Let me pose this question about LT

And the Scouts Inc. have Bushrod rated 1 point lower than Webb, so if you take all of that with a grain of salt (both ratings) then it's probably not going to make a big difference in play, to have Bushrod. And, the new coach may be able to wring a bit more out of Webb too. We forget that Webb is still young (he turned 24 this year). We got him when he was greener than a gourd, rough as a cob - who had been playing for "West Texas A&M" - and he was also VERY immature as a person.

I don't think it's crazy to believe Kromer may be able to advance Webb's play to the point that he's much better than Bushrod.

I still think we should draft a LT ( to push him at the very least and maybe supplant him in a year or two ) . I don't care who plays LT .... as long as it's played "better" .

And if Webb actually gets better , then more power to em .

I don't think it's all that hard to be objective about Webb. However rated at "75" is stretching it. Did he improve this year? Yes, a few spots. One way or another we need another LT rated "75" or higher. Webb needs legitimate competition, adapt to a more complex system, and hope his football I.Q. improves. We also need a high quality ST whomever that may be.

Last season was the "make or brake" season for Webb. He had all the time, all the advantages, and Tice stuck with him through thick and thin. All I heard was "well we've got nobody else to replace him". NOW we have the opportunity to do so.

It's been a long time (outside of a qb) since I've seen such a polarizing player in Webb. I don't know hardly any other player on this roster who would get this many seasons with this much help with this much stubbornness towards making this guy work. It is not player efficient and it is not tactically efficient.

I struggle to be objective about Webb. He made me crazy angry many times over the past couple of years. But I do agree with everything you said regarding Webb.

I think Webb was one of the most raw/undeveloped players I've seen on a Bears roster. On top of all that, he was very young and immature. Not a bad kid, but it was like having a high school kid on the Bears roster. Letting a raw talent like Webb start was crazy IMHO. Letting him continue to get starting game reps for those years was crazy & painful to watch. It was a HUGE investment, and I wouldn't have done it.

I believe the reason the Bears did all of this, is that they truly felt Webb could be a really solid LT in the NFL - and the end result would be worth the pain. I'm not saying it was worth it. But if he is playing at the level that the scouts are saying, then we may NOW be in position to enjoy getting something OUT of the guy, in return for enduring his "on the job training" as our starting tackle.

We may begin to get solid dividends from the investment.

It would be just like the Bears to dump the kid, after years of painful development - and see him become one of the better LT's in the NFL - for another team.

One thing you can count on. Trestman and Kromer will not care one bit what anyone thinks of Webb. Not what Tice thought. Not what the scouts are saying. Not what the fans think.

They will be watching - and rewatching - every snap Webb played in the past couple of seasons. They HAVE to get this right, regarding the LT position. They understand that one of the foundation pieces of the offense is that LT position. One of them anyway. And they won't bet the farm on Webb - and roll the dice on him starting - unless they believe 100% that he is our best bet to go to war with this year.

They don't owe Webb anything. It's no longer Lovie being loyal to his players, and keeping a guy starting when he doesn't deserve to start.

This is a fresh, new coaching crew that doesn't give a rip about anything but winning. So, I'm going to be fine if they don't go with Webb. But I'm also going to believe he's "The Guy" if they have him starting this year, with the new regime in Chicago. They won't do that unless Webb truly has the gears to get us to the playoffs this year. Otherwise, they will bring in a different guy to build the new OL around.

I truly believe that.

So if the LT position is one of THE foundational piece of a O line then the dividends earned should be far GREATER than a vastly helped "75". If the goal is a next level deep playoff run more is both expected and needed. I would ask what position would you "invest" this much time and energy in and haven't seen a benefit? "Just one more year" is such a mantra and why use it on one of the most important positions? There are first round picks that get canned a lot faster than this. It's time to decide once and for all if Webb starts or if he's a ST.

Small incremental improvements are nice but do not take it to the next level. If this "Webb strategy" was used for more players I think many would agree it is no formula for winning football.

I guess I'm giving the new coaches a chance to evaluate it. A fresh look. They may very well think he is bench material or a bust. But if they think he is our best bet as a starter then I will watch and see how it all ends up.

Well the good thing out if this is I doubt we'll see the "Webb strategy" again especially for important positions such as LT. With Kromer and the bunch I think we'll also see some much better depth with this o line. Which was a long time coming.

Yeah, I don't think we will ever see something like that again either. Even if Webb does work out, I still think it was dumb to do what they did. Let the guy be a backup & learn. Don't hurt the team by letting him bumble around as an inept starter for a few years. It hurt the team. Only the Bears would do such a stupid thing.

On a side note, I just read that Clady is getting franchised. I gotta believe that no team will let a decent LT walk. They're almost as valuable as franchise QB's now. If you got one, you don't let them go. You pay them.

I am not by means a Webb fan, but I have to agree with the fact that a FA LT is going to cost more then it will help. But at the same time why would the Bears be interested in carry 3 RTs we have 2 good RT now. Sure some weren't happy with Carimi play but for now I am willing to put his poor play on Tice. Carimi should have never been pushed into starting at RT without having ample time in the training room to build his straight back up before starting. Even if Carimi can't get the job done Scott is still a little better then some.

This year we need to spend our time and money on finding a good Guard and Center, we might even need to find 2 Guards since we have no idea if Louis will be ready to start the season. I am hoping Emery will go after a Guard and Center in FA and draft a Guard. IMO that would bring us the most improvement in our O line and give Cutler the protection he needs as well as giving Forte the holes he needs to get the yardage we need.

The only realistic vet OT out there is Sebastian Vollmer. He's a RT but played LT for little time. Keep Webb and his salary and sign Vollmer. That would solve lot's of our problems. Right side would be rock solid with Vollmer and Louis. Let Carimi battle it out with Webb or use him as Guard or SwingOT.


objectivly, we are stuck with Webb and hope he will improve again.
