A different perspective on the draft

With all the speculation regarding just who the Bears should draft with their early picks this year the one variable that has NOT been mentioned is the results of the "Wonderlic" test and the second test. I believe that I.Q. and Football I.Q may be almost as important as physical ability. Emery is known for being VERY thorough when doing his research on players so the results of these tests may weigh heavily when it comes time to take one player over another in the draft. Too bad we won't know the test results but I, for one won't be surprised if he drafts someone that is not at the top of "OUR" list. Maybe a "O" lineman that we would want doesn't grade well and he passes on him for another option with more smarts at the same position or even another position. I would love to know just how the "McTaco Eater" scored. ;-) I'd like to hear your thoughts on the issue so have at it.

That's a great point. I figure it's just a "fun thing" for fans to dream about. But you're right. We don't know a lot of things behind the scenes that Emery is privy to. I think most of us here trust that Emery knows what he's doing. I do, until he proves otherwise I'm 100% trusting the guy.

O-linemen seem to have a higher wonderlic score nowadays and that is reasonable to figure considering the calls, complexity and combinations. I do believe that there is a difference between a wonderlic and football I.Q. Football I.Q. seems a more reflexive/intuitive sense of knowing what to do along with a percentage of muscle memory. Even w/a great wonderlic score it's hard sometimes to transfer that knowledge over to the field vs. football I.Q.

I remember posting an article about a qb from Alabama a few season ago I believe who scored a perfect on it. It scared some writers as they believed coaches would be wary of someone with that sort of intelligence.

I also think that there could be another category. Something akin to football I.Q like a situational awareness test or metric to see how a player scores in a particular situation or football related stress event in game.

Agreed and that's why I had both I.Q. and Football I.Q. IMO BOTH are essential.

Wonderlic scores are typically kept secret, unless they are way too low or very high, then they get "leaked." But yes, this is why they arent mentioned, because we dont know them. But, you can rest assured that Emery and the Bears staff know the scores and they will take them into consideration along with the other factors.

The Wonderlic is as much a crapshoot as the draft. You need talent to combine with intellect.

Eli Manning scored a 39 on the Wonderlic.

Tom Brady scored a 33.

Roethlisberger scored a 25.

Orton got a 25 as well.

Jay Culter got a 26 but Matt Leinart got a 35.

The Bears, not too long ago, drafted a quarterback who scored a 38 on the Wonderlic, has a degree in molecular genetics and a GPA of 3.75
