Not having that 3rd round pick hurts. I guess this is a reality check for fans as to just how important (vitally important) it is to not miss with those top draft picks. Those advocating "taking a chance" on long shot character issue players are not thinking this through. We simply CANNOT MISS with these two top picks. Can't pull a Jerry Angelo here or we're really hurting the team.

Santa is going to leave 2 high round picks under our tree. Maybe an upper/middle-tier FA in our stocking & some dirt cheap training camp fodder guys too.

That's probably "it" for this year.

We'll have 4 lower round picks that could have "development" worthy players for the future. Other than that, it looks like we have to dance with the Webb guy another year & Carimi.

I think windy is right and jabf is dead on...we miss on those top 2 picks and we could be in some trouble

Big,big test for emery and Trestman..but this is why emery is here and I trust him

So we're just taking stabs in the dark right now. We look at the existing OL players and think most if not all of them are not very good. The new coaches, however, may feel like Tice didn't know his butt from a hole in the ground and mismanaged his talent. Same could be true all over the team.

Sure, they'll see players that need to go, and be replaced. But we really don't have a clue (as fans) as to who is good and who THEY think should go. Wouldn't it be wild if they look at a guy like K.Davis, and believe he's part of their plan moving forward? Not because of what he did with Tice in charge, but maybe THEY see him as a real talent to be developed. What if they feel like Hester was mishandled, and actually could be a weapon for us? I know it sounds crazy, but in some cases it could be true.

I don't know what to think. I'm just watching the Emery/Trestman parade go by. By the end of the parade I hope we're all ecstatic, happy campers.

Why do I have visions of Dunlap being little more than an over sized Frank Omiyale or another Jared Gaither? He's only started 19 games in his entire 52 game career so we have even less of a history on him than we do on Webb! And it's kind of hard to buy into his 12 starts ranking him all that much higher than Webb in his 16 starts. I just don't see that value of this guy with a deal that averages $3.5 mil per year. Right now Webb is a much cheaper alternative.

I'll tell you how I'd run this. The best available FA LTs are pricey and there are more than a few questions marks surrounding each. I'd stick with Webb and the upswing we saw in his play last year and hope he continues to mature. The basics of what you want in a LT are there and he's still only 24 years old. I'd put the onus on a combination of Kromer's coaching and Trestman's offensive adjustments to more of a WCO to be enough to see if this year he finally gets to an acceptable level and plays more consistently from game to game.

Then I'd look for low cost OT prospects in FA and in the draft. Guys who may have the body type and athleticism to be coachable prospects. Guys who Kromer may be able to work with to get them able to play either OT spot at a starting NFL level. Guys who can challenge every single OT on that roster including Webb and Carimi and Scott too if we do re-sign him.

On draft day I'd do my damnedest to get a Warmack or a Cooper with that #20 pick. I don't care how those guys rank overall right now interior lineman almost never go that high and I think there's a very good chance one or both might still be on the board at #20. DeCastro ranked as high last year as these guys do this year and he lasted until the 23rd pick. With one of those two you fill the LG spot for a decade with a potential future All Pro OG, provide help for both Webb and Garza (or whoever plays OC) and you stabilize what I believe is the absolute weakest position on the OLine.

Now, there's two counter strategies here. In the unlikely event that a guy like Lane Johnson actually falls to #20 then you have to decide whether he's the better pick if either or both of the LGs are there as well. This is pretty damn unlikely although I do believe at least one of the three will be there. The other side of this is what if none of those three are still on the board at #20? Then you have to go with your BPA guy either there or we trade down if we can get him lower than #20.

Who are the fall back guys. As of right now probably: OL; Fluker, TE; Eifert, LB; Ogletree. But these are strictly Plan B guys. The highest need is without question on the OLine at LG first or at LT if you find a guy who you are absolutely certain could come in and start for you this year and do a better job than Webb. And that's the decision you have to make if there's good LT there. It's either that or a LG I'm convinced of that. We have to start building that line from the draft. There is no other affordable way to do it.

Having done that in one if I'm in the Bears war room I'm gonna pray like hell that a good LB prospect falls to me in two or at least close enough that I can trade up a few picks for him if need be. Those are my priorities right now, pre-FA, and in that order.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

The issue I see is some way shape or form we need someone to play RT.

Dickerson and Michael C Wright have reported that Carimi is closer to getting cut then he is to starting for the Bears. This leaves a huge gaping hole at RT that needs to be filled. Relying on Carimi and Scott when your QB is in a contract year and you need to make a 100 million dollar decision is just way to big a risk for me.

I see that we have 2 options,

    1. Sign or Draft a LT and move Webb to RT, I do not see many ways one of the LTs fall to us in the draft so signing might be the way that we go.

    2. Sign or Draft a RT and leave Webb at LT, I see a number of RTs in free agency that would stabilize the position but money could be the issue.

In some way shape or form we need a starting OT to play alongside J`Marcus Webb and for the record I am absolutely fine with Webb playing LT, but he was really hurt last season by the turnstyle at RT and poor LG play.

Makes sense, Soul. I'm bummed that Beatty was re-signed and Albert was tagged. Thought we had a shot at one of them. So what does that leave us with in terms of FA LTs? Not much. Bushrod, who's not an economical upgrade over Webb and Long, who's injured and prolly too expensive anyway. Bottom line is, no LT in FA and Webb is very likely our starter at LT this year.

I think all we are looking at right now in FA is a TE and/or an OG. Could we get Fasano + Schwartz? I say this because Cook is going to cost well more than a typical TE (which is why he wasn't tagged) and there's a distinct possibility that neither Cooper or Warmack make it to 20 with this draft being so weak on top QBs. If one of them do make it, then take him at 20 no questions asked. But I'm scheming about the possibility of it not happening.

Gotta trade down with SF in this case if possible. We can't chance Teo or Ogletree or Eifert at 20 and Emery would have a lynch mob at his HH office if he doesn't upgrade the OL in the 1st pick IMO. Trading 20 for 31 nets a third + a 5th and trading down both our 1st and 2nd nets two additional 3rds (4 picks in the first 100) approximately. Seems smart to me in this case. In this case take...

1st/31: Barrett Jones, C for the next decade
    2nd/61: bpa LB
    3rd/74: OT prospect
    3rd/94: TE prospect
    4th: WR/KR/PR
    5th-6th: bpas, CB, OG, etc.

I'd rather get Cooper at 20 but it may not happen...
