on the guy. But after I thought about it a bit, I figured that I was really "reacting" emotionally, and not thinking this through all the way. Brian may be done. But he may not be. He looked like crap at times early in the season. He looked slow. He couldn't get off blocks to save his soul. But now that he's had more time to heal and get into shape - and later this year complete a training camp, he may be able to play pretty well for another year or two.

    Or not.

We (fans) don't know. But if the new coaching staff is decent - they will know. And I trust their judgement. If they say Urlacher is done. Then in my mind he's done. If they say he's got something good left in the tank, and can help the Bears, then I'm 100% OK with that.

Same with the other players on our roster. I'm in a "wait and see" mode. Let's let the new coaching staff take a fresh look at the players. We may find that some of them (not just Webb) are crap and need to go. Or some we think are crap, MAY be good players (including Webb).

I'm not dissing the fans, but just making an observation.

I'm with you. I know you're not throwing stones, and I'm in the same boat. I'm just saying that it's all right. That it is fun to dump on the worst player on the team and it's okay. Even if in this case he isn't the worst on the team anymore.

Reputations are hard to overcome. Webb has to earn my respect. He did take a couple steps in that direction this year, but he's reached Omiyale level. He needs to pass Fred Miller, Pace, Terrence Metcalf and St. Clair.

Hmmm, should we do a poll on who is the all-time worst O-lineman from the last 10 years?

I like the idea of 3 OL picks maybe 1,2,6 or 1,3,4 if we can net a trade down for jones

As far as Webb I think that barring a vet LT being signed, he will most likely be competing in camp for the LT job and any hope he has of a real payday down the road (sometimes that's the only motivator with guys)

I'm not sure inchi but I would think they're being rated solely on those plays where they were responsible for protection. Otherwise you'd have to split that stat too just like they split sacks.

As long as Webb has to compete for his job I'm ok w/whatever they decide. If he can't hack it w/o much help and the TE position is going to be more of a focus next season then Webb probably isn't the guy. Bottom line is the guy has had plenty of years, help, guru's and patience to develop. Just improving a few spots might not cut it anymore.

But y'know... nobody threw a prettier deep ball than The Sex Dragon.
And therein lies the major problem with Webb. They keep writing about his immaturity which is obvious but it's his lack of common sense probably more than his IQ that contributes to his immaturity and what makes him hard to coach. This is where Kromer has to make his toughest decision. Can this kid stop his stupid self promoting behavior and actually be taught to do what he needs to do. Guess we'll find out soon.

We back a guy, or hate a guy, based on emotion, rather than facts and logic. We fail to accept the fact that sometimes young players who start out bad, can improve and end up being good players.

I'm not talking about Webb here. I'm talking about players in general. We need to have an open mind, especially with a new coaching staff, that looks very promising at developing talent.

We have a TON of things to fix on the Chicago Bears this off-season. There are question marks on offense and defense. I'm hoping these new coaches can work with some of our question mark players and we can maximize our draft resources and FA money to do the most good. I'm hoping this anyway.
I think the emotional aspects of how we feel about players like Webb and even Cutler do cloud logic and common sense. In order to at least maintain status quo every starter we dust has to be replaced with one of at equal if not better quality so if your a real GM and/or HC those enter into the equation. That ain't a fuckin' Madden game they're playing. It's real players and real dollars.

I gotta laugh at some of the crap some fans (not so much around here because we have knowledgeable members) come up with like the guy in Pompei's column who wondered about signing TO to play TE. I'd love to ask the guy where he got that idea but I'm afraid the answer would be "well I play him there in my 2009 Madden and he always does well for me".

It's nice to theorize about what should be done but sometimes we need to reign that back in to what realistically can be done. Something like an idea of getting rid of Cutler when we aren't even close to having a guy who could take his place is a dead end idea. We have far bigger fish to fry and the best thing we can do there is see if we can't get him to agree to a 2 year extension rather than a 4 year if Trestman is still unsure about him. It will take at least two years to even come close to replacing him.

We invested some time and effort in Webb and a few others who are relatively cheap vets who at worst can be effective backups if we can find others who can upgrade their positions and I think there isn't a day that goes by that Phil Emery isn't looking to do that wherever he can. He's not self-delusional like Angelo was.

OK, soap box sermon is over and coffee and danish are being served in the church basement.
