According to SI's Peter King, several teams are "scared" of free agent RT Andre Smith.
Per King, teams "fear what a big signing bonus would do to (Smith's) desire." The No. 6 pick of the 2009 draft struggled with weight and injury issues his first two years in the league, and didn't put it all together until he was playing for a new contract. Smith was perhaps the league's most dominant right tackle in 2013, but his past will be a ghost in negotiations.
He wants $9 million per season. Man, I can't see spending that kind of money on a RT. Even if he didn't have weight issues. I'd rather spend the money on a LT like Albert who could solve our LT problems for years to come. A guy who would be a good foundation, that we could build our new oline around.
I'm not sure we even NEED a RT. We'd have Webb and Carimi who could do just fine there. Carimi will be fine now that he's healthy. Webb would be a real stud at RT.
He'd scare me away too. Red flag for sure. Emery & Stein will do what's needed to get the right players without "reaching" for someone who may or may not work out.
If he is looking to make $9 million, he must be sharing Webb's bong. I don't think any RT will make $9 mil a year until the salary cap is well over $200 million
You know if some of these guys had majored in finance while they were in college instead of advanced egomania then maybe they'd get agents who were more realistic about their worth and what teams will pay.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
