Yes, it will be a buyers’ market again in the NFL. This is what allowed the Bears to bring back DL Israel Idonije on a modest $2.5 million, one-year contract last season. It will likely put him in a similar position again this year. The Atlanta Falcons cut three big name players in Michael Turner, John Abraham and Dunta Robinson. It’s happening around the league as teams look to get younger and cheaper. That puts veterans that are 30 and over in a tough position. It is why players coming out of their first contract and looking for a second contract – like Bears DT Henry Melton – need to maximize their opportunity. Big pays days in the form of third contracts are rare in the NFL. Earning power is greatly decreased after age 30. Players need to strike young and older players must face reality that they will not have a lot of leverage.
