Notre Dame had an easy schedule. Te'o got run over and was a non-factor in the BCS Championship Game against Bama. Shows that he didn't play against any competition that could expose him. He gets eaten alive by teams with good offensive lines, his combine stats are mediocre at best and he's got childish character issues. And yet people consider him the best LB in the draft which he's clearly not. At #50 maybe, but definitely not first round material. Apparently, I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Just because he's a "big name" doesn't mean he's that good.

Look up Te'o's stats and compare them to Jarvis Jones and you'll see who's really a first round linebacker. ;-)

Some years it's just a poor draft for some positions. I know you guys won't agree with me here, but I believe THIS year is a downer for LB's. It would be like the Chris Williams year where we spent a 1st round pick when the OT talent wasn't so hot that year.

On the other hand, I can't remember a year with this much OL talent. I am amazed by the depth of quality talent. Even at LT. Terron Armstead would be a steal in the 2nd round if he'd fall to us. I believe this guy will be an annual All-Pro for years to come. Obviously not his first season, but just watch, he may be the best of the LT prospects - in the long run. The guy will be amazing.

The LB's look like very average guys who will have very average careers. Te'o included. He's a hyped up mediocre talent, from a school that has over-hyped athletes out the wazzoo. I've watched this (as a ND fan) for over 50 years now. He's a 3rd round talent being hyped as a great LB.

I don't buy it. Hope the Bears don't buy in either.

I just don see a GM hiring someone to turn around the offense and then drafting a MLB when our TE and OL suck.

People keep saying ND had a soft shedule, but it rated out at 6th according to this site, and less then 3points less then Alabama's.

and before the season it was rated 1st. How is that weak? They showed up small in the biggest game, but they went into 2 games late in the season where people said they could not win and they did. The final game shows how much work recruiting they really need to do before they can compete w/the top team(another 2-3 years worth)...but that is not to say that they are completely devoid of talent, ecspecially for the NFL level

I view him as the LB equivalent of LT Chris Williams. I would be sick if we spent our 1st round pick on him. He's going to be ~ a Nick Roach talent. Solid, but not spectacular. And we need to do better with our 1st round pick. No more Jerry Angelo type first round picks.

how do you know that Te'o will end up like that and a guy like Cooper won't? Maybe Cooper ends up as Chris Williams and Te'o as Brian Urlacher?

talk like this is stupid, really. We all will know this in 2-3 years, not now. How many busts have been in the past that were considered can't miss prospects?

Hes a decent fit in the NFL as a 3-4 ILB but he doesn't appear to have the speed or range to be a true 4-3 MLB with coverage responsibilities. He was totally over-hyped, in typical ND fashion, as a top-10 pick and then got exposed badly in the BCS game and the Combine. We would be total fools to take him at 20. Pass

Maybe I'm too much of a pessimist regarding Te'o not being worth a 1st round pick. But I have a lot of memories of ND players that I loved watching in college, who were very disappointing in the NFL. Here's a few of them. Older fans will remember the old timers here, and younger fans will remember the more recent ND players:

In no particular order:

Brady Quinn - First round, can't miss QB. He's thrown a grand total of 12 touchdowns in his career - and 17 picks).

Rick Mirer - He was so exciting at ND, and scored more points than any previous player in Notre Dame history (3 bowl games too). 1st round 2nd overall pick of the draft. Another bust.

Derek Brown (1st round, 14th overall pick as a TE....another one of those "can't miss" ND players. He had 1 TD in his NFL career)

John Huarte (won the Heisman, but has a QB rating of 22 in the NFL.....Only threw 1 touchdown in his career)

Steve Niehaus - on defense (dline) this guy was even more hyped than Te'o. Can't miss they said. Awesome at ND, and more exciting to watch than Te'o. 1st round, 2nd overall pick. Bust.


Walt Patulski - It's hard to believe but this guy was even better than Niehaus (dline too). He was a DE who was in the running for the Heisman Trophy. He was so exciting to watch (much more exciting than Te'o even). He was drafted #1 overall. First player taken. Bust.

Terry Hanratty (I loved watching him lead ND to a national championship. He was a career backup in the NFL)

Irv Smith - Some of you will remember him as the "can't miss" TE from ND. Incredible college career. Drafted 1st round. Bust TE.

Tony Hunter - 12th overall pick as a WR. A "can't miss" receiver from ND. 1st round, 12th overall pick of the draft. Busted. Had a grand total of 15 catches for his NFL career. 15. Kind of a WR version of Te'o. As a ND fan, you just knew he was going to be a hall of famer, if ever there was one.

Kevin Hardy (one of my favorite ND players. I loved watching this guy. He was a bust at the NFL level). My most exciting game as a boy, was the day my father took me to see Kevin Hardy at ND. My dad was a crazy ND fan (so of course I was too). I idolized Hevin Hardy as a player at ND. He was, IMHO, 100 times the player Te'o was at ND. He was drafted 12th overall in the 1st round. He never started a single game in the NFL and was a bust.

Tom Carter - he played for the Bears for a few years. He wasn't a total bust at all. Just an -for a 1st round CB. He stuck around the NFL for a number of years (before and after the Bears). I think Te'o may be most like this guy. Not a bust. But not a star either. Certainly not a major factor at the NFL level.

Jim Seymour (Seymour was an awesome WR to watch. He was Hanratty's favorite target in winning a national championship). We (Bears) drafted him 10th overall in the 1st round. Another "can't miss" guy from Notre Dame. I absolutely loved watching him at ND. He was incredible. But he fizzled with the Bears and ended up as an arena football player.

Notre Dame has been a media darling as long as I can remember, and their players often get more hype than they often deserve. I think that's why a lot of these guys, like Te'o, get folks thinking they are MUCH better than they really are. That's my 2-cents worth anyway. And often they just can't live up to the hype.

These are just some of my ND disappointments in over-hyped players. For you guys who have followed ND football over the years (and their over hyped players) feel free to add to this "list of memories".......
