melton has to be re-signed or franchise tagged...he's the priority for this off-season...he's still not as good as he's going to be, either, in my opinion...
not for the price he will command, also I don't think he will be at the same level seeing how the cover 2 will be a back burner

Zach was on the SCORE this afternoon and reiterated that he doesnt think the bears will tag him this year.
they only have 10mil under the cap and that doesnt count rookies. They simply have too many needs to tie up another guy for big money. It may also be that tuck wants to run the 2 gap and get some big ol DT's. Perhaps they sign a FA DT like Sammie Hill or Randy Starks and a OG like Levitre or Vasquez for the same cap hit as Melton.

If he's not tagged, who is? Not using a tag is foolish.

These 2 tackles just got released by the Eagles for cap space. They both look like 2 GAP tackles. Comments?
Actually Jenkins looks like a good 2 GAP and he may get scooped up very quickly.

Seems Melton will be our cap casualty this year....a lot of teams are having this issue....gonna have even more from Dallas in the next few days since they are over the cap and want to resign Romo to an extension.
Might well work out in our favor to let Melton walk, grab another cheaper option, get 2 or 3 O players we need(G, T, TE, C) then draft as necessary. The G's and TE's tend to come cheap. Maybe you can grab 2 of those and still have room to take a fatty DT like Tuck likes? 2-3 solid players for the price of 1 sounds okay by me. Also you have to remember next year we'll have to resign Cutler if all goes well.

Maybe I'm naive and will end up eating crow on this one, but I don't believe any of this bs. I'll be shocked (and eating crow) if Melton isn't either re-signed soon or FT'd and re-signed later like Forte was last year. He's young, still has more upside, was developed here, and is vital to the system on D. You just don't let a young star DT like that go especially a homegrown talent like he is. Shit, cutting Davis, Spaeth, and Hester nets nearly as much new cap room as Melton's FT would require and all 3 of them combined aren't as important. That doesn't even take into account what can be done with extensions and restructurings. I don't believe for a minute that HM is going anywhere. If no long term deal is imminent, then use the damn tag...this is the exact situation it was meant for.

I say it since the season is over now... Melton may be to pricey for us to keep him. We have many other needs that need the money. The D will still be good without Melton. Hell we don't even know how much Peppers had an influence on his great game. Would want to know how he does without JP.
I'd rather spend the money on a LT like Albert or Long.
There are lots of DTs available for less money. IIRC, just like Trestman/Kromer likes bigger OGs than usual, Trestman likes to have bigger DTs to control the LoS with strenght. This would open holes for our LBs like Briggs or if Shea plays as SLB, Shea. If we draft a guy like Minter or Ogletree, they would be usefull for the Blitz too.
Trestman has a history of going big with the D and O Line. He wants control of the LoS. They can say what they want, but I think we will end up with a pretty normal 4-3 that uses all strategies that if can use. It won't be that Tampa 2 that we had for years. If will have more Cover 3s (it already did)

This isn't a smart move IMO. We shouldn't be jettisoning our young stars especially on dline. I don't think he is as good as people think cause he gets to play next to peppers but he is still a young star. And on dline you don't just let that walk. You jettison older players before you mess with the youth on the team that is how you stay relevant. Won't be popular but free up the money from Tillman before you dump Melton
Unless the plan is moving away from 43 or even just wanting bigger dt then that's a whole other story

Hopefully with a few restructured contracts, and trimming some dead weight players from the roster, we'll have plenty of money to sign Melton.
