Melton Tagged
I thought for the next 75 hours this deserved its own thread.
@vxmcclure23: Bears and Henry Melton still ``on opposite ends of the world'' on a new deal. So, seems like the franchise tag ($8.45 mil) is expected.
Vaughn mcclure @vxmcclure23
Henry Melton just told me the Bears slapped the franchise tag on him.

"Henry Melton negotiations start at $18.59 million guaranteed
Barring a last-minute uptick in negotiations, the Bears will use the franchise tag on Pro Bowl defensive tackle Henry Melton by the Monday afternoon deadline.
By doing so, the Bears give themselves until mid-July to work out a long-term deal, as they did a year ago with Pro Bowl running back Matt Forte."

I've seen where melton thinks he's the best DT in the NFL. He's only 26 and on the upswing, it wouldnt surprise me if he's asking for something like 6/60mil, 20-25 guarantees

@mikecwright: Henry Melton's people haven't heard from the Bears, but they're definitely expecting the team to use the tag.

How is the cap effected if he signs after being tagged?
Does the tag money continue or does it wipe out and his first year of contract money start?

Odd as it seems, NFL players get paid weekly during the season, with their last paycheck of the year coming in 2 weeks after the end of the season. So regardless if a player gets tagged or not, they will not see that money until the preseason, and since they have til July to work out a deal, then it wont really matter cap-wise since it will essentially "wipe out" those F-tag numbers, and replace it with his Contract numbers.
I'm trying//to let go//of maybe//but maybe's just so//very interesting//Oh, what a thing.

I dont give a fuck about Meltons goofy money ... he's not going to get that anywhere if he walks.
Stick with DAA BEARRSSE going to the SuperBowl.
Lets realize that Frisco has an obscene amount of draft picks ... it looks like N.E. all over again.
This is where Emery and Trestman have to step up and show who we are.
With only six picks they better be bonifide ... no stupid ST picks over and over that "may" develop.
Everybody on this board knows what we need.

Glad you agree ... the dude is a DL player that came on. He's worth money but dont let us get crazy before F.A.

Good move, needed to happen and the thought the Bears would let a 26 year old Pro Bowler leave was always crazy.
Bears have 4.5 million in cap space right now.
