LB's 2013 Mock Offseason Thread
Mock Offseason Vol. 1
I believe that if we restructure some contracts (Marshall, Tillman, Jennings) and cut a few obvious players (Hester, Davis, Unga) we would be able to sign two free agents without breaking the bank.
Re-sign:
- LB Brian Urlacher
- DE Israel Idonije
- DT Nate Collins
- RB Armando Allen
- OG Lance Louis
- CB Zackary Bowman
- CB Kelvin Hayden (if price is right)
- OT Jonathan Scott (if price is right)
Free Agency:
- LG Andy Levitre (Buffalo Bills)
- TE Jared Cook (Tennessee Titans)
Draft:
*Trade* The Chicago Bears trade 1[20] to San Francisco for 1[31] and 2[63].
1[31] The Chicago Bears select OT Terron Armstead, Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Some people might consider this pick a reach. Joeckel, Fisher and Johnson will be long gone and we don't have the money to sign Jake Long or any other free agent LT. Shockingly athletic and having established that he can play with anyone, Armstead might be the best offensive tackle no one is talking about, yet.
2[52] The Chicago Bears select C Barrett Jones, Alabama.
He's the best C in the draft and can play multiple positions. Could be our starting C for the next decade. Jones is typically characterized as a try-hard player who gets by with excellent fundamentals, and it is true that he uses his hands and feet very well to consistently defeat his opponent.
2[63] The Chicago Bears select LB Nico Johnson, Alabama.
Physically imposing defender with good overall musculature and weight distribution. Has a thick lower body which aids in his anchoring against blockers. Seems to enjoy the physical nature of the game, aggressively taking on and shedding blockers at the point of attack. Appears most comfortable inside, showing the ability to make subtle side-steps to slip into gaps and meet backs at the line. Forceful hitter whose core strength is obvious as he grabs, twists and pulls ball-carriers to the ground. Gives a strong jolt to potential pass-catchers to knock them off of their routes and shows some initial flexibility and quickness to run with them. Hasn't missed a game over his career due to injury.
4[116] The Chicago Bears select WR Chris Harper, Kansas State.
Harper is a coordinated athlete with above average body control and focus, tracking the ball beautifully and snatching it out of the air with his reliable hands. Harper isn't overly explosive and is more of a one-speed player, but has been improving each game as a route runner and is an effective perimeter blocker with a strong core for the position. While not a track star, Harper has good-enough football speed and is one of the more underrated receivers for the 2013 class.
5[148] The Chicago Bears select QB Matt Scott, Arizona.
Very good accuracy, velocity on slant routes. Shows good touch to loft passes between defenders and down the sideline. Good ball placement. Consistently hits his receivers in stride, providing them the opportunity to gain yardage after the catch. Tough. Returned from the big hit that caused a concussion (Utah) and played through it. Willing to stare down the barrel and take the big hit to complete the throw. Selfless teammate who took a redshirt in 2011 to return as Arizona's starter once Foles left.
6[180] The Chicago Bears select FB Braden Wilson, Kansas State.
Kromer wants a traditional Fullback in the new offense. A bruising FB who is a hard-nosed player and one of the toughest players in the Big 12. Viewed as one of the top fullbacks in the nation as he ranks third at the position among draft-eligible players by NFL.com.

I doubt we will be able to afford Levitre and Cook. In this case give my Cook at a reduced price and I will draft one of the elite OGs in this class.
Terron Armstead in the 1st is a risk, I am not saying it is a terrible move, but the guy has a long way to go to be an NFL starter.

Nico Johnson in the 2nd Round? please no... guy isn't worth it. I would start to think about him with the 4th.

Looks solid, and I like the trade idea/restructures
Does that top pick turn into an OG if we can't sign lev?

