I doubt he allows a 26 year old Pro Bowl DT walk so he can go crazy in free agency.
The Bears can pretty easily get 25 million in cap space.
Melton is a one hit wonder, I don't know why and many wont agree but he's fit for a lovie scheme not a true 4-3. We neglected jay for 4 years its about time to protect him

You may have noticed I cant type in a "rival" board.
Damn shame ... we'd take that board over in a minute.
Since CBMB closed it has been a lawless wilderness.
But they unblocked this site at work with our new Internet provider so all is good.

That is what draft picks and well priced free agents are for.
Rome was not built in a day and our OL won't be dominant in 1 offseason.
Melton is not a 1 year wonder he is ranked in the top 5 of everyone free agent rankings.

I do think we should consider tagging Melton and letting him talk to other teams to get a deal done. Trade him for a pick we badly need and all is good for Melton, the Bears and the team that gets him.

That would be crazy. He's at least a top ten DT and maybe a top five and we have no way to replace him. What's 670, The Score? Weren't they the ones who misreported the severity of Webb's pot bust too? Yep, they're all full of good info and ideas. Are you sure that station isn't owned by Packer fans?
If we let Melton go then we'd be in a position of having to draft a pass rushing DT this year instead of an OLineman so why do that? Since we have a very young set of DTs and a couple of young DEs it might be nice if we finally spent some higher picks on the other line.

We are in the top 10 in cap space in the NFL.
When we cut Hester, Spaeth and Davis we will have 20 million dollars in cap space.
We have money.
The real question is do we re-sign Melton or do we sign a free agent OT?
That's simple. You re-sign Melton. He's twice the player and twice the force that any FA OT would be. This past year was only his second year starting at DT and he's only 26. Guys like him don't come along all that often.
The last time we had a DT who could penetrate and bring the pressure he does was when Tommie Harris was in his prime and we went to a SB. Melton is that same type of player.
He's worth the cost of the tag and a contract that will average around $8 mil per year and that still would make him anywhere near the highest paid DT in the NFL. Guys like Ngata and Dorsey make around $10 mil per year.
Pep does not make Melton a better player but Melton made both Izzy and Wootton more effective this past year. Those are the guys he plays next to not Pep. We lacked an inside pass rush and pressure for years until Melton stepped into that 3t spot and one of the reasons we got the picks we got this year was that pressure. It would be crazy to give that up.
Paea and Collins are both good DTs but they aren't even close to the talent level of Melton. I don't know that there's another DT in the NFL who played both the run and the pass as effectively as Melton did last year. Pay the man and he'll be the centerpiece of that DLine for the next four or five years.
So what if he costs us $8 mil a year. We aren't paying Urlacher that kind of money any longer and as far as that defense goes Melton is the new Urlacher. We're actually not spending more money on him that could be used elsewhere we're just shifting that $8 mil a year nut to a different player.

Soul I am with you, letting Melton walk just to sign a free agent OT is the absolute wrong way to go about business.

I also agree cut Hester Speath and Davis....bam 6 of 8 required mil to tag/sign him

If it comes down to fixing the O line or resigning Melton, all I can say is good bye Mr Melton. But I think unless Melton is asking for the moon that both can be done if done right, by cutting some players and redoing a couple contracts.
