LB Prospects May Also Top Bears Board...........

    Inside the Bears

Bears could strike gold in search for a linebacker

    By Mark Potash on February 23, 2013 9:48 PM|

It's not unusual for a team like the Bears to interview a prospect they have little or no chance of getting with the 20th pick of the first round of the NFL draft. But the fact that Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones -- projected to go anywhere from fifth overall to 15th in most mock drafts -- listed the Bears as one of the four teams to talk to him Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis is at least a little intriguing.

Regardless of Brian Urlacher's status for 2013, the Bears need a linebacker. And more than any other position, the possible selection of a linebacker in the first or second round would tell more about the direction the Bears are going on defense under Mel Tucker than any other position.

With Urlacher and Lance Briggs entrenched as anchors in Lovie Smith's Cover-2 defense, the Bears have been content to fill the other spot with a generic, cost-effective strongside linebacker -- Hunter Hillenmeyer, Nick Roach, Pisa Tinoisamoa. The Bears have never even been tempted to draft a young, dynamic, playmaking linebacker. And they all but gave up on the idea of drafting any linebackers since striking out with Jamar Williams (fourth round in 2006) and Michael Okwo (third-round in 2007).

That figures to change under Marc Trestman. When Tucker said, ''Right now, we're going to be a 4-3 [alignment],'' last week, the operative phrase was ''right now.'' It sure sounded like Tucker has big plans for eventual change, perhaps sooner than later. (Well let's not read more into that than was actually said. If we do change to a 3-4 we do but sooner rather than later won't be the case. IMO it would take at least a couple of years to stock a 3-4 based on who we have now)

An the place to start with big plans on defense in today's NFL is with versatile linebackers -- the best of whom seem to be either converted safeties or converted defensive ends who provide defenses with the element of surprise that seems to make the difference at the highest level.

The Bears were the polar opposite of that in Lovie Smith's Cover-2. They did what they do and it's up to opponents to figure out a way to beat it. That worked tremendously against the Rams and Cowboys and Jaguars and Panthers and Titans and Cardinals. But not against the 49ers, who tore it to the Bears to shreds with a first-time starting quarterback. And not against Aaron Rodgers, who was more than willing to take what the Bears were giving and avoid the big mistakes that Sam Bradford and Tony Romo and Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton and Matt Hasselbeck and Ryan Lindley could not.

Briggs is still one of the best linebackers in the NFL. But he's a dinosaur as a linebacker who is primarily a tackling machine. That he had one of his best seasons in 2012 and did not make the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2004 in favor of three pass-rushing linebackers with a combined 44 sacks (Aldon Smith, DeMarcus Ware and Clay Matthews) was an injustice, but perhaps also a signal that there is a new standard for defensive prowess in the NFL. (Well let's be honest here. Kaepernick, Wilson and Rodgers tore up a lot of very good defenses including the Ravens D so that's not all that damning of the Bears. AND if we had an offense who could execute anything else better than 3 and outs we may have actually kept our defense from getting worn down in a few of those games.)

We'll know in April if the Bears' new coaching staff already has gotten that message. Regardless of whether they get the next Aldon Smith, Brian Urlacher or Lance Briggs, they need something. With that in mind, here are some of the more intriguing possibilities if the Bears decide to upgrade their linebacker corps:

Jarvis Jones, 6-3, 240, Georgia -- a superior athlete with great one-on-one skills, he thrived as a pass rusher in Georgia's 3-4 defense but also is suited for a 4-3. He has a medical issue -- he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis as a freshman at USC and was barred from playing football for health reasons. But he got the OK at Georgia and played two standout seasons without incident.

''I think I bring versatility to the team,'' Jones said. ''I can play Sam linebacker. I can play Will linebacker. I can play 4-3. I can play a 3-4. I'm just gonna get after you. I'm gonna get after the QB every play.''

Alec Ogletree, 6-3, 235, Georgia -- Scouts agree he has superstar potential as an athletic inside linebacker with great coverage ability. He played safety as a freshman.

The character issue might be the only thing that drops him far enough in the first round for the Bears to have a shot. Ogletree was suspended four games in 2012 for failing a drug test. He added a DUI arrest two weeks ago to an already checkered past. But he sounded contrite and like a changed man in his media interview at the Combine on Saturday.

''I'm a good person at heart,'' Ogletree said. ''Everybody makes mistakes. I feel real bad about the situation. I'm learning from it and I'm moving forward. Ogletree has the athleticism to combat the mobility of quarterbacks like Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson.

