How does it make sense for the Chiefs to keep Albert and draft Joeckel? They will have two pretty highly-paid LT. Do they keep Albert for one year only? Which one would play RT? I don't get how that makes sense. How is it cheaper for them? Joeckel will likely make more than Winston this year. If they wanted to save money, they would have not tagged Albert.

-The 1st overall pick is not highly paid he makes about 5 million a season, he makes what Winston makes so the money is pretty much even.
-Now they will have to LTs on their roster and they are a passing team.
The Chiefs have to take Joeckel there is no one else in the draft worth #1 and they chose to keep Albert over Winston. It makes sense since Winston is not as good as Albert.
Winston has consistently been a top 5 RT in the NFL, he was cut in Houston because they were capped screwed and in KC because they have to pick OT in the draft.

In the 3rd year he gave us very average play.

Right. Albert is better than Winston, but he is also much more expensive. It doesn't look like these moves would save the Chiefs any money, as he said.
Also, what are the thoughts on Winston moving to LT? Is it thought he could or couldn't play there? Has he ever played on that side in the NFL?

I'd be talking to him. Right now any peice of the Oline that we can secure gives us that much more flexibility in the draft.

This is a passing league and guarding your edges is at a premium. Releasing Winston now and replacing him with a rookie gives them MONTHS with freed up space to make moves around in FA and the like, including re-signing Albert long term. Joeckel doesn't have to be signed until damn near August, and that time makes all the difference in roster and cap flexibility to improve their team. They tagged Albert because he is a valuable commodity at a premium position, you rarely see those guys walk. Now, with the saved money from cutting Winston, they have a heck of a lot more room moving forward to sign him. Winston was scheduled to make $6.5M each of the next three season and will be 30 this season. Joeckel, as the first overall pick playing OT will make something in the ballpark of Kalil's contract which is ~$5M per average and <$4M as a 22 year old stud rookie.

Sox, if Emery decided to pursue Winston (and that would be a worthwhile thing to consider IMHO), what do you think would be a reasonable and realistic price tag to sign him?

You'll never see me guess contracts. I find it all to be ludicrous shit-tossing to see what sticks. I suspect he is looking for the same deal he just got released from, though.

Lol, if he was worth the same deal he had he probably wouldn't have been released. Most FAs think they're going to get more than the actually do. He's not Mario Williams or Peyton Manning. And this is shaping up like a buyers market in FA with few teams having tons of cap space to burn. I don't think for a second that Jake Long is going to get $10 million or that Finley/Cook are going to get 7. Reality intervenes. No way Winston gets $6.5
