Alabama Offensive Lineman Fluker Meeting With Bears Friday Night
Alabama Offensive Lineman Fluker Meeting With Bears Friday Night « CBS Chicago
(CBS) As the Bears continue to evaluate talent at the NFL Scouting Combine, the team will meet with Alabama offensive lineman D.J. Fluker on Friday night.
The 6-5, 339-pound Fluker was projected to go to the Bears with the 20th pick in the NFL Draft by draft guru Mel Kiper Jr.
Fluker met with the media Friday afternoon and said he looks forward to knocking down a defensive player “every single play.”
“Any team that wants to win a championship, any team that wants to win on every Sunday, that’s the type of team that I want to go to,”
he told the Tribune. “The team that has the attitude, ‘I will not be denied.’ The guys that want to go out there and actually work hard, actually want to do something special — win a Super Bowl, win a championship — that’s the type of team that I want to be a part of.”
Maybe we'll get our O-line addressed this spring. finally.

If he can play inside I'd put him high on the Bears draft board too. Fluker, Cooper and Warmack might be the top three inside guys come draft day but the kid also has the arm length to play OT.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

This aint college, kid. You go wherever you get drafted.

If he can play OT, grab him at 20, if not pass; one of these top G's will fall to us in the 2nd w/out question.

There are three top guards, and Fluker is one of them. The rest of the pack are far, far, far far below those three in talent, upside and performance. There is a glut second tier guys like Warfard, Aboushi, Pugh, Thomas and the like who could be there, but we need sure first-tier talent on our interior. At the same time, the two MLBs who may be at 20 are VASTLY better prospects than the OLB-to-MLB conversion guys we will be staring at in the second. Too hard to say right now which impact player at which position to grab without pick 20 on the board in front of us.

Sox, don't confuse him with facts. His mind is made up and he has all kinds of stats to back it up. Why MOST of the starting OCs and OGs in the NFL weren't first round picks!! Did you know that??? Do you think it's worth pointing out to him that since there 96 of them it would be awfully hard for that NOT to be the case.
If we decide on a LB I'm gonna hope it's in two and that guys like Minter and Brown may be there. I see good players with less risk than some of the top tier guys.

I would pass really. I think we should go with OG/OC instead of OT. The risk of getting a long term starter at OG/OC is lower than an OT.

Yeah, but Fluker could also turn into a 10 year starter. According to NFL.com, he came in the Combine 15 pounds lighter then expected, showing that he knows (and is willing) to work on his main weakness...his athleticism (needs to be quicker). If the Bears draft him and get him to an ideal weight, he could be a very solid RT, dude still has 36.75" wingspan...that is just freaky.

Sox, are these 3 guys w/out question the top talent, sure I won't argue that point, but sorry if I disagree that there are no guys that are day 1 starters outside of these the top 3 at that position. Of the top G's last in last years NFL most were got in the middle rounds. And this year is supposed to be deep w/OL talent so I see no reason why history will again not repeat itself and you'll be able to find G's that can play at a high level in those rounds also. It's like like I'm saying don't grab a top teir guy, I just disagree w/the line of seperation.
I'm cool w/Fluker if the idea is he can be a T, and if nothing else could play G, it's why I'm okay w/the resigning of Scott and letting Brown/Carimi fight out the G spot. But I'd also look to trade back to to get more picks, and then take him since no other team is expected to go T/G after the Bears; depending on how the draft looks on draft day, if more teams behind them are looking to go G/T come draft day, then I'll happily change my opinon then.
Meanwhile there are something like 10 lb's expected to go in the 1st alone. So by shear volume that tells me the better option for top talent at both need positions(T/G, and LB) is LB at 20, and G at 50. I'd rather have a top 10 LB and a top 10 LG, then a top top 3 LG and a not top 10 LB; ecspecially since top LB's(in the nfl) rarely make it out of the mid first, and top LG's(nfl) are regularly found in the mid to later rounds.
Even worse is the idea that we need to get a C in the 2nd, b/c you really can get a top 5 C in the 4th. And much like the G's, the top 10 Centers in the NFL tend to come again from the mid rounds.