Mock Offseason Vol. 2
TE Martellus Bennett
OT Jermon Bushrod
DT Nate Collins
RB Armando Allen
--------
Now let's hope Emery will be able to restructure Tillman's contract. Maybe he can even trade or cut Hester and convince Peppers to take a pay cut so we can save some money. Let's just wait and see what happens next.
Re-sign:
- LB Brian Urlacher
- OG Lance Louis
- DE Israel Idonije (if price is right)
Free Agency:
If Hayden doesn't come back we'll need someone to play NB.
- Sign CB Captain Munnerlyn (Carolina Panthers) if the price is right or try to bring back Zack Bowman. Munnerlyn is undersized but also a hard-working nickelback/special teamer.
Draft:
This time I'm gonna use the same "trade-down" scenario as Windy.
*Trade* The Chicago Bears trade 1[20] [850 points] to the San Francisco 49ers for 2[34] and 3[74] and 3[93] [910 points]. The 49ers have 14 picks and they cannot use them all and they can be aggressive in moving up.
2[34] The Chicago Bears select LB Alec Ogletree, Georgia.*
A former safety, Ogletree showed off his terrific range and athleticism, making plays all over the field in 2012 and was often the best player on a defense loaded with NFL talent. Terrific quickness around the edge, capable of making stops in the backfield and is fast in pursuit. Doesn't shy from making the big hit. Arrives with deceiving power and violent intentions. Lengthy frame, athleticism and experience in coverage. Has the long arms scouts like from linebackers. Excellent special teams player whose ball skills were demonstrated when he leapt high to snatch an onside kick early against LSU in the SEC Championship game.
2[50] The Chicago Bears select C Barrett Jones, Alabama.
He's the best C in the draft and can play multiple positions. Could be our starting C for the next decade. Jones is typically characterized as a try-hard player who gets by with excellent fundamentals, and it is true that he uses his hands and feet very well to consistently defeat his opponent.
3[74] The Chicago Bears select OG Justin Pugh, Syracuse.
Experienced player who started every game he played over three seasons. Effortless mover for a 290-pound tackle with good body control and coordination to take on blocks and mirror rushers in space. Good combination of speed and athleticism enables him to reach the second level as fast as any offensive lineman in this class. High ceiling. He is an intriguing prospect, but it became more evident at the Senior Bowl that his best position is probably inside at guard.
3[93] The Chicago Bears select DT Akeem Spence, Illinois.
Spence is a physical tackler and powerful hitter, showing good range and mobility for an interior lineman. He has good awareness to find the run lane and halt ballcarriers. Spence isn't much of a pass rusher at this point (3.5 career sacks), but has good experience, starting every game for Illinois the past three seasons (38 starts). Like Chicago Bears DT Stephen Paea, Spence is a strong, stout run defender who has room to grow as a pass rusher.
4[116] The Chicago Bears select WR Tavarres King, Georgia.
Demonstrates great lateral agility, acceleration and generally reliable hands. Shows the stop-start-go elusiveness to consistently make defenders miss and enough straight-line speed to beat them over the top. His fluidity during drills at the Senior Bowl was also impressive, as he showed the foot quickness and balance to chop his feet and turn quickly. He was also the best on his squad at getting off press coverage.
5[148] The Chicago Bears select LB Lerentee McCray, Florida.
Athletic looking frame with thick lower half, and long, muscular arms. Exhibits good top-end speed and acceleration in space. Displays strong punch and ability to generate a bull rush when he establishes low position/leverage. Will spread out and cover the slot from time to time, and possesses fluid backpedal in space. Possesses active hands on contact and flashes good use of long arms to swim back inside as a rusher. Plays with some physicality and is tough to push back at the line. Persistent worker on the field who plays with energy and aggression. Hasn't seemed to drop off in quickness or speed throughout his college career despite a substantial weight and muscle.

I'd find a way to get Matt Scott, but perfect draft, IMO.

Most C's don't get picked that high, most are picked after the 2nd, but Jones my be the special exception to that rule....regardless we'll be able to get a quality C in the 2nd at that spot, even if it's not Jones.
