JJ I think what you're saying makes a lot of sense but I'm still thinking before it's all said and done that he's gonna need to make a couple or move to free cap space if he wants to bring back core players like Urlacher and Izzy. Aging as they may be they're still effective players and would help with the transition.
To me the two guys who I believe we could gain the most from a extensions are Jennings and Peanut. There's $13 mil of cap space tied up between those two and I would think that could pretty easily be halved and with that Emery has the cap space he needs for Izzy and Urlacher. I guess Marshall represents a possibility as well. I know these guy are all around 30 give or take a year or two but they're all still highly productive players and extending then for another two years would sure help the hear and now.
I'm not overly anxious about it since I figure if it needs to be done there's a plan in place to do it. Emery isn't the type to go around unprepared for almost any eventuality and it's no longer a problem to clear space you may not use. It rolls over anyway. If he can get Melton's deal done that would help too.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

if u look at it this way, we are not in a really bad situation, cap wise. we can restructrue pep, peanut and tim. agree long term with melton. but i think thay emery, and thats good, sees all of that as 'lest resort' and one by one. i like that long-term thinking. didnt want ot overspend on roach and 54, of course izzy too. and im pretty sure izzy will come back. and when he sees an opportunity for a good player, he will make cap space im sure! hes imperative is a good draft now

Here is my attempt at a remainder of the offseason that features Tavon Austin and fills other needs that I did for another site.
Signings
There are going to have to be more signings as the Bears still need a number of starters at different positions. The Bushrod/Bennett signings gave them flexibility, but not enough to by pass OG and LB for a WR.
OG Brandon Moore
LB Brian Urlacher
QB Jason Campbell
Draft
1[20] WR Tavon Austin [West Virginia] 5'8" 185lbs.
A speed and big play merchant that can add a dynamic element to the offense and be used by Trestman to attack defenses from a number of angles.

*Trade* The Bears trade 2[50] to the San Francisco 49ers for 2[63] and 3[94] and a 6th round pick. The 49ers have more picks than they can possibly keep on their team and the Bears need to fill some need positions with the picks after the 1st round.
2[63] C Brian Schwenke [Cal] 6'3" 314lbs.
A start now center that may not have incredible star power, but who can upgrade the interior and is an elite pass protector for the position.

3[94] LB Sean Porter [Texas A&M] 6'2" 240lbs.
A LB that can run and tackle, his stats from Texas A&M are impressive and he can step in at SLB immediately and play the 50% snaps that the SLB is required to.

4. CB Will Davis [Utah St] 6' 190lbs.
The Bears need a NB for this season that can eventually be developed to take over a starting role down the line.

5. LB Kiko Alonso [Oregon] 6'3" 242lbs.
A big athletic MLB that has had some off field issues, but he has the physical ability to develop at MLB behind Urlacher for a season.

6. DT Josh Boyd [Mississippi St] 6'3" 310lbs.
A big powerful DT that has the build to play NT in the Cover 2 system.

6. OG Travis Bond [UNC] 6'6" 340lbs.
A big body that can be developed at RG behind Moore who has only a couple of seasons left.

Windy I've intentionally avoided debating these mocks this year but this one I have to object to. If we draft any player other than a LB, OL or a major size NT in rounds one or two I'm gonna become a Broncos fan for good. Cutler likes bigger taller receivers and we've spent between $40 to $50 mil and a second round pick getting him those types of pass catchers so let's not be drafting midgets again OK? Because of his size, actually the lack of it, he has boom vs bust written all over him.
I'd also bring back Izzy before either Campbell or Moore.

getting a deal with Melton done would help us.
I have a feeling that they are not interested to restructure any deals this year. Melton will not get a long term contract for this season, that's why he signed his Tag without any holdout talks or being negativ about it.
The way Stein can work out deals for our favor, we can get Cutler, Tillman, Marshall, Jennings, Melton and even Peppers with a lower Cap Hit than they are worth for sure. Keep Cap Space that way, be a big spender in Free Agency for fill the few holes that will be left and make some kind of All in that year (2014-15 season).

I don't want this to happen either.
On another site we were debating whether the Bears could afford to draft Austin.
I said NO.
I did this to see if it could work in a hypothetical situation.

In a hypothetical situation other then 49ers have allot of picks who would they be targeting with our pick? Or we just assuming cause they have lots of picks they want to trade up?
I'm thinking they trade picks for picks next year not just move up just to move up. That's what the patriots were doing when they amassed picks a few years ago

49ers could use another DL player and getting their guy at #20 would help them more. If S Vaccaro on the Board at #20, I think they would want him.

CB D.J Moore [Carolina]
LB Brian Urlacher
QB Jason Campbell [Cleveland]
Restructure/Extension
Free Agents
OT Jermon Bushrod [New Orleans] 5 years 35.9 million/17.5 guaranteed
A solid upgrade at LT that allows the Bears to shift Webb to RT and gives them a consistent performer at LT. He also allows the Bears to permanently move Carimi to OG and gives them depth at OT for the first time in a long time. Bushrod is not Ryan Clady, but he fixes a massive problem for the Bears.

TE Martellus Bennett [NY Giants] 4 years 20 million/9 guaranteed
The Bears get a 6'6" 265lbs. athlete that has every tool an elite TE needs to be dominant and he was very good when finally getting out of Dallas and being allowed to be a #1 TE. Bennett is also a strong blocker and gives the Bears a complete TE for the first time in a long time.

DE Turk McBride [New Orleans] 1 year 700k
The Bears sign a veteran back up DE that should come cheaper than Izzy and fill the role of depth that does not play. McClellin will be the primary back up and pass rush specialist so I can only see McBride playing a couple of reps a game and maybe on klick teams.

TE Steve Maneri [Kansas City] 2 years
A big [6'6" 280lbs], physical blocker who is a converted OT and will give the Bears a short yardage TE, 24 year old developing back up and a huge special teams presence.

LB D.J Williams [Denver] 1 year 900K [1.75 potential earning]
Williams has had some suspension issues with the league, but when on the field he has been solid and brings a physical style to the Bears. He has played a number of different LB positions and he cans till run, which is important in the zone defense the Bears look to feature.

S Tom Zbikowski [Indianapolis] 1 year 700K
The Bears add an elite special teamer and hard nosed player with starting and back up experience that can provide depth and an upgrade over Steltz. A fighters attitude could be infectious on special teams.

LB James Anderson [Carolina] 1 year
A fast outside LB that can play the SLB position and cover he seemed to be lost in the shuffle at LB with Thomas Davis, Jon Beason and now Luke Keuchly. He is a starting LB in the NFL and has multiple 100 tackles seasons to prove it.
