Theft of what? Grand theft auto or the equivalent of shoplifting? Big difference not that I'm defending either put it goes into the evaluation equation with much different point values.
Failed drug test for what? PEDs that could get him suspended from the NFL for a while? Cocaine or just a little cannabis sativa? Shoot he's a college student who may have forgotten that THC can stay in your system for a month or so. If teams refused to draft kids who smoked weed they'd have to let sophomores become eligible for the draft just to fill out seven rounds. Low point value on the weed.
DUI was really, really, really stupid but then aren't they all? How may guys posting here have had one or a lesser DWI. It's dumb I agree but if it's not chronic it's probably not a major character issue long term. Sox says the kid is very well respected by his team and show excellent leadership ability. Add that to his talent as a football player and weigh the points for vs against.
Remember this is Phil Emery were talking about now not Jerry Angelo. If Emery is interested in this kid there is probably not a single detail that has escaped his investigation and review. Phil probably even knows how may gold fillings the kid has and what color socks he prefers. From every thing I've seem of him so far he's that thorough and that detailed.
He says he'll have 7-10 guys ranked at the top of his board and given our need for a young stud LB I think it's almost impossible to think Ogletree isn't at least being considered. If he comes out clean as far as the probability of any future problems then he may well be one of the top two or three. He is that good.
He stole a $35 motor scooter helmet and got arrested for it (what an idiot). The guy's a J'Marcus Webb mind - but instead of just overeating junk food at McDonalds and being silly on twitter, this guy gets arrested.
He is rated as a solid LB. And frankly, if Emery spends our #1 draft pick this year on him, and he works out, then Emery will be hailed as a genius. Jerry Angelo was always swinging for the fences to look like a genius too. But the fans (me included) tired of these gambles that failed. JA piled up a ton of them over the years.
I'm just saying that IF Emery does this, he'd better get it right. And he better find a way to fix the OL too. If the LB fails, and the oline also fails, then Emery's pretty much toasted any fan good will here in Chicago. People will say he was nuts to gamble our 1st round pick on a guy who obviously couldn't keep clean off the field. They will say it was clearly a big risk. And if Emery fails to fix the OL issues - again - when he had the opportunity to bring in a 1st round stud - then Emery will be hated here.
Just like Jerry Angelo.

Well I guess I just don't see all of these issues as being all that horrible. I've never stolen anything in my life that I'm aware of but I've committed far more minor atrocities than he has. Of course I do have a few years on him, LOL.
Here's the deal. If Phil Emery was shrewd enough to have investigated BMarsh well enough to manage that risk then you can bet he'll do the same here and IF he takes him as his first round pick he'll be every bit as sure that Ogletree's problems are behind him as he was with BMarsh. JA gambled on athletes of high moral fiber turning into football players and lost as often as he won. Phil Emery takes very calculated risks with great football players who may have had past character issues. The guy is "Details Incorporated" so if Emery says he's clean then I'm gonna trust him.
I'm not advocating we draft the guy over someone else if that someone else is a better player at a position of greater need but I'm also saying that I would not scratch the kid of my list for as little as he done. The initial shit just cost him his rep and a few games of suspension. This last one could cost him far more in terms of fines and a couple of mil or more haircut on his contract. There's a big difference between being the 10th player drafted and the 20th.
Read what sox has to say about him and how his teammates think or him and his leadership abilities. He and Webb couldn't be more different in that regard. The only think Webb could lead is his fans down to Mickey D's for McRibs on him. I'm not praising the kid I'm just not gonna hang him for a couple of non-hanging offenses that's all.
If I'm the GM and his basic character checks out he's still one my board. I'm drafting MLB here not a choir director or an addiction counselor.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I think the Bears will go with Fluker in the 1st and Minter in the 2nd round. Makes the most sense, gives us options and the picks would be worth it. Value would be good.
TE Fauria or TE Toilolo with the 4th and the draft would be perfect.
At first, we need to see what happens with Melton

Melton is the wildcard here, if he walks we now need a DT, and also have some cash for FA. Could be a game changer and I think soul hit it on the head. Shouldn't eliminate this guy over what he's done so long as he interviews and tests ok.

I see your points, and many fans will be fine with the risk/reward here.
I'm not judging the guy, but am more focused on risk. Risk to the Bears. Risk to blowing that #1 draft pick. Risk scares me here, if we have other great options (and we do).
I just don't want us to risk our #1 pick like this. It's so unnecessary. There will be GREAT options for us to spend our #1 (and precious) draft pick on this year.
This guy isn't the only option here by any means.
To me, it's an unnecessary risk. I got so tired of Jerry Angelo screwing up our #1 draft picks. Why continue down that road by risking throwing away, yet another #1 pick.
This year in particular, that pick is extremely important. Let's get a GREAT player who doesn't have criminal, drug & DUI issues off the field. We don't have to DO this. I feel like Gollum on this one.
1st round draft pick = "My Precious"

In that case I'd consider trading down and consider taking Barrett Jones from Bama.

He's been my favorite player in the draft since day one, issue is his foot injury so I am holding off all judgement until we see his pro day.
He's being mocked as a mid 2nd to early third and if it stays that way we could make out big time with him in round 2. Problem is I think his stock will go back to where it was pre Injury: mid 1st to early 2nd after his pro day when his injury checks out.
Love the idea and guy though, not only is he the most decorated OL this class but he fills a leadership and take no shit role we are SERIOUSLY lacking.
We need someone to will want to bang with Kong Suh and will be a leader on the OL. Haven't had either since Olin

Agreed. I had forgoten about Jones's injury until after I made my post. I do think his stock will go back up but if push comes to shove I think we could try to find someone to trade down with to the late 1st round or early 2nd and draft Jones.
But yes I like Jones a lot.

Me too, but come his pro day he is going to have to show that his foot is 100% healed and he is operating at full steam. If he operates at 100% and puts up good numbers indicating that his foot is no longer and issue then I'm all for him. That being said I want to see him do everything well and jump up and down on the foot 100 times LOL