''I think that's a big part of my game,'' Ogletree said. ''I like to play sideline to sideline. I try to use my speed to my advantage. When I can strike somebody, I do that.''

Manti Te'o, 6-1, 248, Notre Dame -- Not a show-stopper, but his versatility, instincts and range give him a chance to excel at any linebacker position. The character flaw exposed by the girlfriend hoax episode is unlikely to be an issue for NFL teams. His performance against Alabama in the National Championship Game is a bigger issue. Te'o was unprepared to face Alabama's speed and aggressiveness, but he learns well and figures to adjust better when he faces it on a regular basis in the NFL.

''I think what I bring to the table is a lot of heart, a lot of energy and somebody that works hard. Somebody who hates to lose,'' Te'o said. ''I always say, 'I hate losing more than I love to win.' The reason why I love to win is because I don't have to go through that feeling of losing. It's those times where I lose that feeling that will stick with me.

''I tell [NFL teams], 'You'll always get somebody who's humble, works hard, doesn't say much and will do everything it takes to win.'''

Other possibilities include Kevin Minter (6-2, 240), LSU; Dion Jordan (6-6, 239), Oregon; Khaseem Greene (6-1, 230), Rutgers; Arthur Brown (6-1, 224), Kansas State; and Kevin Riddick (6-2, 246), North Carolina.

As badly as we need guys like Cooper or Warmack or maybe as an outside prospect even Fluker IF one of the top two LBs (Te'o is NOT included here) was on the board at #20 I can't say that I would fault Emery if he went that way PROVIDED he, Trestman and Tucker knew they could start the guy at SLB because we let Roach go in FA.

The Bears defense always functions best when it has impact players at LB. HOWEVER my caveat here is that we have had some success taking LBs after the first round in Singletary and Briggs but it's also hard to argue with the bunch we have in the '80s, Wilson, Marshall, and Al Harris all who were 1st round picks. Replacing Urlacher won't be easy but a kid like Ogletree has those same kind of skills and if, like Marshall, he's truly turned a corner as far as his lousy judgement is concerned and had that "come to Jesus" vision I don't think you can rule him out. This latest problem in combination with the others may be just enough to drop him as far as #20. Jones I don't think will drop that far.

If we don't do that way in one then there are a couple of guys in two who may be worth a shot. Minter is more the true MLB type who has some of Urlacher's type of skills and Brown, although on the small side, may be a good pickup as a SLB or eventually a WLB after Briggs hangs it up. I'd truly be more in favor of waiting on the LB pick because I just can't rank it as more important than a good interior lineman but I could also understand that if Ogletree is truly one of those once in a decade kind of guy as a MLB he'd be hard to pass up.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

It will be very interesting to see how this unfolds. We sure will miss not having that 3rd round draft pick. It's a killer not having it this year.

If we go LB in the first, then we could get an average OG in the 2nd, and an average C in the 4th. Nothing special, maybe better than what we have now on the OL. Maybe.

I do know that Emery failed to fix the OL his first year year. Didn't even take a swing at fixing it. But he was given a "honeymoon" pass, and fans let Lovie & company be the fall guys (and probably rightfully so). But if Emery fails again, or even takes a half-hearted swing at truly fixing the OL - again - then his honeymoon will turn to him being hated by the fans........especially if we don't even get over the 10-win bar that got Lovie fired. Fans can forgive him for not making the playoffs, again - if they see he's serious about fixing the OL. If he pisses this opportunity away, with a fat draft class at OL, then he's out on a ledge. The fans will be hating him for pulling a Jerry Angelo on us.

I don't see this as a great LB class, but I don't claim to know squat. Maybe these top guys are better than they seem to me. But honestly, I just see a "Chris Williams" situation, only at LB, if we go LB in this year's first round. A first round pick spent on a less than great player. The OL guards, on the other hand, look like absolute game changing studs to me. They were saying yesterday that Cooper may have hall of fame level talent. Obviously, nobody can say that with any certainty (it's a joke really) but there is no denying there's some awesome talent this year at interior line positions.

If cooper and Warmack were gone I would understand olgetree

I wouldn't like it, ESP with his behavior issues, I'd favor a trade down to gather more picks and then see what it was looking like, but I would understand the selection

    Olgetree only, Te'o absolutely not

I think this all depends on FA and how the draft unfolds. Just to much can happen, all sorts of scenerios could lead the team to taking a top OL/MLB/DT(if the Bears lose Melton), or drop back later into the draft to get extra picks and take someone likely to go in the early 2nd.

