I don't really get all the anti-Bushrod commentary either. Sure, he's not elite....but we didn't pay him the money an elite LT would command. ...and the few posters who said things like "Bushrod gave up only 6 sacks on 700+ pass attempts" or "Bushrod only allowed about 3 sacks over the span of the last 12 or 13 games" are dead on the money. This was an excellent signing, for a few reasons.
- Bushrod is an immediate upgrade at a position that has been a detriment to this team for a while now (our QB misses games pretty much every year due to the beating he's subjected to).
- Emery didn't break the bank in signing Jermon.
- Signing Bushrod allows us some draft day flexibility (We're now in a position where we can take a MLB early if we so choose, because we are no longer hamstringed by awful o-lineman who must be replaced immediately).
- In singing Bushrod, Emery very well may have improved us @ RT as well (assuming Webb is more competent @ RT than LT, which is almost a certainty).
Jermon Bushrod was a win/win situation for the Bears and we should all be happy about it. I'm more than satisfied with it myself....and once the M. Bennett signing is factored in, it's DEFINITELY a good day to be a Bears fan. Just think of it like this: The money a guy like Long would have commanded would have almost certainly kept us from signing Bennett, who may actually be a bigger deal than Bushrod for this offense once all is said & done. If Bennett never improves upon his 2012 performance, or duplicates it for that matter, he's still light years ahead of any TE who was under contract with us prior to yesterday....and one could make a strong argument that he's better than the He-Man clone Angelo traded away to Carolina, which left us with the least talented corp of TEs the NFL had to offer in the first place
I'll take the duo of Bushrod/Bennett over J. Webb/K. Davis every day....and twice on every gameday Sunday. Anyone willing to disagree with that statement can't be held seriously in a football related conversation. It's that simple...
