That 4-years $22M (actually $5.5 per if you want to prorate it as you have) he got last year isn't ludicrous for a top 10 RT on the open market, and the market dictates value. There's actually a few good RTs on this market which may drive down his value a bit, but I would wager to say he gets somewhere close to the same deal.

That's the answers I'm looking for. I'm not at all familiar with the guy so I asked. If he's a guy who can be had for a good price and contribute at a much higher level than a guy like Scott ever could then I can see the benefit.

Two things still concern me though. One is spending much $$$ on a RT when we still have an unproven former 1st round pick who hasn't been fully evaluated playing there. And two is that no matter what you all think I don't believe Carimi will ever be able to play OG well at an NFL level.

Simply moving him there and away from his natural position just to find some place to play him does nothing more than copy the approach we took with CWill so we're supposed to make that same move again??? I'd need to see a lot more out of him than I have so far for me to think he could do it.

I don't think he has the right size, body build or athleticism to play OG in the type of offense I'm envisioning we'll be running. Assuming his injury isn't a permanent problem and he can rebuild his playing strength I think we'd be far better off leaving him at RT to take advantage of his run blocking talents and coach his bad pass blocking techniques out of him. You move him to OG now and it's a set up for another failed first round OT pick.

I think he's going to get $5 Million or so. I'd do that in a heart beat.

We could flash back to 2004 and sign him as our Tait RT-to-LT and Moore as our Ruben Brown. :lol-027:

Valid points, Soul. I agree with you and have hope still for Carimi to be a long term starting RT. Not ready to give up on him at all yet. But....we do have to hedge our bets a little. He could flop again next year. He could (I hope not) turn out to be another JA injury OL bust.

We have 3 OTs with NFL experience--Webb, Carimi, and Scott who's a journeyman quality backup at best. He sucks, lets be honest. So unless we draft one (unlikely) its either Scott or another FA. Winston is a proven, quality RT and >>> Scott. If the price is right, he's worth a look. The way I see it, picking up one clear OL upgrade in FA (iow, someone head and shoulders better than Rachal/Spencer/Scott/Garza) makes it a helluva lot easier to justify drafting a LB in round 2.

sign winston and schwartz and stop pouring money only into the old defense guys! I thought JA/LS were gone.

I don't know how we could pull it off but if Emery could do it he would be king! Get another OL in the draft & a longtime weakness becomes a big strength.

That only works if we draft OLmen to supplement older players.

What Jerry Angelo did to this OL was criminal in the way he ignored it in the draft.

I thought the facetious smiley said it all, but to be clear, it's very unlikely positions can be solved with high quality veterans in FA like this. More likely we can get a couple players in FA, one of which will likely be a sixth OL type, and one prospect early in the draft. You add Winston and I'm fine with us waiting for the draft at OG and supplementing with a Antoine Caldwell-type.

I was more venting about Angelo.

I think we will see a starting OLmen signed, OG or OT they both suck equally and the level of the free agent is up to Stein.

I think we will look to draft a 2nd starter.

I think we draft a later round developmental depth player.
