sign Geoff Schwartz - OG
Heres a guy PFF likes and should come at a reasonable price, maybe 2-3mil cap hit. He's a big dude too - 6-6, 340. Not the glamour name but he could be a good value and give Emery some flexibility in the draft.
This is the PFF review.
3. Geoff Schwartz
2012 Grade: +5.8
2012 Snaps: 160
Summary: We called for Schwartz to receive more playing time all season as he was stuck in a one-sided platoon with guard Brandon Fusco. Schwartz played at least 10 snaps in eight different games, though 36 was his season high and he rarely saw the field for more than a short cameo. Fusco, on the other hand, started all 16 games while posting a -11.9 overall grade including a -13.6 in pass protection. Schwartz outplayed him in all facets ó he surrendered only four pressures on his 84 pass blocks, while posting a +5.1 grade on his 75 snaps as a run blocker.
Schwartz will now have a chance to find full-time work as he heads to free agency. He has more than just this seasonís small sample size to work off, as his last starting gig was in 2010 when he graded at +19.3 at both right guard and right tackle for the Carolina Panthers. Itís a safe bet that Schwartz will be on the field for more than 160 snaps in 2013.
He would be a solid signing if the price is right.
He'd be a GREAT signing. He's young too. A guy who could help us on that interior line. I don't believe we can fix the OL significantly unless we put some serious resources into it this year - beyond just adding a couple of draft picks. I believe we are delusional, if we think the draft alone can fix the OL woes this year. It can't and it won't.
Emery - if he's serious about fixing the OL - needs to spend some serious money in FA on quality OL players. Of course we can "hope" that Carimi, Webb, Garza, Louis comes back 100% from his injury (rather than being like Carimi was this past year) and toss in some old pixie dust that Tice may have left at HH - and count it "all good" and walk away. But there is no magic here. Either we put some serious effort and resources into fixing the OL - or we do that same crap we've done under Lovie and Angelo.
There is no free lunch here.
Said this a while ago. I still remember the ass-whopping Izzy put on his when he was playing tackle, but he's played well at OG. Don't be surprised when someone pops in to says he's just too tall to play guard.

sounds like the angelo approach to the o-line...bargain shop in free agency and then pick whoever everyone else passed on in the draft...
if emery is going to spend money on the o-line in FA, he needs to get a legitimate, proven starter...not a guy who only played 160 snaps...schwartz would be a nice pick-up after we get an actual tackle or guard, but the bears can do better...get long or bushrod or vollmer or levitre and i'm fine with schwartz...
