Let me pose this question about LT
I've been thinking about this a bit. Pretty much all of us have hated on Webb and with some legit reasons. But upgrading the position (this year anyway) requires signing a vet FA and that's gonna be EXPENSIVE, assuming he/they aren't retained by their original teams or go elsewhere for more money.
I think we can eliminate Long...injuries + big money
Albert...still sizable $$ and KC may not let him go if they decide to use the #1 pick elsewhere
Clady...no chance realistically
Beatty...I have no clue on that one
Bushrod...Kromer connection but is he enough better than Webb to justify the cost?
Bottom line is that we may not be able or willing to sign a FA LT which pretty much means it would be Webb again next season. Not ideal but its never an ideal world. Webb has improved a bit. Kromer + WCO + playing for a contract in his last rookie year should improve him more.
How much would you favor/disfavor saving the cap space for other stuff (including retaining our owns), keeping Webb at LT another year, and focusing on upgrading the interior OL in the early draft???

Clady will get the Tag
Albert will stay in KC
Bushrod with the money he will get <<< Webb for his money
Long is the big price and a team will throw more money on him than we can offer
The only realistic vet OT out there is Sebastian Vollmer. He's a RT but played LT for little time. Keep Webb and his salary and sign Vollmer. That would solve lot's of our problems. Right side would be rock solid with Vollmer and Louis. Let Carimi battle it out with Webb or use him as Guard or SwingOT.
objectivly, we are stuck with Webb and hope he will improve again.

I was thinking the same thing lately and I feel like our chances are getting slimmer at a big time LT FA
Still hold out hope for vollmer

Vollmer is a helluva RT no doubt. Anyone know what the chances are he hits FA? And what his cost will be if he does?
signing him pretty much means we are giving up on Carimi as starting RT. He isn't an LT or an OG. Means your 1st rounder is now basically a perpetual swing OT only. Is that a trade offyou're willing to make?

Scouts Inc. now has Webb graded out as a "Good Starter" at 75. Their grading scale has:
60-69 = Average Starter
70-79 = Good Starter
They state "He has a huge frame with good functional strength and athleticism. He has power at the point of attack as a run blocker, as well as agility, balance and good hand use in pass protection."
They have Webb rated higher than Bushrod.

The more I read and learn, the less appealing an option Bushrod appears. It looks more and more to me that we won't sign a FA LT and Webb will be the de facto starter in 2013, like it or not. That does make the cap situation much less taxing.

I'm not sure i buy into that he is a "good starter" but adding high quality LG (cooper) would likely elevate his play
The thing you must understand is that a sack is very very rarely one guys fault, just as a touchdown is
rarely one guys fault
Adding a LG may very well help Webb in a number of ways
As a tackle in pass pro, with a clean pocket (not our IOL getting blown up like last 2 years) you can attack a half of the DEs body.
What this means is if cutler has room to step up, and or we have quality blocking on the inside that will allow for one of them to keep their heads up instead of doubling a down linemn, Webb has less lanes that he must protect to keep the pressure up
Speed rushes must actually turn the corner and go thru his outside shoulder if cutler can step up, making his job that much easier
It would also let us run more than 3 man routes if we weren't assuming that we will need a double team inside, it frees up a "floater" to keep the pocket clean as long as we man up the 1&3
I think it looks more and more like Webb will be there, I'm okay with that as long as we add help on the inside to help him and the offense in general
Just seems like LT prospects are not worth the $$ or going to be tagged and or scoped up
Webb was not the meat of the problems we had, the OL is a unit and must improve as so

I don't know if any of us can be objective regarding Webb after the first two years we went through his "on the job training" to be a LT. He'll probably be hated forever because of that crash course we suffered through as fans. On top of that, he's a goofy looking guy (I know he can't help that, but it's true). He's young and says some stupid things too......I follow him on twitter along with the other Bears, and he is just a goofy, happy-go-lucky guy.
From his Twitter comments, it's clear that he feels hurt that the fans in Chicago hate him.
I re-watch the games a lot (some are painful to watch). I only focus on the oline play for the most part. I loved watching Louis play. He really has come along nicely. The injury was a killer. Especially since it was a cheap shot that took out his knee.
When you watch the games objectively, Webb clearly is much better than in past seasons. He's not great, but he handled some of the best DE's in the NFL, and for the most part held his own nicely.
But we won't ever acknowledge that. Not in Chicago. Not after the horrific games he had learning on the job. For his sake, he'd be better off going to another team, and he'd probably be a solid LT for many years to come. Of course, we'd hate him even more if THAT happened.

Someone (Soul?) posted PFF's OT rankings here somewhere recently (a source Emery acknowledges utilizing) and they ranked Bushrod only slightly ahead of Webb overall and behind him in run blocking. If accurate, that would seem to indicate that JB isn't worth the $ to sign him.
