The OL was 24th last year, which I believe was a move up from the previous year, sad. But it's going to help them a lot if Cutler buys into Trestmans system and starts getting rid of the ball quicker. Football outsiders didn't have a EoY, so I won't bother posting it, but as of mid Dec sacks on Cutler were MUCH higher when he held onto the ball longer then 3 sec's, I think he ranked 14th in qb's sacked w/under 3 sec's, and ranked mid 20's in qb's that held the ball longer then that. They had also broken down a GB game where the more he held onto the ball, the worse his game was.
It's not saying the OL was excused, it wasn't, it was bad and needs at least 3 new pieces(got one already), but I do believe that between Bushrod, a few draft picks and Carimi/Brown solidifing one of the G spots and backup T spot AND Cutler improving b/c he buys into Trestmans system I think the OL can easily get into the 10-15 range, which is a huge jump from 24th. If that happens I also think you'll see Cutty easily in the top 10 qb area also, up from the 12-15 area he's currently at, and he'll get resigned.
Bushrod/Webb, Draft, Draft, Carimi/Brown, Webb/Carimi is a hell of a step up from what was there last year. B/c even in the 2nd-4th round(if they move back as is being suggested by Emery) there are day 1 starting quality G's and C's. Cutler spending more time getting the ball w/in 3 sec's is also going to help a now very young interior keep pressure off him and make them look better. w/Bennett he is only lacking a speed WR to pop the top of the D, but he is loaded w/go up and get it WR's that he loves, no reason he won't have a big season at this point.

Garza is killing us. It would be almost criminal to not replace him this year. He was the weakest link on a weak oline interior IMHO. The pocket was routinely crushed so Cutler couldn't step up and pass. The run game between the tackles (especially in short yardage situations) was non-existent.
Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

We CANNOT sign even our own FAs without re-working at least one contract or making more cuts that arent expected. I don't care what lip service Emery pays to purist fiscal rectitude, a Tillman extension (for instance) is ineveitable. It would be totally stupid not to. Right now, our cap space only covers the anticipated draft pool + a $2m emergency fund. There's no other choice unless you want to not pursue any other FAs, let ALL ours walk, and fill every last remaining roster spot with $400k udfa rookies.

Absolutely. I'll be really surprised and pissed if Emery doesnt draft a REAL CENTER (not a "developmental" guy) this year. Especially if he pulls off the trade-down scenario he was hinting at yesterday. Depending on how it shakes out, Garza should be eventually released or asked to take a pay cut since at best he will (should) be a backup G/C this year.

Jason Campbell - QB - Bears
Per the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns have expressed interest in free agent QB Jason Campbell.
The Browns need competition for Brandon Weeden, but Campbell wouldn't be hard to beat out. Cleveland is also looking to move on from popgun-armed Colt McCoy. The Jets and Bears have also shown interest in 31-year-old Campbell.

Brian Urlacher - LB - Bears
ESPN 1500 Twin Cities reports it's a "long shot" the Vikings would have more than just "cursory interest" in free agent MLB Brian Urlacher.
We agree. It doesn't fit GM Rick Spielman's profile to go out and blow big bucks on an aging veteran, especially one that has slowed down as abruptly as Urlacher has. Free agent MLB Jasper Brinkley isn't likely to return, and the Vikings are aiming for a young linebacker who can cover backs and tight ends.

PLease do us that favor Cleveland, and I think we all knew that the Vikes didn't want BU for real.

Agreed. There is ZERO goal-line punch. I'm sick of the OC's getting knocked on their keister's. Time we improved the interior. A perfect scenario would be Jones or Frederick and Moore or Cooper. Throw in a FB and I'm happy as a clam.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Agreed totally. We have got to get a REAL Center and I think that guy can be Barrett Jones. I wouldn't take him at 20. I don't know where I'd take him until after his pro-day. But I think he can be the Center we really need.
Also cut Garza!