FA is going to tell us so much more about their plans then anything we can guess right now. But LB is a need in the next 2 years; and impact MLB's are not typically found outside of the 1st....although I doubt we are able to get a player like BU anytime soon.

Probably not, and FA is going to unveil or reroute alot of their draft strategy.

I think the LB situation is somewhat like OG/OC. There are two blue chip guys and guys like Fluker and Te'o who I see has half red and half blue. Late first round picks in all probability who could do well if they end up with the right team and not so well if they don't.

There have to be some question marks surrounding those guys that require caution. Is Fluker that good or did his playing on that line really help more than some think. That's the difference between and "impact player" and just a good football player. That "impact player" is gonna be a great player no matter who he plays for or with. A good football player isn't a "game changer" and needs as supporting cast around him.

I don't question much of anything about Te'o except that I don't feel he's the right guy for the Bears defense. Baltimore would be a good fit for him and I think he could be a very good player there but in Chicago I don't think he's the fit. I believe I'd rate Minter higher for us than Te'o but who knows what Emery thinks. I think this kid Brown from K State might be a nice 2nd round pick too. He's a little small for an ILB right now but then so was Singletary when we took him and from what I've read and watched in a couple of videos that kid is capable of being all over the field. He can cover, he can tackle and he's tough to block.

I'm beginning to believe Cooper's stock may climb so high that he'll never fall to #20 so we may end up with another at the top of our board at #20 and maybe it is Ogletree and we look other OGs in two. There are still gonna be some good football players just not an impact guy like Cooper.

I may be wrong but the only core position problem I'm seeing that can and should be resolved in FA is TE. There's a pretty good supply who are due to become FAs and somewhere in there is the upgrade we need. It doesn't need to be a Jermichael Finley. A younger Des Clark will do nicely.

I think most of the LTs either get re-signed or the price will be too steep. Same thing at OG. How can you justify giving a guy like Levitre a $36 mil deal with almost $16 mil guaranteed like Ben Grubbs got last year when there a good chance you can get a better player in the draft for about $10 mil total?

What I'm seeing it that Emery is beginning to look around and find that some of his own FAs are better players than some of the other FAs he expects to see. I think his comments about wanting to bring back Jonathan Scott as a swing tackle pretty much indicate that he's not going after a vet starter for LT in FA. If Scott returns Webb is gonna be it with Scott as his competition and I can't say that given the likely selection and their price tags that may be the only way to go this year.

Other than that I can see him picking up some bargains in the second phase like he did well with last years but I really don't know that other than a TE we're gonna see him as a big time player at the gun. JMHO.

Here's Emery's dilemma. Ogletree in 24 months has rolled up being arrested for theft, DUI & a has a 2012 failed drug test.

    So.

If Emery would pass up an OL pick & give up our #1 pick to this guy - and he'd self-destruct, can you imagine the heat he'd take? It would be one heck of a gamble for Emery. Not talent wise, but given the history of failure with the perennial OL woes taking out our seasons here in Chicago. And Emery knows that the previous GM is hated for his draft gambles that failed - especially first round gambles that failed.

I don't know if he'd want to risk so much on a guy like Ogletree. Maybe he will though. It will be interesting. I can't wait to see this draft unfold.

Yeah I can but I also would need to look more carefully at the actual offenses and the severity.

Theft of what? Grand theft auto or the equivalent of shoplifting? Big difference not that I'm defending either put it goes into the evaluation equation with much different point values.

Failed drug test for what? PEDs that could get him suspended from the NFL for a while? Cocaine or just a little cannabis sativa? Shoot he's a college student who may have forgotten that THC can stay in your system for a month or so. If teams refused to draft kids who smoked weed they'd have to let sophomores become eligible for the draft just to fill out seven rounds. Low point value on the weed.

DUI was really, really, really stupid but then aren't they all? How may guys posting here have had one or a lesser DWI. It's dumb I agree but if it's not chronic it's probably not a major character issue long term. Sox says the kid is very well respected by his team and show excellent leadership ability. Add that to his talent as a football player and weigh the points for vs against.

Remember this is Phil Emery were talking about now not Jerry Angelo. If Emery is interested in this kid there is probably not a single detail that has escaped his investigation and review. Phil probably even knows how may gold fillings the kid has and what color socks he prefers. From every thing I've seem of him so far he's that thorough and that detailed.

He says he'll have 7-10 guys ranked at the top of his board and given our need for a young stud LB I think it's almost impossible to think Ogletree isn't at least being considered. If he comes out clean as far as the probability of any future problems then he may well be one of the top two or three. He is that good.
