Reputations are hard to overcome. Webb has to earn my respect. He did take a couple steps in that direction this year, but he's reached Omiyale level. He needs to pass Fred Miller, Pace, Terrence Metcalf and St. Clair.
Hmmm, should we do a poll on who is the all-time worst O-lineman from the last 10 years?
He's surpassed OMG already but then that's was about as hard as a 4 cyl Honda passing a 69 VW van. Fred Miller was a decent enough RT but the rest were bums. Webb is actually beyond the bum stage having entered into just not all that good land.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I was so upset with Urlacher's play last season, that I was all for giving up on the guy. But after I thought about it a bit, I figured that I was really "reacting" emotionally, and not thinking this through all the way. Brian may be done. But he may not be. He looked like crap at times early in the season. He looked slow. He couldn't get off blocks to save his soul. But now that he's had more time to heal and get into shape - and later this year complete a training camp, he may be able to play pretty well for another year or two.
Or not.
We (fans) don't know. But if the new coaching staff is decent - they will know. And I trust their judgement. If they say Urlacher is done. Then in my mind he's done. If they say he's got something good left in the tank, and can help the Bears, then I'm 100% OK with that.
Same with the other players on our roster. I'm in a "wait and see" mode. Let's let the new coaching staff take a fresh look at the players. We may find that some of them (not just Webb) are crap and need to go. Or some we think are crap, MAY be good players (including Webb).
I'm not dissing the fans, but just making an observation.
Other examples are Danieal Manning and Major Wright. The expectation was so high for these guys to be the next Mike Brown that the fans wanted to hang them for not being pro bowlers straight out of the gate. After being given time to develop both are very good safeties (not Mike Brown, but still good safeties). Player development is a huge part of drafting, but it is usually over-looked. Coaches have to be able to relate to these kids coming out of college and figure out the way they learn best. There are not a lot of Peyton Manning's coming out. Development is the #1 trait that I hope to see from the coaching staff. (game planning and scheme are important too)

I understand where JABF is coming from. Some guys take longer to develop than others and it stands to reason that guys that are more immature and intellectually challenged are those type of guys. The league has been around longer than any of us and there have been plenty of Pro-Bowlers that had to wait a few years before the light bulb went on. Unfortunately, there are many, many more where the light bulb showed up broken, and a lot of fans don't have the patience to find out. The thing is, that line between "lets give him one more year" and "let him fish or cut bait" is a fine one that the typical fan doesn't care about. I'd like to think those of us on this board are sophisticated enough to see traits that give us hope or say "He's never gonna get it". Not that we are experts, but more so than your typical Sunday's Only fan.
My opinion on Webb has changed slightly since the end of this season (and I do mean, slightly). And it has ONLY changed because of the arrival of Trestman and Kromer. Lovie and Tice were NEVER going to get anything out of this guy and I think he showed just enough to give him one more TC to see if he can grasp what the hell he's supposed to do, but man, that leash should be shooooooooort.
I think the thing that drive me so NUTS about fans and media (including the original article to this thread), is that so many say he is so quick and athletic for his size. To that I say no, no he is not! It's one of my pet peaves that people hear something that for some reason they like and they continue to repeat it as though it's fact when there is no truth to what they say. It's like the old saying that if you tell the same lie long enough and often enough (see both sides of American politics), people will start to believe it. If he is so athletic and quick for his size, then he must be 7' and weight 380 Lbs., and if that's the case, then he's too damn big to play the position. If he DOES actually have that kind of athleticism and quickness, then he needs to show it every play and not just once every three games.
I am hopeful that Kromer will be able to coach up ALL our linemen and not just WEBB, and if he can, then great, but if not, I am so done with just about ALL these guys.
The Greatest form of revenge is MASSIVE success.

Why is everybody hating on Madden? Yeah, you can get some stupid stuff out of it, but if you run the ball more than 5 times and can throw to someone other than Brandon Marshall (but not Kellen Davis), you're already more capable of a balanced gameplan than we've seen in Chicago for some time, lol.

Most of the Saints games I watched they seldom give help with their TE's. If they give help it's usually with a RB.

Different offseason, same shit. Maybe I'll be told to eat a bag of dicks again.
I really don't care if Webb is left as the starting LT next season, IF there are moves made on the interior. I understand that we cannot possibly realistically hope for five new pro-bowl quality offensive linemen. One would be nice, and a rook or two for development sake. That was more than we could ever get out of that worthless asshat JA. If that FA is a guard or center, okay. We have to deal with Webb, chip and help out on that side when necessary, but the line will still be better than last year. If they do nothing to improve the line, there is a pretty good chance that someone will go postal.
Prolly me.

I do care if he is starting next season at LT (he should be kept as a backup as he is a cheap swing tackle) because there are at least 25 LT in the league that are better than he is (and most of the ones that are ranked behind him were not given as much help as he was).

Unless by some miracle we can get Albert or Clady we're going to be stuck with Webb for another year as LT. With that being said we need a G & C ASAP. I bet the local fast food joints will be happy.

If the blocking scheme is about to get much more complicated/modern I can't see it helping Webb's case. If he showed progress with Tice's simplistic system I'm not exactly confident about Webb improving his football IQ.
