Te'o to the Bears articles: "Te’o is a great fit for the Bears" and...
Two articles regarding us taking Te'o:
LINK to the article Manti Te’o is a great fit for Chicago Bears
With a new regime in place, the Chicago Bears are on the verge of a complete overhaul as they attempt to turn around their recent knack for falling short of expectations.
Numerous pieces have been moving around since the end of the 2012 season, but the fate of future Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher still has yet to be decided. If the aging veteran opts to hang it up or leaves via free agency, the Bears need a replacement that can step in and be the same enforcer from Day 1. The 2013 NFL Draft would be the most likely avenue, but is there a prospect worthy of consideration?
Yes, there is: Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o.
Arguably one of the best defensive players in college football this past season, Te’o proved himself to be a phenomenal playmaker against both the run and pass. He consistently made big plays when it mattered most (besides against Alabama) and showed the instincts that NFL teams covet in linebacker prospects. Put simply, Te’o has an outstanding grasp of everything that happens on the field and would be a great fit for defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and the Bears’ Tampa-2 scheme.
While his draft stock dropped significantly following his well-publicized relationship woes, there’s still plenty to love about a player like Te’o. He may not be the brightest bulb in the box and has yet to outgrow his naivety, but the Heisman Trophy runner-up is an exceptional football player. I’m pretty sure naïve is way better than alcoholic, short-fused or self-consumed (i.e. Titus Young).
An extra positive: Te’o has a sweet bicep tattoo a la Urlacher.
The Bears have the No. 20 overall pick this upcoming April. While offensive tackle is certainly their biggest need heading into the 2013 NFL Draft, any options at the position available when the Bears are on the clock would be nothing more than reaches. And if Te’o is still on the board, Chicago would be getting a player with all of the physical tools, football IQ and leadership to lessen the pain of losing Urlacher.
When it all comes down to it, the biggest deciding factor will be whether or not the Bears think Te’o can successfully step into Urlacher’s shoes. If that’s the case, Te’o at No. 20 is a great pick. Here's the 2nd article:
LINK to the article Brian Urlacher vs Manti Te'o
NFL Free Agency starts in less than a month, then the NFL Draft six weeks after that. Lots of questions are still up in the air for General Manager Phil Emery, including what to do with his ILB position.
Brian Urlacher, one of the greatest middle linebackers to ever play the game, is currently a free agent. Last season was the final year of a 5-year contract... a contract that paid him over $40 millon.
He'll be 35 years old in May, and his body is getting worn down. He's played the position as aggressively as any of his Chicago predecessors, including Dick Butkus, and knows that his career is winding down. But he also feels like there is a little bit left in the tank, and wants to give it another round in Chicago.
New head coach Marc Trestman spoke recently on Urlacher, but didn't get into specifics on the linebacker's future in a Bears uniform. He stated that Urlacher clearly loved Chicago, but that their conversation was primarily based around Trestman gaining intel on the Bears locker room and learning about the culture and personalities of the players.
He never mentioned Urlacher's future, and conspicuously avoided answering questions about that when asked.
So what makes sense?
Many mock drafts that suggest Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o gets drafted by Chicago. Despite the weird fake girlfriend drama in recent months, and Alabama's dominating victory over Notre Dame in the National Championship game, Te'o will be drafted in the 1st round this year, and will be a day-1 starter for someone at ILB when the regular season kicks off (barring any injuries, of course)... and the Chicago Bears might be the perfect fit.
Te'o has been lauded by scouts as being more than ready for the NFL, and many even see him as being part of the next generation of linebackers with his instincts and athletic ability. His only knock is his speed, but his ability at stuffing the run is second to none.
Reality.
Unless you're in a Colts/ Andrew Luck situation, there's rarely that perfect match situation in the NFL. General Manager Phil Emery has a LOT to consider when he looks at this roster, and Marc Trestman is going to need a LOT of help getting his offense off the ground.
Former GM Jerry Angelo was able to pull off a huge trade for a franchise quarterback, something that was unheard of in recent decades in Chicago, but did very little to put supporting pieces in place to help make that QB successful. New GM Emery doesn't seem like the type to recruit an offensive-minded head coach, then ignore the personnel needs on the offensive side of the ball. Marc Trestman has said he was excited for the opportunity to surround Jay Cutler with pieces to help him succeed. So we will see.
Conclusion.
Manti Te'o might seem like the perfect replacement for Brian Urlacher, and that might very well be an option come draft day. It makes all the sense in the world on paper. But nothing in the NFL is that simple, and we might end up seeing Urlacher being given another year to play in Chicago. One thing to watch for is the timing of everything... If Urlacher is re-signed in the next few weeks, you can bet that the Bears won't be looking at Te'o when April rolls around. But if he's not re-signed, you can probably start drawing some conclusions...
Sometimes, things make perfect sense. Then there's running an NFL team.

