Tag in play for Bears, Melton on Monday
By Brad BiggsTribune reporter9:35 a.m. CST, February 15, 2013
The Chicago Bears can play tag with Henry Melton beginning on Monday, a measure that would ensure the defensive tackle remains in place for 2013.
NFL teams have from Monday through March 4, a 15-day window, to apply the franchise tag in advance of free agency and the start of the new league year on March 12. Barring a multi-year contract for Melton, it seems like a good bet general manager Phil Emery will elect to use the franchise tag for the second consecutive year after applying it to running back Matt Forte in 2012. Doing so could lock up nearly one-third of the team’s salary cap in four defensive stars, though.
The goal with Forte was to sign him to a long-term contract and the sides hammered that out with a four-year deal before the July deadline. Emery could choose a similar path with Melton, who would be guaranteed $8.3 million if he is tagged and he signs the one-year tender.
Melton had a career-high seven sacks in 2011 and followed up with six in 2012 but he was a much more complete player this past season and made the Pro Bowl for the first time. He defended the run better and finished with 33 tackles, a team-high 24 quarterback pressures, five tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.
Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker unveiled his vision on Thursday for an “attacking, penetrating front” while maintaining the Cover Two scheme the Bears used the previous nine seasons under Lovie Smith. That defense will not work effectively without a disruptive three-technique, the type of player the 26-year-old Melton has developed into since being selected as a defensive end in the fourth round in 2009.
The Bears declined to talk about any personnel goals on Thursday and Emery could be waiting to connect with Melton’s agent Jordan Woy at the NFL Scouting Combine next week in Indianapolis. Late in the season, Melton characterized contract talks between the parties as “back and forth.” He told the Tribune he believes he is the top interior 4-3 lineman in the league.
“We're still playing the 4-3 … there is not another better D-tackle in the league than myself," Melton said. "I feel like that."
The top of the pay scale for defensive tackles reaches $10 million annually. It's doubtful Melton, who earned $565,000 in 2012, can approach that unless he reaches the free market and finds multiple bidders. In Forte’s contract, the Bears guaranteed him $17.1 million, nearly identical to what he would have received playing under the franchise tag for two seasons. It could be the Bears ultimately take a similar strategy with Melton in long-term talks but they’ll have to secure him with the tag first.
Carving out $8.3 million for Melton will give the Bears a considerable amount of their salary cap in four defensive players. The Bears currently have $31.8 million in cap room devoted to three defensive players – end Julius Peppers ($16,383,333), cornerback Charles Tillman ($8 million) and linebacker Lance Briggs ($7,416,670). Adding Melton, the team’s fourth Pro Bowl defensive player, at $8.3 million would push the cap hit for the four players to $40.1 million – almost one-third of the team’s cap space.
There are ways for the Bears to create more space. Tillman, who turns 32 next week, is in the final year of his contract. If the club chose to extend him, it could lower his cap figure. The Bears could always consider a restructure for Peppers but doing that would only push forward the issue.
Plenty to consider with NFL shopping season not far off.

I hope he doesn't want to be paid like the best DT in the league because that means loads of money. Hope he signs but to the right price.

I hope so too... we don't need a surprise from Melton....

I'm hoping for the "home town discount" from Melton. But who knows? He may go for the big bucks from another team.
Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

If they can't come to an agreement I'm 99.99% certain Emery will tag him. You don't let a guy like that walk when you have no one to replace him with and if he did let him go then he'd be forced to think about spending that first on a 3t DT rather than an OLineman. One thing kind of affects another.
“We're still playing the 4-3 … there is not another better D-tackle in the league than myself," Melton said. "I feel like that."
Of course he believes he's the best in the NFL and he may be but if I were negotiating my contract I'd say that too even if I wasn't. I mean what else could he say, "I think I'm the 7th best DT in the NFL and I want to be paid like it"? So we chew up $8.3 mil now and that kind of forces Emery to restructure some deals and also give him some incentive to get a longer term deal done in order to reduce that cap hit.
Redoing Tillman's deal should be a no brainer and Pep's too if he'll agree. Even though it just delays the inevitable we're in better shape in 2014 than we are now so moving some cap money around makes good sense.

Well, seeing how Trestman wants to keep the defense the same, Melton will be an essential part of this team. He's staying, and so is Urlacher.

Bad news... hoped we could get him for less than that. He won't accept a contract with less money than the Tag.
He's a good DT

Just like Forte his deal will need to average somewhere in the neighborhood of $8 mil per year. That's about the going rate but it's not a huge problem when you consider that we won't have Urlacher's $8 mil per year to contend with anymore so it's really just moving money from one defensive star to another.
The key is getting these other deals done so that we have an idea of just how much we can afford to offer Urlacher. Let's say for shits and grins that's it's half of what he was getting. About $4 mil. Well if we extend Tillman contract another couple of year and we should be able to gain about $4 mil in added cap space from that so there's Urlacher's salary and we keep everybody happy. The money is there they just have to position it right.

yes, but it really does limit our chances going forward. Could save money if Melton would accept 1 million less. That would be 1 million more to spend on a TE

A million less when? You can arrange the deal to pay out less this year and save a million maybe but over the life of the deal three or four mil isn't huge money for a contract that's probably gonna run $35-$40 mil.
Guys get what they get. He's a top ten DT at the very least and maybe even top five and he's gonna want to be paid that way. Ngata's deal averages $9.7 mil per year so if we signed him for $8 mil per year that would be a pretty fair bargain I'd say.

fair bargain? 8 million isn't a fair bargain for a DT that isn't that dominant. 1 million per year isn't much, that's right. 1 Million could be the difference between Davis and Keller as TE on our Roster. I think every penny counts in the Cap World.
