yeah, why are people discussing free agency on a discussion forum about the bears?

everyone just stop thinking about potential free agents until the team announces they've made cuts or restructures! what's the point otherwise? and the draft? why even talk about it? i mean who knows who gets picked before us?

All we heard last year was how much room we had to steal away guys like Garcon while the Skins and Cowboys would be in utter cap hell. Well, we signed a guy named Jack Shit while the Skins and Cowboys went on spending sprees. The NFL cap is hugely manipulable and we see proof of it every single year. Remember how awful and off a guy named DB's numbers were in spite of his supposed "genius cap understanding?" Well, the reason for that is we lay fans demand concrete information on even the most fluid of situations, so the media gives us the hard numbers to satisfy us and we live by those numbers since they are from a reliable source. Problem is, there's these guys called capologists on every NFL team manipulating the numbers every year, changing the landscape entirely and yet we still put our palms at the sky when teams like the Skins and Girls spend out their ass every single season.

It's more that you are missing the point. JJ is right.

We have dreams about Cook, Levitre or Long here but couldn't even pay to get Keller or even keep our own Free Agents

If he can play at 310-315lbs then yeah he's a guy we should look at but I still don't believe he'll go before round three and that's where we're stoned right now. Hell I love Badger lineman so it's not like I'm not pulling for him but he's not the quickest or most athletic specimen around.

One reason I'm pulling for us to take Cooper is that he's a guy who may shift to OC and in reality that may be his best position. That kid is lightening quick and can block in the second level better than any other interior lineman on the board.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I think we are all pulling for Cooper but theres a big question if he'll be there. He's consistently graded in the 10-15 range, higer than Decastro was last year. Now we know OG's slide, heck maybe even fluker gets drafted before him you dont know. Fluker has a consistent top 20 grade now too and might not make it until 20. Garza is basically done and they need a replacement there just as bad as any other position. If Frederick maintains his mid 50 ranking and Mayock still ranks him as his top center, then IMO, I'd rather have him be the next OC than take time with a project 4th/5th rounder.

there are numerous ways to increase the amount of cap space the bears have...so for you to suggest that people should stop talking about free agents is both simplistic and wrong...

bottom line, the bears can find ways around the cap if they want to, and that's why people are talking about free agents...if you are for some reason unable to discuss realistically hypothetical situations then i can only assume you've missed the point of a message board entirely...

Right now the Bears have enough money to sign there Draft picks and that is it. they still need to clear enough money to sign there own FA. The big question is just how much money can they clear and when will they do it. Some are saying it won't happen until way after FA starts. You can't count on cuts being the answer since we have to fill every player we cut with his replacement and some of them will cost far more then we are paying the players we have now. Some people think it only takes a call or two to players and we will have all the money we need it doesn't happen like that it take weeks even months to rework deals, of course we can cut some of our big play players but we still end up with a big CAP hit so for most part that won't work either.

I don't think we will have the coin to sign any top FAs but a TE and some tier 2 guys is not out of the question

There are ways around the cap, teams do it every year

I don't think FA will bring any big splashes...although I'm sure we could free up enough money for Long if we REALLY wanted to...it's just not worth the consequences it would be in the future.

A few "oh hey, cool" pickups but no front page news IMO
