OLINE: "Syracuse's Justin Pugh blazes a new trail at Senior Bowl"
Jonathan Cooper in the 1st & maybe this guy in the 2nd. Howie Long's son looks good too, but he's almost too tall to be a prototypical guard. He's built more like a tackle.
But this kid (Justin Pugh) looks like he'd be a rock solid guard for many many years to come. Smart kid too.

Syracuse offensive lineman Justin Pugh is the only player in Senior Bowl practices this week who could have come back for another year of college. Instead, he's here in Mobile looking to prove he's ready for the NFL.
Pugh and Alabama's D.J. Fluker became the first non-seniors invited to the Senior Bowl this year under executive director Phil Savage's plan to include fourth-year juniors who have already graduated and declared for the draft. Fluker, who was in town Sunday and Monday for interviews and the weigh-in, was unable to participate in practices or the game due to a calf injury, but Pugh has been an active member of the North squad all week and he said he's grateful for the opportunity.
"I didn't think I'd have any opportunity to play in this game. Last year, my buddy was in the same situation -- (current New England Patriots defensive lineman) Chandler Jones -- he came out early and he wasn't able to play. So I texted him: 'I'm in the Senior Bowl.' And he was like, 'Ah, you lucky son of a gun.'
"So I'm honored. This is a great thing for the NFL and the Senior Bowl, rewarding guys like me that worked hard in college, made sure they got their degree. We're student-athletes for a reason, so make sure you get the degree. That's something no one can take away from you."
For Pugh, the son of a teacher, leaving college without a degree was not an option. So he said he took five classes last summer in order to graduate and give himself the option of leaving Syracuse early.
"My Mom told me if I ever wanted to play in the NFL, I had to get my degree first. She's a teacher, so she's real big on education. So before the season even started she was like, 'You'd better make sure you take enough classes so you can graduate or else you're not going anywhere.'"
Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage said Wednesday that the move to include fourth-year graduated juniors has been well received.
"I think any time you get more talent in here, it's important," NFL analyst Mike Mayock said early this week. "And I like the caveat that they're fourth-year juniors who have already graduated."
Savage added that Pugh, who is part of the North squad, has "represented himself well" in workouts this week. "He's shown tackle-guard versatility. He's a smart player," Savage said. "There's no doubt that he'll be more prepared for the combine and the rest of his pre-draft scenario than if he had not been here."
That was the goal, Pugh said -- that and proving that he belongs.
"I want people to say I compete and I'm a tough kid," he said. "That's something I take pride in, going out here and being physical and being a smart player. I want them to know I can be able to pick up the playbook and run with it."

Why would Emery draft two OGs in a row?

See, that old Jerry Angelo thinking is that something like this is an abomination. Just reach into the toilet and get your oline guys. Pull out a "stinky one" and screw the offense and the fans. I'd like to see a GM with the balls to actually draft talented OL players. Imagine that.
How about actually drafting a couple of stellar young men and build an oline that will last the next decade?
Look, I'd be fine if they wanted to go with a pure center along with a guard. But the thought of pulling the trigger on two guards is fine too.

Because we also need a LT and center. Louis will hopefully re-sign which means we just need to find a new LG. No need to draft two guards. There are just too many holes to fill.

I wouldn't have a problem with drafting two guards if we already had a LT and C. Unfortunately this is not the case right now.
Your idea is fine, believe me. I just don't know if that is enough to upgrade the NFL's worst oline. Just my opinion.

So you're saying Louis, who's by far our best offensive lineman, won't be back with the Bears next season?

No idea. All i do know is that its not unreasonable to draft 2 Guards if thats the BOP available to Emery. At best, both would be better then what we have now, at worst, it gives us depth.

I should explain too, that I'm assuming that they'll fix the tackle position through free agency (and I certainly could be wrong about this). And I don't know squat about how Lance Louis will be after this injury. If I understand it correctly, he won't be able to attend anything, not even training camp this year. But he is expected to be able to play in the regular season. So, who knows what kind of shape he'll be in. And, it's possible that he will NEVER be the same player again (I hope this is not the case, but you never know).
The other guards on our roster are question marks (in my mind anyway).
I don't think the Bears will draft back to back guards, but I'd be fine with it.

idk if the type of oline Kromer prefers is what NO gm went for but if it is this guy looks small compared to guys like Nicks and Grubbs

*cough**cough*Tommie Harris/Tank johnson drafted back to back at teh same position*cough**cough**cough*
Also, I would be happier with a C and G, but would be fine with 2 guards, if they could use Louis at another position (I'm sorry, but I really thought he was the best RT we've had in a long time, good enough to not need to upgrade). Regardless, if we see no more than 2 new faces on the o-line, either Emery is avoiding drafting trash (I mean, come on, lol, this really is a high quality roster, we just needed a dude that could get a few more defensive players and a good offensive line) or Emery is getting an Angelo-embolism (symptoms include: loss of ability to explain draft picks, drafting Dan Bazuin, trading down at every opportunity to get those coveted 5th round picks).
