Bears decline to tender RFA DT Nate Collins

CHICAGO – The Chicago Bears have informed restricted free agent defensive tackle Nate Collins they will not tender him before the March 12 3 p.m. CT deadline, Collins told ESPNChicago.com on Saturday.

Collins, the Bears’ lone restricted free agent, participated in nine games last season as a reserve defensive lineman and recorded 13 tackles and one tackle for a loss.

A veteran of three NFL seasons, Collins signed a one-year contract with the Bears this past May. He made a positive impression on the coaching staff in the preseason and eventually earned a spot on the Bears’ 53-man roster after he served a one-game suspension in Week 1 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Once he officially rejoined the team in Week 2, Collins remained inactive until Oct. 28, when he made five tackles in his Bears debut – versus the Carolina Panthers at Soldier Field.

Collins dressed for the next eight games but was inactive for the Bears' regular-season finale in Detroit.

Money might have been the issue for Collins after the Bears allocated $8.45 million in salary-cap space to the defensive tackle position when they applied the franchise tag to Pro Bowler Henry Melton. The 2013 low tender amount for restricted free agents is $1.323 million, although that deal is not guaranteed. The Bears could still have interest in re-signing Collins, but likely at a reduced price.

Collins previously played for new Bears defensive coordinator Mel Tucker when the two were members of the Jacksonville Jaguars organization in 2010 and 2011.
Gotta admit I'm a little surprised. I think Collins was impressive and has shown more potential in one season than Toeaina over the last two seasons to justify a roster spot.

Did you guys know that Mel Tucker cut him once before in Jacksonville? I really hope Tucker knows what he's doing.

Melton & Paea as starting DTs and Collins as #3 DT would be great imo.

I know they can talk to agents but nothing can be done until Tuesday as I recall. Maybe they put something on the table for him to think about but I doubt it's 10+ mil. which is what he thinks he's worth.

    Day 2 Update

-It appears we are targeting OL and TE in free agency in some fashion.

-It looks like we are going to he on the outside looking in at Levitre/Vasquez as reports of the bidding war between Buffalo/Tennessee and Indianapolis are swirling and now SD has jumped in.

-Brandon Moore and Ramon Foster have been mentioned as cheaper options that the Bears could add.

-Jake Long intrigues me and I would like confirmation from an actual source.

-It looks like Izzy will test the market.

    -No word on Brian.

-Nothing about Bushrod or Cook yet who we have been heavily linked to.

    My questions for the day

    1. How serious are we about Levitre? It seems other teams are gearing up for a big run at him.

    2. Why no TE Rumors yet? There has been a ton of discussion.

    3. Are we serious about OT? It seems we are being linked to every OG available.

    4. Who is our number 1 free agent to re-sign? I would have said it was Urlacher, but maybe it is Roach.

In all reality, levitre is a pipe dream. I never thought they'd go that high for any FA this year considering all of their needs. I fully expect them to obtain some mid level Ol like a schwartz and whatever TE falls into that category and spread their money round because they just have too many needs. IMO, those 2 signings s/b 1 and 1A on their priority list. After that, its whoever of their own FA's they can get at he right price. I also think all of our FA's will test the market, no one should take precedent over the offensive needs.

    From another site

Clayton just said on espn that Bushrod looks to be out in NO, reason being Chicago could be bidding pretty strong.

I think that most people know my stance on Bushrod but this was my response to someone this morning,

Don't sigh on Bushrod he is a quality OT.

He plays LT in one if the most difficult offensive systems in the NFL and had a down year last season and was still ranked higher than anyone we have and I am a Webb supporter.

Everyone can rally behind the PFF stats but you cannot compare 2 guys playing in completely different systems who are being asked to do 2 different things against different levels of competition.

How do you think Webb would have faired with 50 passing attempts a game and little help?

Even better question is how would Carimi have faired in that situation?

He is well respected around the NFL, that tells me more than stats.

If we are going to sign one "big money" FA, I'll be pretty disappointed if its Bushrod. He's only a minor upgrade over Webb and 4 years older, for millions extra. If you're gonna spend big bucks, sign someone who's head-and-shoulders better filling a major hole, like Levitre.

I understand your reasoning/plan and your points are fair to consider. Of course, I'm sure you'll admit that he's not as good a run blocker as Webb is. But.....if we do sign him, I certainly hope you're proven right and it works out well.

I'm just leery of spending big money on the guy but I assume Kromer knows his shit.

Bushrod actually graded out as a very strong run blocker.

Bushrod is not head and shoulders better than Webb, but he does not have to be to upgrade our line. He has to be head and shoulders better than Carimi/Scott, which he is.

Bushrod is not the type of free agent signing that sends you partying in the streets, like Peppers, he is the type that just makes your team better.

    1. He gives you a solid upgrade at LT.

    2. He gives you an upgrade at RT as Webb moves over to RT taking some pressure off of Webb.

    3. He allows Carimi to stay and work at OG, I just don't think his knee lets him move back outside.

    4. He moves John Scott, when re-signed, to the more appropriate swing OT.

    5. He allows you to focus on OG in a draft that is stacked at the OG position.

These things are all subtle and they are not as flashy as some other potential OL moves but they are all subtle upgrades to a line that needs improvement at every spot.