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Guys, you do realize there is a chance we could fix enough of our O-line woes in FA, that we could afford to take a defensive player with the first and then draft some more linemen later in the draft, right? I'm just saying that depending on what we do in FA and who is available in the draft, Manti might be the best option available. No reason to be upset with that, because you know the o-line is going to be fixed somehow, some way, and not every available resource should go towards fixing the line, because it's better to get BPA than the 7th best lineman who might be available in 20 more spots.

I don't think Te'o has that high of a ceiling as a pro player... his speed that he showed in college will look average at best when playing against higher caliber players on Sundays. Also Alabama put a big mean NFL sized oline in front of him and they pushed him out of gaps all night. He might he a day one starter, but he still has a lot of developing to do and I can't see Emery gambling again on a defensive player in the first-round in a draft where he's down a pick already.
None of my posts on this forum have been aided by the use of deer-antler spray...

We have to go OL and TE ... Teo is there with our next pick ... I dunno is he worth a next pick ?
BTW ... TWO OL with our first three picks. We didnt go to a SuperBowl but FRISCO who drafted OL did.
Are they the best on the planet ? Who the fuck knows ? One thing is for goddamn sure ...
what we already have is a 10-6 team on the outside looking in.
Maybe we should start over again at OL and wipe the slate clean.

I hope Emery and co. keep on putting a smoke screen like we're going to draft Te'o. Any propaganda the league will believe is good enough for me.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.
Restore the roar!

You're not wrong at all, and it would be great to walk away from FA with an OL or two.
Good OL are extremely cost prohibitive in FA, though, and controlling Chance or Coop cheaply for years is a win-win situation considering the fact that both are going to be better than anyone out there in no time (Levitre included). I don't spend anywhere near what Levitre is going to command, and the only LTs we'll have a shot at are going to be guys like Bushrod who graded out basically the same as Webb even though he has a few more season under his belt. If we can sign a guy like Vasquez on a value deal, I would be absolutely ecstatic, but I doubt he turns out being much more cost effective than Levitre or Moore who is looking for a retirement contract. Maybe Donald Thomas or Schwartz can be had on the cheap, which would also be nice -- but with the latter I'd have to hear the parrot squad tell me he's too tall to play OG even though there are numerous guys across the league succeeding there at 6'6"+.
In the end, we also have a hugely valuable DL to retain in Melton (I don't want to call people stupid for saying we should move on because we're going to the 3-4 and he doesn't fit, but I will call them dumbasses) and that is going to drain our cap space whether or not we re-structure Peppers.
The one thing working for us is that we are a couple years from clearing an absolute ton of space, and deferring guaranteed money could even the playing field a bit.

Krony,
Lane Johnson ? Any objections ?

Every now and then a guy takes a surprising drop in the draft (we've all seen that on draft day). If for some crazy reason Te'o would be still there in the 2nd round for us, would he be worth drafting there?
Or do you think it's still a bad pick?
