i keep reading somewhere that the 49ers may have too many draft picks, because if they were to go through with all of them, that'd be a significant turnover on their roster, and they kinda don't need that. I also read that the "points" would match up if we traded back with them, giving our 1st and 2nd for their 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks. I'm kinda lazy on that front, but it sounds kinda cool, but it also sounds kinda Angeloean.
I want more responses before I jump in as fully as 4Da did but there's a couple of misconception in posts I want to clear up. Jonathan Cooper does not normally play at less than 300lbs and he doesn't come from a small school program. That would be Eric Fisher. I sick of people thinking that players from the SEC are all Gods gift to football. There are other great programs that produce excellent OLineman too.
His coaches asked him lose 15-20lbs for the no huddle offense they planned to run in 2012. Prior to that he played in a pro style offense at a weight of 310-315lbs. His Sr. Bowl measurables were 6' 2 5/8ths" and his weight was 310lbs. He's plenty big to play LG in a zone blocking scheme. The Broncos have been doing it for years with some OGs who do weigh less than 300lbs. However, Cooper does not. He's just 10lbs short of what Louis goes and he may easilly be able to play at 315-320lbs in the pros once he's had some conditioning and weight room work at a pro level.
Athletic guard, but with some girth in his lower body to anchor against oncoming tackles. Tough to beat in pass protection, possesses foot quickness, bend, and arm extension to mirror. Excellent mobility behind the line, regularly pulls to the left and right. Excellent at adjusting quickly to negate moving targets on the second level. Springs out of his stance to reach linebackers in the run game or to jump inside of tackles to seal off a rushing lane. Used as a personal protector on a moving pocket. Shows good hand strength, popping his defender quickly off the snap and getting inside hand position. Flashes some attitude when challenged, maintaining contact and chasing his man out of the play. Quick recovery speed to get up after a cut block. Good pad level and surge coming out of his stance. Gets vertical movement on his man on base and double blocks. Constantly works his feet and swings his hips to get position on reach blocks. Rolls his hips through contact, and works to place his body between his man and the ball carrier. Weaknesses
Has only average height and bulk, and is a bit long-legged for the position (though he should continue to grow in an NFL strength and conditioning program). Functional strength is only adequate; stronger tackles get a bit of push against him in pass protection. Will have occasional missed assignments in pass protection. NFL Comparison
Ben Grubbs (some of you wanted us to sign Grubbs last year now here's our chance to draft one much like him for a lot less $$$)Bottom Line
Cooper, an extremely athletic left guard, racked up a number of all-conference awards during his four years starting, capping it off with a first-team All-American selection as a senior. He has the athleticism to play in a number of different schemes. Due to his ability to lead the way on runs and outstanding pass protection skills, he projects to be one of the first guards selected in the draft. He showed improved on his functional strength in his senior season, but he needs to continue adding bulk and strength.
I think with a year of some serious NFL style weight room work he could easily add 10lbs of muscle bulk without losing any agility. This kid is as perfect a LG for us as you could find.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Sounds like we would go from #20 to #31 in first and second draft picks for a gain of a third rounder? Thats the way I'm reading it.

Hard to say, if we weren't able to trade down I might go with Cooper at LG because that will solve that problem, and then try to get an OC in 2th round to learn under Garza. I wouldn't go after Fluker as I remain confident in Emery fixing the LT issue at FA. Just not the best news that Cheifs wants to sign new contract with Albert.
I'm not convinced LG cannot be filled w/one of the guys we have on the roster right now in Carimi or James Brown. That leaves C and OT.
My question is what is w/Edwin Williams; he's been w/the team for some time now behind Garza, is he ready to step up? If so then we need a backup C/G and I see no reason to take backup G/C in the 1st or 2nd. We are stilll in need of a LT but I think that happens via FA.
LT FA/Webb/Brandon
LG Carimi/Brown
C E Williams/draft pick
RG Louis/Brown/draft pick
RT Scott/Webb/Carimi
Now that's all depending on if the stories out of Halas that Carimi was playing hurt all year are true, AND Brown is able to step up, AND Williams is ready to be a starting Center(if not why is he still on the team?). But that means we can afford to go C/G in the 2nd(if an LT were to fall to the Bears at 20, grab them regardless). It also says a lot about the youth potential on this team.

Well, if he falls to us and we select him, I will still be happy as a clam that we are upgrading our O-Line, and I am NOT suggesting that this young man would not be a great pick, ESPECIALLY if he is another Ben Grubbs. You could be right about his coaches asking him to drop weight. I have no way of knowing that, and if his optimum playing weight IS at 310 to 320, then that's great. He did show up at the Sr. Bowl (I think) at 311, but he was reported as playing his college games at 295. The rigors of the season can keep you lighter than you want to be, so, hell, I really don't know what his playing weight was, and nobody does other than his coaches. Many of the scouting reports suggest that he lacks optimal girth, but that he is very athletic for pulling. That's pretty much all I'm saying. The combine should be able to tell us more about his comparison with Grubbs, and to be fair, Grubbs had similar negatives about his girth, but he reportedly played at 318 in college, which is a bit more than 295 reported for Cooper.
Hell, who knows what the truth is, and I would be happy as hell if we select him, because he will likely be a great OG for a long time. I would simply go in a different direction for other guys that I also think will be great. ANY help we get for our sorry ass line will be more than welcome in my book, and Cooper is no exception.
