Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman and GM Phil Emery took to the podium at the NFL combine today to talk about the state of the franchise. First up to talk today was Trestman who spoke about Urlacher and the progress of player and roster evaluation of the Bears.
The most intriguing quote that came from Trestman was in regards to current defensive end Shea McClellin and where he fits into the Bears defense.
''We've talked about that,'' Trestman said, ''He has flexibility. He's a tremendous athlete.
''As we put our football team together, we'll work on that. We've had discussions about Shea and all the strengths and his weaknesses. And he's got a lot of strengths and a lot of great things he can do. As Mel and the guys continue to put the defense together, we'll decide collectively what the best place for him to play is.''
What Trestman may be alluding to is a slight tweak to the way the Bears play defense in Mel Tucker's system that is different than Lovie Smith's. McClellin could play the SAM 'backer spot and play it well in a blitzing attacking and as a player in the 4-3 run defensive role.
Shea McClellin can be a 4-3 linebacker as the SAM because the run fit for the SAM is very similar to the run fit for a defensive end. The role of the SAM is take on the blocker and turn things back inside to the middle linebacker or the WILL who serves as the back side defender. What so often happens is the MIKE and WILL end up making the most tackles because the SAM is forcing the action back to them.
This means there is less pressure on the SAM to make plays, which would be ideal for McClellin. Addidtionally the Bears could also take advantage of his pass rushing skills to disguise different blitz packages between McClellin and the DE.
This type of scenario would also be beneficial to the defense as a whole because Nick Roach is a far better prospect to take over at the MIKE than McClellin is. Roach knows the defense better, knows the terminology better and has the experience playing the MIKE.
Many rookies start out playing the SAM spot because it gives them the best chance to learn the defense and their role in the NFL. This is why it's not out of the realm of possibility to see McClellin shifted to the strong-side spot.
However to adamantly destroy any thought of moving Shea to the middle linebacker spot, is still ludicrous. McCellin doesn't have the lateral movement or athleticism sideline to sideline to play th MIKE spot. He is not that type of open field tackler nor point of attack run stopper. I also don't expect him to grow into that type of role based on his skill set.
That being said there are reasons to believe that moving Shea McClellin to the SAM backer spot would in fact help the Bears in the likely event Urlacher does not return. This action would put less pressure on the Bears to immediately replace Urlacher by grabbing a middle linebacker at the 20th spot in the first round.
With the needs the Bears have on offense with needing to add more weapons and needing to rebuild the offensive line it would be far smarter to grab offensive value at 20. Taking away a major need without having to use a draft pick to fill that need is the best strategy the Bears can implement this off-season.
Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Then we can draft Ziggy Ansah!

INDIANAPOLIS -- Fans clamoring for Chicago Bears' 2012 first-round draft choice Shea McClellin to move from defensive end to linebacker had their hopes raised on Thursday when coach Marc Trestman said the club is still evaluating McClellin's role on defense.

Brian Cassella/Getty ImagesShea McClellin had 2.5 sacks as a rookie last season.
A hybrid-type player listed at 6-foot-3, 260 pounds, McClellin lined up at inside linebacker in college in Boise State's 3-4 defense, although the Bears said last year they drafted him strictly to be a pass-rushing defensive end. McClellin spent his rookie year as a situational pass rusher (2.5 sacks) but did occasionally begin a play out of a two-point stance and drop back into coverage.
"We've talked about that," Trestman said. "He has flexibility. He's a tremendous athlete. We've had discussions about Shea about all his strengths and his weaknesses, and he has a lot of strengths and a lot of great things he can do. As (Chicago Bears defensive coordinator) Mel (Tucker) and the guys continue to put the defense together, we'll decide collectively what the best place for him to play is."
Bears general manager Phil Emery later clarified that McClellin is still considered a defensive end, but he could again be asked by the coaching staff to provide different looks and wrinkles on defense.
"Right now he's a defensive end," Emery said. "He'll remain a defensive end. If there is something in him that sparks us in terms of versatility, like he did last year when he stood up in certain situations, we're not going to put an umbrella around him. We're going to use his talents, his athleticism, his speed, his savvy to the best we can.
"Whatever our coaches can concoct as far as a plan for him we'll use every ounce of it. He is a defensive end, he is a pass rusher, (and) we want to get him on the field more in regular down situations. Where his versatility is, I think that's a plus for him. So if he ends up being a linebacker in some situations, good."

Sorry, this is kind of off topic, but reading this makes me so mad. Lovie did the dumbest things at the end of last year. Went ALL OUT to win against the Vikes, ended up losing 6 spots in the draft order, and effectively shaved 3-4 good years off Urlacher's career.
And THEN he goes and drafts Shea McClellin! I'm assuming he had a significant input on this, because LORD Emery could not have been that dumb...
But I apologize, carry on...

I don't care what they do to win, as long as that is the end result. Emery hinted before, that he envisioned multiple uses for McClellan, so this comes as little surprise.

Actually, using Shea as a hybrid DE/nickel SAM-rushbacker makes a lot of sense to me. I think he could be a helluva "3 down" player in that system.

It depends on Tucker's scheme
If he uses aggressive LB play then of
Course Shea would move and most likely flourish
If we get more passive look like we have, then no hell stay as de
The first is the better option for him but must be in the right system

it depends on if we can keep Izzy or not. If Idonije goes, we need him to play DE.
Hell, I wouldn't be surprised that Izzy goes and we take a DE with our 1st again

McClellan does seem to have the talent set of an Elephant linebacker.

I agree with ya there... he also has the perfect body for it right now. About right for a OLB, but a little under mass for a four down DE yet which is. My only concern is he has been so mentally focused on rushing the quarterback ... I just wonder how well he'd adopt into possibly having to play some coverage against a TE, FB or RB when playing OLB.
Its an intriguing idea though of having him rushing off the end from a two point stance behind Peppers. It will be interesting to see what Tucker & company develop this kid into.
