Bears Coaching Staff Sees FB Role Differently Than Tice..........
Bears coaches eye fullback's role

It is no secret the Chicago Bears are in need of a pass-catching tight end and they could probably use a traditional fullback as they revamp the offense.
When head coach Marc Trestman and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer last worked together with the Raiders, combining forces on a team that reached Super Bowl XXXVII, Oakland had a talented blocking back in Jon Ritchie.
Now, Kromer comes from the the Saints where he was the offensive line coach the past four seasons and the running backs coach in 2008. New Orleans used multiple fullbacks in that period, most recently Jed Collins, who spent a month on the Bears’ practice squad back in 2008.
The Bears were without a pure fullback this past season, a position coordinator Mike Tice felt was better filled by a more versatile performer. Rookie Evan Rodriguez, a fourth-round draft pick from Temple, lined up at tight end for nearly all of training camp before having his jersey number changed to 48 for a move to the backfield. He’s not ideal as a fullback and the belief is Trestman’s staff will move him back to tight end.
“I would prefer to have both, a traditional fullback and a tight end that moves around,” Kromer said. “If you have both then you really have what you are looking for if you have a fullback and an F tight end that can move around and a fullback at times and be a tight end, not a point of attack tight end.”
The Bears had a fullback on the roster in 2011 when they picked up Tyler Clutts but he was traded to the Texans at final roster cutdowns back in September to acquire cornerback Sherrick McManis, a core special teams player.
Running backs coach Skip Peete, who was also a member of that Raiders coaching team with Trestman and Kromer, said the Bears staff is still working through the playbook and hasn’t made decisions on specific roster parts.
“That’s what we’re trying to determine in putting together the playbook,” Peete said. “You go through the offense and you say, (Trestman) has been in Canada for a while and he’s had some different concepts that even though it is there, they will work here. It’s a combination of two-back, one-back, and I think that is something you have to look at.
“This day and age you have to have a combination of both. At some point in time, you’re going to have to utilize that. You formulate your playbook and even if you’re a team that doesn’t have that (pure fullback), say you are a team that doesn’t have it, you still have to get into some form of (two back) whether it is a lineman or whoever it is. Right now, we haven’t actually got into the formations and personnel. We’ve got what we call them and how we’re going to call them. Now, you’ve got to plug in the schemes and stuff to go along with that.”
Finding a good traditional fullback that doesn’t come with a lot of wear and tear isn’t easy. Fullbacks can have short shelf lives because of the wear and tear associated with being a lead blocker. The proliferation of spread offenses in the college ranks has made the position obsolete in many places. Some NFL teams have moved away from using a fullback.
“You gotta find a linebacker, you gotta find a defensive end,” Kromer said. “They don’t play them anymore. You can’t find them. You can’t even look for one in college. You just have to try to find somebody that fits the body type.”
That’s what Clutts was, a converted college defensive end. A year later, there is a good chance the Bears will seek a replacement for him. If they do, that kind of move could lead the team to keep three tight ends on the final roster instead of four.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Good bye Kellen Davis and Kyle Adams (unless he can play FB) and hello new TE and here's hoping Houston releases Clutts.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with tice wanting a more versatile fb so moving erod there made sense at the time. What didn't make sense was he was only used to block and they didn't use his versatility hence the reason why it looked like tice was way over his head and looked like a bafoon
Now trade Hester for clutts lol

You totally read my mind there Soul. I don't like that trade at all last year and blame Lovie-Tice for pushing it. If Houston releases Clutts, call his agent IMMEDIATELY. We could use him and he would come cheap. It would also shift ERod back to TE/H-back where we could use his receiving skills and speed better. I'd love to have Clutts back.

Yeah so would I. I don't believe Houston used him all that much and we did get a fair deal out of it as far as McManis was concerned but man would I love to have that guy back. He's is exactly what Kromer describes he's looking for in FB prospects.

Yeah, it always baffled me why there was no real FB being used to help open holes for the running game. Just like moving Garza to center away from his natural position as a guard. Then again we all know that the "Angler" and Lovie had no clue about offense.

Clutts was a really solid young FB. He was a solid receiver, but better than that, he was one heck of a solid 260 pound blocking fullback who runs a decent 4.7 40. He was also a long-snapper backup to Mannelly. I will always remember the one pre-season play where he was lead blocking for Bush at the goal line on the right side & just blew up a defender.......just knocked the snot out of the guy, so Bush would walk into the end zone. We sure could have used some of THAT this year. We were pathetic in short yardage & goal line situations.
I know we got something for him in trade, but I felt like we let go a solid player.
Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Beating this dead horse again, I totally agree. Yeah we got something for him (a deep backup cb and STer) but gave up a cheap and useful player cuz Tice had "no use for a FB in his system". He then proceeded to turn a TE/H-back receiver into a FB. Brilliant.
TC was a heckuva blocker, a good STer, a half-decent backfield ball catcher, and he backed up LS too. All for CHEAP. That trade was dumb dumb dumb and exemplified in a small way the offensive ineptitude of the Lovie-Tice regime last year. You could say the same thing about the way CWill and Sanz were mishandled and under-utilized.
I know all 3 were bit players and none of them were going to any pro bowls or anything, but they all were mismanaged out of whatever production that could have plausibly given us last year and going forward. If Houston does end up releasing Clutts, I'd pick him up in a New York minute and keep 3 TEs, 3 RBs, and 1 FB.

I'm sure we can pick up someone. Clutts is a 2nd string FB for the Texans, not getting much PT except for ST. Bad part about getting rid of Clutts the first time is he was probably our best blocker down by the GL. I'd agree w/Soul, Kyle Adams and Kellen must go!
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.
Restore the roar!

I think ERod takes a lot of flack for his lead blocking simply because he wasn't all we had imagined he'd be in the passing game. In reality, he improved greatly as the year went on opening lanes while being depended on greatly learning the position on the fly -- a position with a much under-appreciated and steep learning curve. He also simply did not play this H-back role we had all heard Tice wanted to utilize, and got lost in the pack of doing a yoeman's job at an unglamorous position. As for everyone's mediocre hero, Clutts. He was the thumper lead blocker at FB that we all love, but let's stop perpetuating this myth that he had any sort of coordination or body control to catch the ball or be anything but a utility blocker. In the end, he brought us a player I'm a big fan of in McManus and we replaced his role with a vastly more gifted and talented player. Ideally, you find a guy who's skillset is somewhere between the two and call it a day, but that's easier said than done. If the staff wants to move Erod to TE and find their FB, then I'm all for it because it's their system and their job to scout, coach and develop the guys they need. However, I'd be just as happy keeping Evan back there and having his athletic ability and pass catching experience developed instead of a PS lunch pail conversion player.
Now onto the the semantics of what a FB is and body-type talk.
