Getting one solid vet OL in FA (maybe more, but one at least) sure makes the draft less of a needs based pressure cooker. Makes it a lot easier to justify going OL-LB in 1 or 2 or maybe even the reverse, though the former seems wiser depending on how it breaks. If we can come away from the total offseason with 2 OL starter-material additions and one depth/developmental guy, Emery will have accomplished all he could reasonably do this year to reverse the Angelo-ing of the OL.

We have 3 OTs with NFL experience--Webb, Carimi, and Scott who's a journeyman quality backup at best. He sucks, lets be honest. So unless we draft one (unlikely) its either Scott or another FA. Winston is a proven, quality RT and >>> Scott. If the price is right, he's worth a look. The way I see it, picking up one clear OL upgrade in FA (iow, someone head and shoulders better than Rachal/Spencer/Scott/Garza) makes it a helluva lot easier to justify drafting a LB in round 2.
If we sign a vet OLineman I'm a bigger fan of Moore right now than I am of Winston but that's me. Saying Scott sucks isn't absolutely true but calling him a journeyman backup at best is fair. That's what he is and that's what he plays like. If he was all that good he wouldn't have still been looking for a team last August. He's a role player and that's it.

What makes this difficult is not knowing what moves they're gonna make toward freeing up some cap space but it's pretty obvious some will be made. There isn't even enough left to sign our own guys let alone anyone else yet day after day it's written about and talked about. My guess is that they've worked out some restructuring but just haven't announced it yet. Otherwise why even talk about your own guys who you want back when clearly you don't seem to have the cap space to even sign them.

So it's gonna be harder than hell to predict anything until Tuesday at 3PM when the bell rings unless on Monday or earlier on Tuesday we see some announcements about changes in the Bears cap situation. If we have the money to pursue a guy like Winston I'm all for it. We need another vet OT so why not him right? We also need another vet OG so why not Moore? From what I can see those would be two beneficial signings IF there's cap space to do it.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Acoording to PFF, which Emery acknowledged using, he was definitely not good. He looked good by comparison after Carimi melted down. He sucked LESS than Carimi did, yes. That's the approximate equivalent of being the least-overweight fat ass in line at the midnight buffet desert table.

We picked Scott up in the waiver heap just before the season got going. There's a reason an OT was still available in late August. If we have to go with him again as our 3rd guy, then we have to. I understand that. All I'm saying is that Winston is definitely worth a look if the price is right and he'd be a substantial upgrade over Scott (and hedge with Carimi's uncertainties). It's been reported that we have "expressed interest" to his agent so we shall see.

Then if Cooper is still available @ 20 the OL is looking pretty good all of a sudden.

If by some miracle Emery pulled off Winston + Moore in FA and drafted Cooper or Warmack in round 1, that would be a new hit reality show called "OL Makeover". The new o-line would be trotted out at the end to an unsuspecting Jerry Angelo who would be left to say "I can't believe it!" in amazement.

    1% chance though...
