Moves by other teams that might affect the Bears' offseason
I was looking up Jason Witten's contract situation, when I saw that he and several other Cowboys had their contracts restructed, so that a resigning of Romo would result in them becoming under the salary cap. Seeing how they have switched to a 4-3 defense, that would allow them to pursue arguably the best lineman in FA, Henry Melton.
Also saw that the 49ers are NOT trading for Revis. This gives the Bears a better chance of trading down (for those that didn't see the thread, the closest the points would be to working would be trading our first and second(the second one they have) for their first, second and both 3rd round picks). I'm really hoping such a deal could go down.

Halpert, I know you want Emery to sign Dustin Keller and I'm okay with that, too. ;-)
But here's another "big name" TE who's on his way out.

Ramses Barden, Martellus Bennett out with Giants?
Free-agent tight end Martellus Bennett doesn't expect to be back with the New York Giants next season, and he isn't the only pass-catcher anticipating a new home.
Nestled behind Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks on the depth chart, wide receiver Ramses Barden believes a change of scenery will lead to new opportunities.
"I'm really kind of excited for the offseason, because as much fun as I've had in New York -- yeah, I was comfortable there -- it's probably best for me to start looking in other places for a new system, a refreshed sense of welcoming," Barden told SiriusXM NFL Radio, according to The Star-Ledger. "I think everybody can benefit from newness in their lives at a certain time, and this is going to be one of those for me."
Bennett was less diplomatic on Twitter this week, writing, "I've come to the conclusion that we are just temporary investments to the owners," and "they have other priorities that come before little ole me. I'm just a small piece of what they're trying to do there."
The Giants' passing game was uneven for stretches last season as quarterback Eli Manning struggled to get on the same page with his wideouts.
Losing Bennett (55 catches in 2012) would strip the team of its second-leading receiver from a season ago. Barden was less of a factor, pulling down 14 catches for 220 yards, not exactly big numbers from a guy who was expected to step up his game.
Domenik Hixon saw more playing time than Barden in three-receiver sets, but he's also about to become a free agent, leaving the Giants with holes to fill at the position if the open market lures the trio away. He was a bust in Dallas but he's shown versatility and great hands in NYC. Plus he's got great size. Both Keller or Bennett would be HUGE upgrades over Davis.

Good news.
Buffalo Bills place franchise tag on safety Jarius Byrd, means LG Andy Levitre is set to hit free agency.

Nobody expected Miami to bring Long back. Not at what he's asking. I think one of 2 things will happen with Long:
1. Some crazy team will overpay for him, and be laughed at later (like the Haynesworth thing).
or
2. Long will find out nobody wants him at anything approaching his asking price (not even the crazy teams will pay). He will be humbled, and take a MUCH lower contract that is incentive based.

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Crazy out of the box left field idea that totally hinges on who we cut and re-structure. Do we:
1. Go after Albert if KC places the FT on Bowe? This means we can possibly pick up one of the 2 stellar LG's with our number 20 pick.
2. Go after Levitre from Buffalo and try to trade up to be in the 11-13 range to have a shot at Lane Johnson? Our first this year and next year's second definitely do it.
Thoughts?

I would definitely want the Bears to sign him if he is willing to accept an incentive based contract. I just don't want the Bears to pay him $10 million a year if he isn't healthy/wasn't as good as he used to be.

I like going after Albert. He is a perfect fit for our team. He would "solve" our LT problem for the next several years. He's a "real" LT with real talent. He grades out as a MUCH better LT than a has-been like Long. I don't care how cheap Long ends up being. He's no longer any good. He is injury prone. He's a guy on the way down.
Why not get a stud who is rock solid NOW, and who will only get better?
Now THAT is money well-spent. Build our oline around the rock solid foundation of a guy like Albert.

I think we need as many draft picks as possible, so I guess it wouldn't be wise to move up. We have too many holes to fill and only five picks. We traded our 3rd round pick to Miami for Marshall and the 7th round pick to Tampa for DT Brian Price who's no longer on the team.
- Get a LT in free agency (IF the price is right) and a tight end
- Draft LG, C, LB
EDIT: We'll have to wait and see how much $ Albert wants per season.

In FA we need to go after a clear starting upgrade on the OL (if affordable of course). I agree that Levitre and Albert look like the best candidates and I'd be stoked with either of them. I don't see how we trade up that far (or at all) in the draft though with our pick/need situation. If we don't sign an OT in FA, then Webb is the starting LT next year almost for certain. Maybe we draft a guy to groom for a year or two but Webb will be the starter like it or not.
I'm in favor of signing Albert if feasible. That's money (and yes it will be pricey) well spent. We get a young top notch LT and that moves Webb over to compete at RT with Carimi. Loser becomes swing. You essentially upgrade two positions with one player and have a solid backup too. And you save the $700k you would have had to use to re-sign Scott for depth. He's a goner with 3 bettertackles + Brown on the roster. The interior OL could be then be addressed in the draft which happens to be deep with talent there.
