Sorry, forgot to do my take on Te'o. He's got some serious question marks imo. I always question ND top talent; but most of the year he showed up big in big moments, it's hard for me to erase all of that b/c of the 'bama game. The 'Bama game does bring into question his ability to play against top tier talent.
Then again Ray Lewis and BU always had problem when their DL didn't keep the big guys off them also; so why should that be a knock against Te'o? I'll let the real scouts make their decision on him. If the team goes w/him or another MLB I won't be hurt anymore then them going LT or C or LG. They start going crazy and going DE TE or WR and I'll start wondering what they are doing though.
Bears going BPA based on positional needs is fine by me no matter how they go about it.

If the team does choose to go LG/C in the first I hope they trade back and get a later 1st and a 3rd out of it. Hell outside of the top 2 C prospects none of the rest of the top 5 are expected to go in the 1st two rounds; and even they(according to walter football) could go in the 3rd. Top 4 LG's are expected to go in rounds 1-3, rest should go rounds 2-6. Again I'd be okay w/trading back to pick up a 3rd if we are going to draft a LG late.
Meanwhile your top ten MLB's, almost all were 1st round picks(top10-late 1st), 1 2nd round and 1 UDFA. Reality of the situation is your best MLB's almost always come out of the early rounds, and don't last into the middle rounds, while your best G's/C's are all over the board, 1st-UDFA.
To act as if it's going either LG or C w/the first two picks is the best option is to ignore how teams draft positions. most teams will let the best interior OL'men slide to the early mid rounds more often then the best MLB's.
I dont' think anyone thinks the team is going to draft a TE or DE or anything else with either of the 1st two picks so I only centered on the MLB/LG/C. More to, and back on point, I wouldn't hate to see us take a MLB at 20. Ecspeically depending on how FA goes. If the team can take care of LT and TE and then resign BU and HM then it opens the door to go bpa all the way through the draft, which is the best way to secure needs and develop depth; both of which are needed.
The only trouble with that Ric is that it's always been pretty unlikely that we could get a vet LT in FA unless we can free up some cap space now but if NY for some reason doesn't sign Beatty I like the idea of pursuing him. A better TE in FA should be a no brainer. How could we do any worse than the way Davis played last year when he dropped nearly 30% of the passes thrown to him? Hell we should be able to do better than him for half of what he's costing us. Find another Des Clark type.
Lane Johnson has moved up the rankings since the Sr. Bowl and I don't think there's even a hope or a prayer he's there at #20 and even if he was he's still not a lock to handle LT as a rookie. Maybe yes but maybe no. If by chance Warmack is there he'll be the BPA by a long shot with Cooper not far behind. Yes you can get interior lineman farther on down in the draft but not often OGs of the caliber of guys like Hutchinson, Hannah, McDaniel, Larry Allen, etc. Looking at the player boards right now at #20 I don't see other players at positions of need who are very likely to be any better rated than the two top OGs than those two will.
Most of the others will be DEs or DTs or possibly a LB and unless we're willing to gamble on Ogletree I'm don't see anyone else who comes in that high. And drafting Ogletree with his issues would be a very un-Bearlike move.
It's really not so much that I care whether or not we take one of the OGs it's more than this year we can't afford a "reach" who doesn't fit us or a project to develop over a plug and play guy and so far those two look like the least risky bets on the board around #20. Of course all of this could change after the Combine but I'm thinking not all that much.

Soul, this is all way to early to be talking draft regardless, it's all idle speculation. top LT's/MLB's rarely make it past the 1st regardless, most the really good ones don't make it past the mid teen's. And like you said you don't want to reach. So BPA always makes the most since.
I'm all for BPA based on need positions; but what those positions are come draft is the unknown factor. If no LT is signed, and then we lose Melton/BU then are list of needs, not just wants grows expoentially and the team is really SOL. But if the team can retain BU/HM and then sign a LG/C(assuming you are correct and no LT can be signed) then the options open up greatly. The this year FA, more then most, will dictate how the team can treat the draft.

I want the Bears to follow whatever strategy that allows them the most options (meaning, utilizing FA and the draft to make sure we get Olinmen, a TE and LB), not one that says we HAVE to draft a LT in the first. If that's the best guy, fine, but it seems like the want for a better offensive line would ensure the pick of Oline no matter if that's not the best decision.

I'd rather have a LT that is an anchor for years to come, but if the Bears can't get that guy, or can sign a F/A to be that guy,
I'd gladly take Te'o at 20.

The bama game showed the real T'eo
Even when he wasn't getting stomped by jones/Warmack he was missing lacey in holes
And last I checked Lacey was good but no top 10 pick
Any T'eo hopefuls, better start hoping for him to fall to 50 and even then it wouldn't be a lock we'd take him

Well as far as Te'o is concerned all the doubts I had that about him not being THE guy to replace Urlacher were confirmed in that BCSC Game. Not only do I not want him at #20 I don't want him period.
He's this years Michael Floyd. Do you all remember when at this same time last year all of these same writers had us taking Floyd in one and Christ there was just thread and thread after thread about it.
Floyd went to AZ long before we picked be he was not our guy anyway. He certainly didn't tear it up in AZ and I doubt he'd have done much better in Chicago. As it turns out Jeffery in two was probably a far better pick.
Te'o isn't our guy. If he didn't play for ND and instead played at BC or Stanford he's be projected to go to NE or Seattle but he plays 100 miles from Chicago so naturally he should become a Bear. LMAO!
If there writers knew what the hell they were talking about then maybe the project a guy like Brown who actually has the speed and athleticism the Bears want in their LBs. Te'o is vastly over rated as a first round pick IMO.

Soul, I think it has less to do w/ND's proximity to Chicago and more to do w/the understanding the team needs a top tier MLB to replace Urlacher and that tends to be done in the early to mid 1st. If Urlacher was 5 yeas younger I doubt Te'o is even mentioned as a possibility for the Bears.
Unfortunately he's one of the top MLB's in the draft this year, and b/c of where the Bears draft he's the best MLB on the board. You cannot look at 1 game and say well that proves he cannot play. The made plays all year; and got trucked in one. One game doesn't erase a full season or career of making plays.

Just wanna say if we are judging based off of the National Championship game to decide if we need Manti, then if only getting 10 tackles for the losing team is bad, then we shouldn't look at Nico Johnson's paltry one tackle performance. We should also ignore the fact that out of these 3, only Manti has more than 1 INT (he has 7) or that he's the only one to have multiple pass deflections as well. Really, only Ogletree has him beat in any stat, and that's only in sacks, a stat that is useless for a MLB in a cover 2 defense. Now, is he going to be an all-time great? IDC, but if we can fix a few OL problems in FA, i'd be happy as hell if he became a Chicago Bear.

I see what soul is saying and I agree with him
If ND played quality teams all year then we could look at the bcs game as a "bad game" and we could look back at the entire season
Problem is not many players he played against are making it to the next level
Let's look at the players who will get drafted this year
Warmack
Jones
Lacey
Fluker
Johnson
Barkley (didn't play against nd)
I know I'm prolly missing a few mid to late round guys but the point is that bama had guys lined up who will compete for starting nfl jobs next year, and the rest of nds schedule dosent have too many guys going in rounds 1-3
We got to see what he looks like against future nfl talent and it wasn't pretty, also he skipped the sr bowl because.......
I don't really have an answer
