People are acting like we have no cap space.
We are in the top 10 in cap space in the NFL.
When we cut Hester, Spaeth and Davis we will have 20 million dollars in cap space.
We have money.
The real question is do we re-sign Melton or do we sign a free agent OT?

The Giants had 6 million in cap space after their cuts and they just signed a guy to a 5 year 37.5 million dollar deal.
We don't have the cap space to FRANCHISE Melton and to go crazy in free agency

the only reason not to keep melton imo is philosophy change whether it is eventually switching to a 34 or some DC want bigger DTs. other then that man losing a young star on defense really makes me sick. At the least franchise him and see if someone trades for him.
-
one more thing we are on the brink of a disaster on defense with cause of age in key areas-Peppers, Urlacher, Briggs, Tillman, Jennings...........Melton will just add to that. We should be able to fit Melton and get OL help as long as we dont spend cap space foolishly on backups and special teams.

Phil Emery was brought in to build through the draft.
I doubt he allows a 26 year old Pro Bowl DT walk so he can go crazy in free agency.
The Bears can pretty easily get 25 million in cap space.

If we don't want to pay him we have more than enough cap room to franchise and trade him.
Melton to the Broncos for OT Orlando Franklin and 2[60]

I realize this is probably a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. Can you franchise a guy and then trade him?
Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

I think he would have to sign his tender and then you can trade him. He's only going to do that if he already as an informal agreement with some other club. I dont know of many teams who are going to give him the big bucks and a good draft pick.

This is correct.
But any team that trades for him won't do it till they have a deal with him.
It happens all the time.
Losing a 26 year old Pro Bowler at a key position to sign some over priced free agents would be criminal.
Sign your stars and build through the draft.

So WindyCity,
How are things going over on *************.com ?
You may have noticed I cant type in a "rival" board.
Damn shame ... we'd take that board over in a minute.
