I am very skeptical of a FA signing here. Multiple reasons why. You overpay for what you get, there's a shorter lifespan, and we might not have the cap space anyway. This is a stopgap only, if it happens at all.

The following is predicated on Emery doing his due diligence medically just like he successfully did mentally on Marshall this time last year. And him clearing the necessary hurdles. If so, and if he falls to 50 (which is looking realistically possible at this point), it would be freakin' stupid to pass on Barrett Jones in the 2nd.

Konz started at C the 2nd half of his rookie year and Jones is considered better than Konz. Wisniewski started from the get-go at LG (winning a rookie-of the week award in week 3) and then successfully moved to C. Jones can play G too if need be then move to the middle. Value? Konz was drafted in the late-2nd and Wiz was drafted in the mid-2nd. Hardly unprecedented. Yeah, a franchise center for the next decade is worth a mid-2nd pick, especially when all we have is garbage or backup quality only there now.

Maybe just maybe if there's a LB there at 50 Emery really really likes I pass, but otherwise this would be a no brainer IMHO.
And that is potentially what we could get in Jones so long as hes healthy, and his value doesnt go thru the ceiling (I dont expect him to be available at 50)

Frederick or that kid from Cal may be options in the 4th as well

I think some people are misundestanding what I am saying, nobody will just give a 2nd rd pick or later the job. Cooper/Warmack either for that matter. But i expect they win the job either in TC or later and if they do, if they are our best option then yes 2 rookies starting may happen. It is by no stretch of the imagination desireable, but JA really, really screwed us on this. We didn't help ourselves with DeCastro last year, or any OL for that matter so this could be what we are left with. Maybe Garza finds the fountian of youth and can get it done this year. I hope that's the case as I like the guy and hes been a Bear forever, but the realist in me says that just wont happen. He will be a year older and I just dont see it this year for him. Sucks but it's just what may have to happen. New blood up front may not be a horrible thing either.....

Wait, Konz played C his rookie year? I thought he replaced the RG, and McClure stayed at center. I don't pay much attention to the Falcons. Maybe I'm wrong.

Wisniewski I know played guard his first year, and was moved to center his second year. Which is partially my point. I do not expect a rookie to start at center if the intention is to remain competitive. We aren't the Browns or the Bills here with nothing to lose. My real point has been the whole two rookie starting thing, which I have beaten to death.

FWIW, I think the injury/missing-the-Combine thing is going to prove way too overblown for Jones. He played on it for cripes sake--well I might add--and got it fixed immediately after the BCS game so very likely a youg guy like him will be good to go easily by August. I don't think he will last till 50 either (prob high 2nd) but if he does, I'd take him in a heartbeat (medically cleared of course).

From what I read on NFP, Frederick had a very poor Combine showing both in drills and measurables. He doesn't sound all that special. The Cal guy Schwenke may be a realistic option to consider as well.

I'll re-check that and I could be wrong, maybe he played G. Or some of both. Jones is considered from everything I've read to be a superior prospect at this point to Konz so consider that as well.
