Melton Is A Key To Bears Future Success.............

Henry Melton critical to Chicago Bears' future success

By Ryan Wooden, Tuesday at 1:25 pm

With the franchise tag temporarily taking care of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Henry Melton's future as a Chicago Bear, Phil Emery and the rest of the front office are setting their sights on the free agent market and next month's NFL Draft. However, while the tag does guarantee we'll see No. 69 in navy blue next season, it prolongs the inevitable conversation of Melton's long-term future with the franchise, and that should worry you as a Chicago Bears fan.

It worries the hell out of me.

Unlike last season, when Matt Forte's contract proved to be a headache leading all the way into camp, don't expect the 26 year-old Melton to take issue with collecting an $8.45 million salary in 2013, even coming off of a career year. However, with Henry Melton making a name for himself as one of the NFL's most disruptive three-technique's it'd be nice if the Bears could lock in a deal with the pillar of their interior before that price continues to rise.

In some regards you can understand the general skepticism. Melton did slow toward the end of last season after a blistering start where he racked up 4.5 sacks in his first five games, and ideally you'd like to see how he fits into new defensive coordinator Mel Tucker's system. But, as long as the Bears are in the 4-3, you simply can't allow a premium three-technique to slip through the cracks.

Melton was a project coming out of college as a former running back at the University of Texas who grew into a defensive tackle's body, but now he's become one of the best interior pass rushers in the League. He gives the Bears’ defense push in the 'B' gap, which goes a long way toward deepening drops and allowing guys like Julius Peppers and Corey Wootton to take more direct routes to the quarterback.

At this point, Melton is clearly in the upper echelon of interior defensive lineman in professional football, and that certainly justifies the franchise tag. However, if you have the opportunity to extend a productive 26 year-old, AND you can potentially lower his cap number while doing so, you have to do it.

I certainly understand why Emery's focuses are elsewhere. This franchise is in limbo—trying to both rebuild and sustain their current success—so the NFL Draft and Free Agency present more pressing issues at the moment. However, I hope the conversation circles back around to Henry Melton sooner than later.

Melton's value is paramount not only for all the reasons I've already mentioned, but with the core of the Chicago Bears’ defense aging quickly, Melton is a potential cornerstone of this unit moving forward. Along with Wootton and Shea McClellin and Stephen Paea, these guys have an opportunity to anchor a new era of Bears’ defense as we see Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs go by the wayside in coming years.

As the Bears move into that next phase and away from the Urlacher/Briggs era, the young talent on the defensive line should be a strength. But, that all starts with Melton in my eyes, and that's why it's critical for Emery and Marc Trestman to re-sign him as quickly as possible.

Henry Melton may be overshadowed at times by names like Urlacher, Peppers, Briggs and Tillman right now, but he's an essential part of the Chicago Bears' future success.

This is well thought out and well written. Our LBs have been a big part of our defensive success for years but with both Urlacher and Briggs nearing the end of their careers and no promise of being able to replace them in kind we need to be looking at the youth in the DLine to lead in coming years. We have four guys with great potential but Melton is without a doubt the bell cow up front. He's the guy we need the most and he won't be a bargain to sign either. Nonetheless we do need to sign him long term and get that tag monkey off our backs. That should save us around $4 mil or so in cap space alone.

Melton will seek to better Harris' deal

The Bears are on the hook for $8.45 million for Henry Melton in 2013 unless a long-term contract can be constructed in the next 41/2 months. Melton is seeking a multi-year deal and the Bears would prefer to have the 26-year-old Pro Bowl performer secured into the future. Finding common ground is the challenge for the two sides.

The team has been down a similar path before with a player at the same position, signing Tommie Harris to a four-year contract extension in June 2008 after he had been named to three Pro Bowls. That was five years ago and one key difference is Harris was still under contract to the team as he was preparing to enter the final year of his rookie contract when he was extended.

The Harris deal was for four years and included $37.965 million in new money with $10 million fully guaranteed. The total excludes an escalator (worth $1.0575 million) for the final year of the deal in 2012 that required him to be named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in the same season the team won the Super Bowl. Harris didn't achieve those lofty goals and was released two years ago.

Harris' deal wasn't all it seemed because of a de-escalating roster bonus in 2012 (one he obviously didn't get) that was worth a maximum of $8 million. Functionally, that was only a $2 million roster bonus because it decreased each year he did not participate in 74.5 percent of the defensive snaps and reach the Pro Bowl. Harris only reached 74.5 percent of snaps once in his career before the second contract and before knee issues created durability issues.

If Harris had finished his contract with the Bears, it would have been a $31.965 million, four-year deal – meaning he would have averaged nearly $8 million per season. That's quite a difference from the $40 million, four-year extension that originally was revealed.

The top defensive tackles are shooting for $10 million averages now. For Melton, it's going to be important to increase the guaranteed money in his contract substantially over what Harris received. In a four-year contract running back Matt Forte received last July before the deadline for franchise-tagged players, he received $17.1 million guaranteed.

Melton likely would be pleased with a deal that averaged $10 million per season. But it's all in how the numbers add up because sometimes a $10 million average isn't really all that. There is no urgency for Melton to have a deal in place quickly, although the Bears would benefit from a multi-year contract that potentially would reduce his cap number and ensure his services for future seasons.

Here is how the Harris deal broke down:

2008 $6.5 million signing bonus $3.5 million roster bonus $605,000 base salary

2009 $6.67 million roster bonus $500,000 workout bonus $620,000 base salary

2010 $2.5 million roster bonus $500,000 workout bonus $1.235 million base salary

2011 $2.5 million roster bonus $500,000 workout bonus $2,312,500 million base salary

2012 $8 million de-escalating roster bonus $500,000 workout bonus $2.5 million base salary

The DL is always the key to a successful 4-3 and melton is certainly a big part of it. We could be seeing a young line of Wooten/Melton/Paea/Shea as early as 2014. I just hope Emery was right on his projection of Shea being an every down RDE because the 19th overall pick is supposed to be that.

The Bears can tag him again in 2014 so we have a ton of leverage.

    5 years 42.5 million/21 guaranteed

That gives him an 8.5 average and 2.5x franchise tag guaranteed.

    That seems fair?

that would be fair and more than enough money for him to accept it.

I think Melton is not the key, he started off great but in the last like 7 games became a ghost on the field. I think were gonna over pay him when we can have a similar player for a lot less. Personally I think this one will bit us in the ass later and he will be playing with lovie in Dallas in 2014
